U.S. Air Force Withdraws All Bombers from RAF Fairford Amid Escalating Security Concerns
The abrupt removal of U.S. bombers from RAF Fairford is a clear vote of no confidence in Britain’s ability to secure a critical American military installation .
Last week, my Legal Insurrection colleague Mary Chastain reported that the British police released five men arrested on suspicion of terrorism on bail.
The men, all in their 20s and British nationals from London, were arrested for allegedly plotting an attack on the British Royal Air Force (RAF) base at Fairford, which is used by the U.S. This release occurred despite the fact that even the British Prime Minister indicated there was reason to suspect a connection to Iran behind the plot targeting the base.
Many in the U.S. were stunned by this development. RAF Fairford is a non-trivial target, as the U.S. Air Force operates it as its principal European forward operating location for deployed long-range bombers and U.S. support units, including the 420th Air Base Squadron and 501st Combat Support Wing headquarters.
This week, the U.K. is facing a stunning development initiated by the U.S., as the U.S. Air Force (USAF) has withdrawn all bombers deployed to RAF Fairford in England.
All U.S. bombers deployed to RAF Fairford have been returned to their home stations in the United States, the spokesperson said. The Wall Street Journal was first to report on the bombers’ return.
“U.S. Air Force bombers routinely operate around the world to support global force readiness and operational requirements,” the Pentagon spokesperson’s statement said. “The Airmen that operate America’s bomber force, including B-1s, B-2s, and B-52s, remain ready to deliver precision global strike capabilities – including through operations that launch and recover from the continental United States – anywhere, anytime.”

A group of bombers was spotted flying back to the U.S. on Sunday.
Aviation watchers, such as the Military Air Tracking Alliance, have observed dozens of B-52 and B-1 bombers operating out of RAF Fairford since the opening days of the Iran war. Observers noticed a host of B-1 bombers flying out of the base Sunday.
The rapid withdrawal may have been based on new information related to threats targeting the base.
The withdrawal was highly unusual: Such moves are rarely made so quickly from an allied air base in a peacetime country thousands of miles from a combat zone.
The need to move the bombers out of the base, R.A.F. Fairford, was deemed so urgent that some of the planes and their flight crews left while aerial refueling aircraft were still being scrambled to support their flights to the United States. At least three of the planes had landed at their home base in South Dakota by Sunday, the officials said, speaking on the condition of anonymity to discuss operational matters.
….The British Ministry of Defense declined to comment on the movements of U.S. military assets.
American officials on Sunday declined to specify the nature of the new information that prompted the rapid withdrawal of the Air Force bombers, some of which had just arrived in the past week as part of a normal rotation of forces. One U.S. official said the new information was part of the same threat warnings that surfaced three weeks ago, but specific details and a sense of urgency spiked in the past 24 hours, alarming commanders.
The new Greenland deal may prove to be fortuitous in light of these events. It includes provisions for building 2 new military bases, including one with an airfield already in place.
The new pact says the US “shall be allowed to establish an additional Defence Area at Narsarsuaq and Mestersvig” – referring to locations in Greenland’s south and east.
Narsarsuaq is a former civilian airport and World War Two base. It has deep-water access and a large runway which US military engineers were recently surveying, the US North Command confirmed to the BBC.
The Mestersvig outpost is remote, far less developed, and used by a Danish naval dog sled unit.
US to open two new Bases in Greenland under new Greenland agreement; Narsarsuaq and Mestersvig
Until now, the U.S. presence there has largely relied on Pituffik base, which is important for missile warning and space surveillance.

The abrupt removal of U.S. bombers from RAF Fairford is a clear vote of no confidence in Britain’s ability to secure a critical American military installation and respond credibly to an alleged Iran-linked threat.
For decades, the “Special Relationship” between our two nations rested on the assumption that Britain was America’s most reliable European partner; Fairford’s sudden evacuation suggests Britain’s current political priorities have turned that relationship into a memory.
As Washington develops alternatives in Greenland and elsewhere, London risks discovering that an alliance once defined by privileged access is readily eroded by security failures, political hesitation, and eroding trust.

The B-1s are likely being redeployed to their home bases:
Grand Forks AFB, North Dakota – in range of Canada
Dyess AFB, Texas – in range of Mexico and Central America
Anderson AFB, Guam – in range of China, North Korea and Russia
Just something to think about…
The ones returning to Grand Forks will do patrols over The Strait of Our Moose.
Between the two parts of Michiganistan.
3rd world invasion of Europe paying dividends again.
We can just call it Less Britain from now on.
or Minor Britain.
Soon to be, Former Britain.
Rue Brittania

When the red-green alliance eventually breaks apart, we’ll see another hot war in Europe. In the meantime, Mooslims will continue to destroy western heritage for the communists.
Maybe (probably?) and if/when it comes it should be left to the Europeans to sort out for themselves b/c they created the mess they’re in and they should bear the responsibility for cleaning it up. Oceans matter and we can always use ICBM if needed to tamp down a neo caliphate established in Europe.
In the words of a wise man:
“It is our true policy to steer clear of permanent alliance with any portion of the foreign world. “
Exactly so. No permanent allies just permanent interests.
No we won’t. Civilians dont have guns except maybe in Switzerland. Not sure about Finland, Reds will roll over and show their bellies to the Greens. Euro reds are women and simps mostly same as in this country.
The IRA would like a word….There are privately owned firearms in many European Nations. Not that they hold as many as in the USA but they do exist. Many kept at ‘gun clubs’ but more than few in private hands. Plus you don’t need firearms to start raising all manner of havoc/chaos with asymmetric attacks on infrastructure. Most infrastructure is very vulnerable to sabotage with a little know how. Then there’s Cyber on top of physical domain attacks. If you really wanna worry about something you can’t control and that the folks responsible don’t take seriously enough worry about a dozen dozen (just 144) independent attacks on physical infrastructure in a single region of the USA targeting power substations, water treatment plants, electricity generation, key bridges, rail lines, gas pipelines, oil storage/transfer sites and a couple of major refineries for good measure. Not with dirty nukes but widely available items put into the right combo and a few folks ‘committed to the cause’. Hit second and third tier municipalities not the big cities to create widespread public panic, sow chaos, generate overreaction from govt to win converts as repressive tactics are used.
In the vernacular of the times: what the actual flick?
The strategic bombers at Fairford have been used in the past months for missions involving Iran. Even if it was only surveillance the Brit’s should not have released them. As to where the bombers could be based on the future that would be Guam, Okinawa and Diego Garcia.
Hopefully this begins the process of disengaging from the UK. They are an unreliable partner that actively participated in trying to prevent the election of President Trump in 2016 and then colluded to create the Russian hoax.
“They are an unreliable partner that actively participated in trying to prevent the election of President Trump in 2016 and then colluded to create the Russian hoax.”
Conclusion: Moe Howard was right.
We need to recall the nuclear warheads the UK has under lease.
I don’t see what all the concern was about – muslim suspects of the anticipated attack were all arrested. Wait, what? They were all released on bail the following morning?
Oh my God.
They go free, and the UK arrests grandma for a mean tweet……
Keep in mind that some guy who slashed a runner dingey off the French coast was denied bale until his hearing but these guys get to walk free pretty much same day they were arrested.
Definitely watch what people actually do v what they say will do. Revealed preference is undefeated while promises are broken every day.
I want the US to end NATO and go to arranging military bases in specific countries in Europe as needed. I want all US money to foreign countries or groups to end except $1 per year to UN.
“The withdrawal was highly unusual: Such moves are rarely made so quickly from an allied air base …”
Allies? Not So Great Britain ain’t our friend.
Withdrawal when security is at risk is best done quickly, not at all “highly unusual” in this case given the circumstances. The withdrawal from Afghanistan was also done “quickly” but for all the wrong reasons, so no comparison there.
Hope they cleared the withdrawal with the Muslim Home Secretary.
whatever the ” threat ” was, it worked–that it has been kept quiet is rather ominous and tends to suggest that its detection / verification came from national forces other than our own
it DOES make one ponder the question: if the brits can’t protect one of their own bases (with our assistance on site, of course) how the living hell are they going to secure nukes ?
You have to ask the same question of France as well.
What good is Airstrip one if we can’t keep bombers there?
Kinda awkward for our EuroFriends just as VladTheBad is escalating incursions beyond the contested zone, what with Empress VanDerToothlessLyon not having much of a military — the projecting force part, not the making speeches about engineering society part. Who they gonna get to fight for them?
Hey, how we gonna push back without your army, Sam? OK, maybe we can get some Canadians to fight for us; that’s what provincials are for, after all.
The British are keeping the perps’ names a secret.
For some reason, I do not think any of them is a smith.
Islam has invaded Europe and intends to stay.
I just saw a picture of commuter bus stopped because the muslim was praying in the bus lane.
I suspect muslims do not pray in the bus lanes in Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Bangladesh, Egypt, etc.
“I suspect…”
They don’t. In Saudi Arabia at least, on the call to prayer, they set up on sidewalks, courtyards, designated prayer rooms, etc. Never in the streets. The disruptive tactics are only employed in kaffir (non-Muslim) areas.
We are running out of places in Europe to host bombers. Not France. Not Spain. Not UK. Not Turkey. Now not UK. Everything else except Poland is a ? and Poland is a little too close to Russia for my liking. Not sure about Germany. If we cant forward deploy to Europe than Europe is the most useless its ever been. It strongly raises the question is there anything we get out of NATO and if not why are we still in it.
Why do you think Trump was making such a big deal about Greenland? Or Diego Garcia?
I approve of both. Greenland has always had strategic value. Diego Garcia has been very valuable. Take it aswy from UK and dare them to do something about it.
After all we have sacrificed for the Not so great Britain. Two world wars and the Falkland Islands. They have pissed their freedom away to the Muslims. They have become unstable allies at best.
Unstable, yes. Allies? Not so sure anymore.
They admitted there was cause to suspect terrorism. They release all of them anyway the very next day.
Meanwhile they refused bail for the guy that cut a rubber boat.
They are not reliable or useful at this point. The EU military is a joke, and they can’t even secure their own bases in their own home countries.
NATO is a joke, but not a funny one.
We need to remove all US personnel, weapons, and equipment from Britain.
The only US government employees left there should be diplomats who are advised that they might be considered expendable. Trade agreements should be reviewed for possible revision and/or cancellation. And Britain should be added to the list of nations that America nationals should not visit for their own safety.
