Iran Plotting Attacks on U.S. Diplomats and Troops in the Middle East, Regime Officials Confirm

Iran is plotting attacks on U.S. diplomats and service members stationed in the Middle East, Iranian officials told The New York Times. “Two Iranian officials, one of them a member of the Revolutionary Guards, said in interviews on Saturday that the expansion of targets also includes U.S. diplomats and personnel,” the newspaper reported.

The Iranian regime, which has a history of targeting diplomats and diplomatic missions, would not limit its attack to military targets. Tehran regards U.S. officials and soldiers in the region as “fair game,” the NYT added.

The newspaper also hinted at possible attacks on U.S. soil by regime-backed terror cells, noting they are “not just simply Iranian nationals.” Last week, Britain’s domestic intelligence agency MI5 warned of increased activity by Iranian terror cells in the country.

The revelation comes shortly after Axios reported on a U.S. intelligence memo warning that Iran had “substantially increased” its efforts to kill American diplomats and officials in the Middle East and beyond, with some plots reaching “advanced stages.”

The New York Times continued:

Inside the Trump administration, officials are expressing fears that Iran is in the “advanced stages” of planning attacks against U.S. officials. (…)

U.S. officials say they are focused on elements of the most recent intelligence suggesting that the Iranians may seek to kill U.S. ambassadors in the Middle East and American officials on U.S. soil — a longtime ambition of Iran’s elite Unit 840, which has carried out kidnappings and assassinations around the globe. (…)

U.S. officials and European allies said the intelligence about potential attacks had been rising in recent weeks, ever since a suspected Iranian plot against a military base in Britain used by the U.S. military. (…)

There is some evidence the Iranians have operatives inside the United States who are “not just simply Iranian nationals,” one official said. (…)

Two Iranian officials, one of them a member of the Revolutionary Guards, said in interviews on Saturday that the expansion of targets also includes U.S. diplomats and personnel. The officials, who asked not to be named because they were not authorized to speak publicly, confirmed reports released by the State Department about Iran’s plot to target Americans.

The officials defended the plan and noted that Israel and the United States had killed dozens of Iranian officials and some family members. In their view, they said, that made targeting Americans “fair game.” (…) Unit 840 is tasked with plotting and executing abductions, assassinations and attacks on foreigners around the world, including Israeli and U.S. civilians, and Iranian dissidents, according to Israeli and Iranian officials.”

“The US State Department has ordered some diplomats and family members to depart from its missions in Saudi Arabia and plans to withdraw family members from a number of other US missions in the region,” Reuters reported Wednesday.

By Friday, CNN reported that the departures were accelerating. “The United States is rushing to move some diplomats and their family members from posts in the Middle East as the threat of regional escalation looms, according to multiple sources familiar with the matter.”
