British Taxpayers Foot the Bill for Migrants’ Hijabs

British Taxpayers Foot the Bill for Migrants’ Hijabs

Britain supplied 974 taxpayer-funded hijabs to small-boat migrants in six months. Conservatives want the handouts stopped; officials cite a legal duty.

The Home Office has an answer for British taxpayers wondering why they bought 974 hijabs for small-boat migrants: the rules require it. Conservatives would like those handouts stopped.

Government documents obtained by the Mail on Sunday record the distribution between January and June. The newspaper estimates the number could be nearing 1,500 now, based on the same monthly rate. For anything beyond the June count, that remains an estimate. How much taxpayers spent wasn’t reported.

Shadow Home Secretary Chris Philp called for an immediate end to the practice:

“It’s an insult to hard-working British taxpayers that they’re funding religious items for people who have broken into our country. It should not be for us to fund someone else’s religious practices.”

Asked about the hijabs, a Home Office source referred to the Short-term Holding Facility Rules. The source said basic clothing provision has to cover religious and cultural items, too:

“All arrivals receive a basic dry clothing pack where required. The items available form part of standard welfare arrangements.”

Men received 10,694 clothing packs during the period covered by the records; women received 2,670. There were children’s packs as well, with beanie hats and babygrows among the other supplies listed. Philp singled out the hijabs. The department answered with an explanation of the whole clothing program.

His colleague Laura Trott has been pressing the government on hijabs in school uniforms, telling the Mail on Sunday she does not believe “the state should be party to an instrument of female suppression.” Education Secretary Lucy Powell has said requiring young girls to wear the hijab is unacceptable. Trott praised that, but said the government has done nothing about it.

The two debates are not the same. Compelling a child to wear religious dress at school is a different act from handing a garment to an adult who may want it. But the Conservatives are now running both arguments simultaneously, and the government is on the defensive on both.

Philp also wants migrants returned to the safe country they left. In his remarks, he pointed to France and called for Britain to leave the European Convention on Human Rights so illegal arrivals could be deported immediately.

The trouble for ministers is that their own returns scheme has stopped accepting cases.

By October 1, Britain had sent about 1,500 people back to France through the “one in, one out” pilot. Slightly fewer asylum seekers had traveled in the other direction, having applied through a legal route. British ministers wanted to keep it going. France reportedly sought a Europe-wide agreement instead. Flights for people already detained will continue in the coming weeks.

More than 19,000 people have crossed by small boat this year. That’s down 42 percent from the same point in 2025, and the Home Office says it recorded the fewest summer arrivals since 2020. The fall gives ministers something to point to, though it leaves thousands arriving outside the legal route.

For those new arrivals, the French pilot is no longer an option. The clothing arrangements remain in place. Philp might have more patience with the second if the government had managed to keep the first.

Idiotic. Then again its the UK so guess what? I don’t care.

“The Home Office has an answer for British taxpayers… the rules require it.”

Another great example of why you never let the nose of the welfare camel get into your government’s tent.

What rule? Let them cite the rule in whatever way Britain keeps their rules in a book or some sort of a list or something.

It’s a loose-leaf notebook. Makes it easy to change with the prevailing political winds.

In any event, England is a subjugated and conquered country. It can no longer we considered “Western” by commonly-accepted definition.

The post cites the “Short Term Holding Facility Rules” that were instituted in 2018.

      (see: https://www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/2018/409/contents )

Rule 21 states: A detained person’s cultural and religious needs must be catered for so far as is practicable.

So they turned a negative right into a positive right. “Catered for.”
“Let him” go to a mosque became “give him” religious clothing.

I understand what you are saying, but remember that the people cannot just go to a mosque as they are being held by the British government, hence the name of the rules of “Short Term Holding Facility Rules.”

The question would then be “would the government supply Bibles, rosary beads or Yarmulkes for people of a different faiths who are being detained / held?”

Is there preferential treatment for a particular religion or is the same accommodation being made for all faiths?

We can argue / discuss whether such an accommodation is needed and that is a good discussion to have.

Whether that accommodation is only for members of one faith is a totally different discussion and if so, that needs to end.

          And end yesterday.

“Let them cite the rule in whatever way Britain keeps their rules in a book or some sort of a list or something.”

“I know my rights! Dunnage! Cowhage-in-ordinary! Badinage and prognostickage! Snezzing and knezzing! Cheese-paring-in-the-hedge! If this goes on I shall claim the right of access to the back passages!”

Weave them from swine-hair, and I’m all in favor of taxpayer funded handouts.

Goodbye Great Britain, was nice to know you

We should be thankful for the 250 yrs. of freedom our fore fathers gave us. Lately we are asleep at the wheel. We will end up like Great Britain, if we don’t get our act together very soon.

Do you have to get it in black? Can you opt for a burgundy shade like the new iPhone?

Evil Otto in reply to Concise. | October 5, 2026 at 6:50 am

Like the iPhone you get the color you get (black, in this case), but you can buy a new hijab cover to put over it in a wide variety of colors and styles. Of course then you have to wear a hijab cover cover (black only) because Islam.

All together now: Britain is screwed.

The ordinary Brits might still be able to save their Nation but the window is rapidly closing. IMO, once that window is shut they’d be better off emigrating to Australia, Canada, NZ, USA than engage in a ‘civil strife/war’ that’s come too late to have a realistic shot at success. Maybe they’ve got 15 years, probably more like a decade at the outside. The demographics of voting age population is the issue. Presumably the older ‘Boomer’ Brits are dying off at similar rates to USA where we lose about 10K per day and as this accelerates within that age cohort less and less folks will fit the profile of ‘born/raised in England/Wales/Scotland/N Ireland’ which one would associate with less willingness to see their Nation transformed into something unrecognizable. So from a ballot box perspective they gotta get it done sooner or they won’t have the voting age population to do so.

The kafirs should pay for it, since the elected the labour party which welcomed the invasion of inbred primitives.

The UK has already screwed itself, this is just another screw in the plank of Brits’ brains. Although, I can see the possibility of the US doing something just as stupid: hijabs in schools for the girls who want to try them out: kindergarten, elementary, and even middle schools. Ilhan Omar will be the poster girl for hijabs: She wears a different one every day, so can you! Collect them all!

Another screw in Britain. The RNLI [their equivalent of our Coast Guard] is apparently running a ferry service for “Migrants” from Normandy to Gosport. And the British subjects in Gosport are to either leave town or lock down.
