U. Illinois Medical School Changes DEI Office to ‘Advocacy and Engagement’
“advance equity and broad engagement”
So many schools have tried doing this. Do they really think no one sees it for what it is?
Campus Reform reports:
University of Illinois medical school rebrands DEI office as ‘Advocacy and Engagement’
The University of Illinois (UI) College of Medicine in Chicago renamed its Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion office the Office of Advocacy and Engagement in 2026 while retaining the same director and four listed staff members.
The office’s current website continues to link to several initiatives and resources that appeared under its previous structure.
Do No Harm reported that, as recently as May 24, the office’s homepage stated that the College of Medicine aimed to “develop and implement a diversity, equity and inclusion framework” coordinating efforts across the college.
The outlet also compared archived versions of the office’s website and found that language pledging to recruit and graduate “a diverse body of students and trainees” was later changed to refer to students “from economically and educationally disadvantaged communities.”
The current website states that a key mission of the College of Medicine is to “advance equity and broad engagement” while working to eliminate health care disparities.
The office continues to be led by Gloria Elam, whose title changed from associate dean of diversity and inclusion to associate dean for advocacy and engagement.
The UI College of Medicine’s Chicago campus maintains a Land Acknowledgement stating that the university “sits on the land of multiple Native nations” and that the land was “the traditional birthright of indigenous peoples who were forcibly removed.”
The changes come amid increased federal scrutiny of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) policies in medical education.
President Donald Trump signed an executive order on April 23, 2025, directing federal agencies to investigate potential unlawful discrimination advanced through accreditation standards, including those affecting medical education.

I would love it if someone would do a complete analysis of how this office actually operates. Does the University track each applicant by race? household income? value of parent’s home?
Nearly all medical schools that have LCME accreditation use the AAMC’s AMCAS service, a centralized admissions program for med school applicants where all credentials are submitted and stored. Applicant disclose their race, sex, etc., through that AMCAS site. Financial information is made through other services, like the FAFSA form. Each school applied to may have different individual requirements above this process. It’s cumbersome, but they all know all of your particulars when you apply. And race, sex, and your politics are among the prominent things.
If it looks like a duck…
If no one was fired, nothing will change. Personnel is policy.
No. Kiss AMA’s ass since it is based in Chicago, and is one of the parent organizations of the LCME, the accrediting body of medical schools/colleges in the United States. It’s one reason why so many of us physicians believe there should be more than one accrediting agencies of allopathic (MD) medical programs in the United States to get rid of DEI content.
