Former President Joe Biden got a warm reception from Planned Parenthood of Delaware Thursday night, where the abortion provider honored him after four years of a White House determined to preserve abortion access.
Quite a way to say thank you.
The occasion was Planned Parenthood of Delaware’s fundraising gala at The Waterfall in Claymont. Biden received the 2026 Sonia Schorr Sloan Service Award, named for Sonia “Sonny” Sloan, a longtime abortion activist, close Biden friend, and early political supporter. Former First Lady Jill Biden introduced her husband and presented him with the award.
Biden told the crowd just how much Sloan meant to his political career.
“This is an incredible honor,” Biden said, adding that he would not have become a U.S. senator or president “if it weren’t for Sonny Sloan.”
Then came the record Planned Parenthood was there to celebrate.
Biden turned to the Supreme Court’s 2022 decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, which overturned Roe v. Wade and ended the federal constitutional right to abortion. He said Sloan would have been “devastated” by the ruling and filled with “anger and astonishment.”
Biden proudly reminded the room what he did about it from the White House.
“Following the Dobbs decision, as president, I tried to do what I knew Sonny would have done. We took action. We signed executive orders to protect access to reproductive health care, including emergency medical care.”

That was Biden’s language. Planned Parenthood’s own list of services makes clear what “reproductive health care” includes.
Planned Parenthood of Delaware openly advertises both medication and surgical abortions. The affiliate says it performs surgical abortions through 15 weeks and six days and provides abortion pills through 12 weeks.
And the national numbers accumulated during the Biden years are staggering.
Planned Parenthood’s 2023-2024 numbers included 434,450 abortions. Government grants, contracts, and Medicaid reimbursements totaled $832 million, nearly $40 million more than the previous reporting period.
434,450 abortions. One reporting year.
Thursday night, Biden got champagne, applause, and an award from the organization that performed them.
His Catholic faith makes the celebration even harder to ignore. Biden has publicly identified as a Catholic throughout his political career.
The Catholic Church teaches that human life “must be respected and protected absolutely from the moment of conception” and rejects direct abortion as morally wrong. Biden nevertheless made abortion access a major priority of his administration after Dobbs, signing executive orders and repeatedly promising to restore the protections of Roe.
Nobody at Planned Parenthood’s gala appeared particularly interested in dwelling on that.
Instead, Biden closed by turning abortion back into a political rallying cry.
“You have no idea how powerful women are in this country,” Biden told the crowd. “You are about to find out.”
Planned Parenthood gave Biden an award for his record.
For pro-life Americans, the more than 434,000 abortions Planned Parenthood reported in a single year are a far more fitting monument to it
