Leaders of U. Wisconsin-Madison Frat Arrested After Pledges Found Packed in Basement
“covered in food, condiments, and other liquids”
It’s amazing this still happens, even with all the anti-hazing laws now.
NBC News reports:
Wisconsin frat leaders arrested after 30 pledges found in filthy basement, injured and covered in condiments
Two leaders of an underground University of Wisconsin-Madison fraternity were arrested and charged with hazing after dozens of pledges were found injured, shirtless and covered in condiments in a sweltering basement.
The Madison Police Department said Thursday it received an anonymous tip about an event in the basement of an off-campus chapter house.
Alpha Epsilon Pi was kicked off campus as a recognized chapter in 2015, but the organization maintained a presence at the Madison home.
Police say about 30 pledges, most of whom were 18, were found partially clothed in a filthy basement around 8:20 p.m. on Wednesday.
The apparent hazing victims were “covered in food, condiments, and other liquids” and “had visible injuries consistent with being physically assaulted.” The thermostat was set to 81 degrees, making the basement hot and humid, police said.
Brayden Klein and Samuel Vane, both 20, were charged with hazing and disorderly conduct. Madison police are still investigating the matter.
Klein and Vane each posted $400 bail around 1 a.m. on Thursday morning and were released from the Dane County Jail, officials confirmed. It was not immediately clear when they must appear in court to face the charges.
Klein and Vane could not immediately be reached by NBC News for comment.
The university said in a statement that while it stopped recognizing Alpha Epsilon Pi about a decade ago, the national organization has continued to recognize the Madison chapter, allowing it to exist in the community.
The University of Wisconsin-Madison said in a statement that it will investigate students “implicated in the incident.”
Police found roughly 30 partially clothed young men packed inside a sweltering basement at a Wisconsin fraternity house, covered in food, condiments and other liquids — with several showing signs of being physically struck.

Some will do anything to sit sat the cool kids table.
I don’t understand the appeal of the whole Greek Life thing.
It’s all summed up in the credits to Animal House:
“Senator and Mrs. John Blutarsky, Washington DC.”
It “what you know” doesn’t pan out, there’s always “who you know,”
Or “where you know the bodies are buried.”
“It’s amazing this still happens, even with all the anti-hazing laws now.”
Hardly. Like it or not, it is a cultural variation of an instinctual ritual bonding of hominid males since we swung down from the trees. It’s a part of our basic nature that can no more be eradicated by laws than Marx could eradicate our racial urge to acquire property and territory.
“Hold out your fotos!”
“Racial urge to acquire property and territory”?????
That’s limited to the melanin deficient, right?
Yes, along with a work ethic, being on time, low murder rates, and high credit scores.
This article doesn’t mention it, but this incident is also a great argument for denying sovereign franchise to anyone under the age of 30.
If they’re adults and they’ve consented, how is this the state’s business? What justifies the state making laws against this?
It is adjacent to the University and not affiliated with the University for 10 years. Not even sure if hazing applies. Sounds more like simple assault. The solution here is better parenting that should have started 18 years earlier. Ironically, Oberlin banned fraternities in 1937 because it was deemed that they are harmful to developing social skills, and I kind of (reluctantly) agree with them on that one.
If it’s just simple assault then consent makes it lawful.
Let’s take large numbers of adolescent fools, confine them in small areas with no adult supervision (I do not include most faculty and administrators in the category “adult”), and see what happens.
Listen you nancy girls – if you read the article they were covered in condiments, shirtless, and the thermostat was set to 81. THAT’S HAZING? That’s the weakest hazing I’ve ever heard of. So the brothers made them take their shirts off, sprayed ketchup and mustard on the pledges, and turned the thermostat up to 81? In Wisconsin? IN OCTOBER!?! That’s just screwing around, not hazing. And the fraternity basement was filthy? Well so is EVERY FRATERNITY! They are teenaged boys.
If they forced them to drink until they had alcohol poisoning that’s different. But this is just guys screwing around.
So far if you read the facts, it’s just boys messing around with each other. Lighten up.
