Fetterman Stuns Democrats With Video Appearance at GOP Midterm Convention

“I’m always going to reject the extremes and socialism and that anti-American way of life.”

Senator John Fetterman of Pennsylvania caused an uproar among members of his party this week by making a friendly appearance at the Republican midterm convention in Texas.

Fetterman appeared only on video, not in person, but said he is happy to keep working with Trump to protect the American steel industry. He also rejected socialism and took the opportunity to introduce Dave McCormick, the other senator from Pennsylvania, a Republican he considers a friend.

FOX News reports:

Dem senator delivers surprise video at Republican convention backing McCormick

Sen. John Fetterman, D-Pa., delivered a surprise video message at the GOP midterm convention Wednesday night, praising President Donald Trump and Republican Sen. Dave McCormick while rejecting what he described as the Democratic Party’s “extremes and socialism.”

“I’m a commonsense Democrat. I’m always going to stand with America,” Fetterman said. “I’m always going to reject the extremes and socialism and that anti-American way of life.”

Fetterman introduced McCormick, who is seeking re-election to the Senate, as “the kind of senator that gets the job done” and someone who will “fight for Pennsylvania.”

Standing in front of an iconic U.S. steel mill, Fetterman said he was proud to work with McCormick and Trump to defend Pennsylvania’s steel industry, which remains a central part of the state’s economic and political identity.

“That’s exactly the kind of thing that we will work together and will work with President Trump to fight and defend the steel way of life right here in the Steel Valley,” Fetterman said.

The message was notable because Fetterman is a sitting Democratic senator appearing at the Republican Party’s first midterm convention, where Trump is expected to rally GOP voters ahead of the Nov. 3 elections.

His appearance also highlighted his increasingly strained relationship with Democratic leaders and the party’s left wing. Fetterman has repeatedly broken with Democrats on issues including Israel, immigration and Trump’s military actions against Iran.

Watch:

Fetterman has said repeatedly that he is not changing parties, but that has not stopped wild speculation.

On MSNOW, Jen Psaki and guest Mitch Landrieu had a little bit of a meltdown over this.

On the Republican side, John Thune said that Fetterman would be welcomed in the GOP.

The Hill reports:

Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) said Tuesday that Republicans would “welcome” Sen. John Fetterman (D-Pa.) into their conference if he decides to leave the Democratic Party over growing hostility to Isreal among progressive Democrats.

“Yes, we would welcome him,” Thune said when asked whether Republicans would roll out the red carpet for Fetterman if he ever decides to leave the Democratic Party.

Thune said he’s had “conversations” with the maverick Democratic senator — as have several other GOP colleagues – about a potential party switch.

“I have had conversations with him in the past as have many of my colleagues about the challenges he faces in his caucus. And there are many of us who, I think, would welcome the opportunity to have him join the Republican conference but ultimately that’s a decision that’s up to him,” Thune said.

Thune argued that the Democratic Party is “moving further and further, more radically, to the more extreme left on a lot of issues.”

He should consider following up with, “Unlike most of my Democrat colleagues, I’m neither a Communist nor insane.” Get right to the point!

When a senator who has been staunchly Democrat his whole life is alarmed at the shift of the Overton Window, it’s pretty dramatic. He thinks for himself instead of saying what the loud voices insist on. He’s worthy of respect, IMO, even though his opinions might not align 100% with Republicans’.

Just goes to show there’s a difference in Democrat and Dimocrat. One little letter says much.

Even if most of his opinions align with the democrats now anyways he should be respected. As you say he thinks for himself and seems approachable. That is all you can ask for from a senator for another party and is sorely lacking in most of not all democrats.

Well, lets see how big the left’s “Big Tent” really is.

He is the only sane person in the party. Thankful he will stand up to the democratic party of mental illness and socialism.

It would be good if Fetterman realized he would be more effective if he joined the Republican Party. His solitary voice of common sense gets lost in the Democrap miasma.

No, he is still a Democrat.
He may be close to an old-world patriotic Democrat than the rest…
      But, Democrat just the same.
He can cause more grief from inside that party than he ever could as a Republican.

Senator Fetterman and Representative Richie Torres.

Two out of a Dhimmi-crat Party of thousands of federal, state and local officials.

    What a shameful statistic.

Off Topic I see DJT is promising 5 grand to every American adult if the GOP wins the mid-terms.

I know I will get down-ticked for thi but, has this man completely lost his mind?

I’m curious about this guy, he’s not afraid to go against the grain of his party so is it that his constituents are not as on board with the crazy stuff most democrats talk about?
Or does he just not care if he wins re election.

He is well-liked across the political spectrum because he tries to do what’s best for his constituents instead of the big lobbies. I wish more politicians were like that.

He only goes against the grain of the loons in his party. Fetterman still has about an 80-90% Dem voting record, so he’s not going to switch to Republican, but he’s a infidel to the rock-solid leftists who want to see the country burn, so they’ll fight like starved weasels to keep him from being relelected.

I cannot take a position on Fetterman. I did not like him at first just for his refusal to follow the norm of dressing as a Congressman should. It is (in American culture) as close to a badge of office as tradition allows. Besides he looks like Lurch from the Munsters; the look does not become him. Then the whole brain damage affair. This did not seem a good omen to me.

I do think that he seems very sane and particularly rational now, and I do like his stance of independence from party dictates. However I dislike the exact same thing in Murkowski of Alaska or Collins of Maine. Pick a lane. Further I always worry about converts – every zealot former tobacco addict is going to eventually steal a smoke.

So hurrah Fetterman but…

At least he doesn’t wear one of those tacky junk – jewelry flag lapel pins.

In an even bigger chad move, Fetterman packaged up his lump and UPSed it to arrive next week to the DSA midterm convention.

That’s the one he inflates, then floats out the window while talking on the phone. Meanwhile, Kato is hiding in the top of the bedposts…

I predict many democrats will soon be affected with FDS (Fetterman Derangement Syndrome).

I think it would be good if he joins, and votes with the GOP. Congress operates via votes.

Centrism isn’t rewarded in this country and changing parties is a political death sentence.

Honestly, if more people could find nuance and a center instead of playing teams, this country would be far better off.

Reminds me of Zell Miller.

Even better, go to YouTube and watch Bobby Kennedy Jr’s speech. It was the best political speech I have heard since Ronald Reagan.

Late, late but gotta say, me and my broken brain keep rooting for Keystone Lurch, running rings around the snarky pants, with his half a mind and hoodie.

Solidarity brother. If *we* can make more sense than the dedicated pros… they should maybe consider other work. Just sayin.
