WNBA Player Ejected for Clotheslining Sophie Cunningham Issues Ominous Warning

By now, the world has heard what happened during Saturday’s WNBA game between the Chicago Sky and the Indiana Fever. But just to recap: Late in the first quarter, as the Fever’s Sophie Cunningham drove toward the basket for a layup, the Sky’s DiJonai Carrington struck her across the head and neck, clotheslining her and sending her crashing to the floor. It was a deliberate move from an aggressive player.
Officials ruled the hit a Flagrant 2 foul — a serious foul “involving excessive or unnecessary contact” — and immediately ejected Carrington from the game.

Incredibly, after committing a hard foul on Cunningham, Carrington blamed her ejection from the game on white privilege. She posted the following message on her Threads account: “WHITE PRIVILEGE @indianafever”

This was not unusual behavior for Carrington. Fox News reminded readers that during the 2024 WNBA Playoffs, “Carrington delivered a brutal blow directly to the eye of then-rookie sensation Caitlin Clark.”

Following the game, Cunningham stated the obvious: Carrington’s flagrant foul was intentional. She said, “Clearly, I think it was like unnecessary. I’ve never really spoken to her and have no beef with her, but I guess she has some pent up stuff. So get your s— off. That’s fine. I can take it … Yeah, it’s intentional.”
Cunningham’s “enlightened” coach, Stephanie White, saw things differently. She told reporters, “Yeah, I mean, look, it was a hard foul. I don’t think that DiJonai [Carrington] intentionally came out to get her across the neck like she did. But it did happen and I thought it was the right call.”
But she didn’t stop there.
“You know, one of the things about Nay [nickname for Carrington] is that she’s gonna play her butt off, man. She’s gonna compete. Nobody’s gonna go walking in for a layup. And so, I don’t oppose the hard foul. But I also don’t think that she intentionally went for the neck.”

This is the same coach who defended Phoenix Mercury forward Alyssa Thomas after she punched Caitlin Clark in the throat in June.

She also refused to rule out allowing biological men to play in women’s sports, saying recently, “I just don’t feel like exclusion is an answer, and I think that we need to have deeper, more layered conversations.”
White was either gaslighting or else she is so deeply committed to her woke ideology that such responses have become almost reflexive. Unfortunately, she is hardly alone.

Like White, Carrington is steeped in the woke ideology that swept through American culture in the aftermath of George Floyd’s death. That she would invoke “white privilege” after committing a deliberate violation speaks volumes.

Women’s Basketball above the HS level is lousy basketball. Sadly, it used to be that women were more fundamentally sound than men were, because they had to be to play well. Now it seems like higher levels of women’s BK tries to play run and gun NBA style ball without the physical capability to do it. That’s one thing that Catlin Clark does that makes her such a joy to watch, she knows the game and plays it the right way.
But just like the NBA these days (and the NFL) the problem is not the game itself, it is the people playing it, and the owners who care only about profit, and not necessarily winning anymore. When the WNBA and NBA turn into a street ball game of throwing 3’s, f-bombs, almost open combat at the rim, and almost brawls in half the games, its unwatchable.
It’s a terrible thing to see happen to a great, great sport.

I used those words in a work environment once and they worked like a miracle. Stopped my supervisor cold from entertaining petty complaints about my emails (my direct nature offended my co-workers, most native to the PNW and very laid-back and indirect). They should try it.
A coach openly praising the deliberate ‘hard foul’ as an acceptable part of the game should be reminded that she’s endorsed on court conduct not only beyond the rules a ‘foul’ but one which exceeds normal level of intensity ‘hard’. She also made the case for ‘deliberate foul’ by praising Carrington ‘…nobody’s gonna go walking in for a layup’. In sum she made the case for someone to intentionally make hard and deliberate contact with another in this case leaping and grabbing the neck/head of the victim with sufficient force to throw them down.
Referees police conduct on the court/field of play within the rules of the game. That’s what the players signed up for. When incidents like a hard deliberate foul occur that’s not ‘part of the game’. If it happened on the sidewalk outside the arena that would be a crime, why would the court be any different? It is past time to end the deliberate hard foul in basketball. Alternatively the league can simply up their insurance, let the players play, and be willing to ignore retaliation. Since the WNBA doesn’t want to exclude such conduct, no whining when a player deliberately takes revenge by yanking out the hair/extensions of their target, to bring them to the ground and kicking their teeth in until they get tired. No running over to interfere, no sending security or police to intervene, detain or arrest b/c deliberate/intentional forceful striking/contact on the court is ‘part of the game’.

Yep. Basketball isn’t supposed to be a contact sport much less a collision sport. If they wanna go so hard to show their toughness then they can sign up for women’s rugby. A bunch of largely butch women hacking and fouling each other b/c most lack the ability to offer much else in the way of entertainment value in terms of basketball skill is why attendance and fan interest didn’t arrive until Clark and a few other skilled players arrived.

You contend basketball is a contact sport by design, from inception and I wholeheartedly disagree. Now we could look at different eras of how the rules of basketball were or were not strictly enforced. Elsewhere you made mention of Detroit Pistons ‘bully ball’. I don’t discount that history but the difference is we’re discussing the rules of the game and strict enforcement ..which in that era the strict enforcement of fouls and especially hard/deliberate fouls was very obviously NOT closely adhered to. The rules didn’t really change much from then to now so much as the willingness to enforce the existing rules become the norm.
In sum in contrast to basketball both American football and rugby were designed to be and remain contact/collision sports.

Naismith’s rules for the sport allowed for contact. What was outlawed was excessive contact. As I said, the game, rules and casebook continues that basic principle and does not allow contact that gains an advantage.
Secondly, if you want to claim some misguided and factually incorrect position, you would have to believe that no dribbling would be allowed today as dribbling is banned in the original rules. You would have to agree to allow goaltending, as that was allowed in the original rules. Obviously the three point shot would be gone as well. (And of course, no open woven nets, but instead baskets with a closed bottom,)

Understand that the NBA underwrites this league financially, so leadership, coaching and players are under no financial obligation to make a good watchable product. Because of 30 years of this, the league has lost those that were grateful for the opportunity and instead dominated by those who feel victimized. Caitlin and Sophie have exposed this, and must be punished.
The NBA gives only $15 million a year to the WNBA.
That is less than 1% of the salary cap for an entire, individual NBA TEAM. When you factor in the fact that NBA owners also own 60% of the WNBA teams, it is no wonder why the NBA Board of Governors give the WNBA the $15 million.
Clark exposed the fact that the league is fundamentally unsound on the court, and has played the “victim” just as much as anyone.

Actually, it was more of a case of supporting women’s sports in general.
The women’s soccer team, softball teams, etc. brought attention to women and to women’s sports. The NBA sought to get in the ground floor of women’s basketball to support and grow the sport.
In Europe and the Soviet Union, women’s teams were initially started by and supported by the men’s team and leagues. For some reason that model worked well in the rest of the world and not here.

Yep whatever else she clearly did mean to initiate a deliberate hard foul from behind and definitely decided to make contact high at head/neck area then when contact made she secured a grip/hold and used momentum/force to drive Cunningham to the floor. As to the foul, many will remember the days of the Pistons, Celtics, Spurs, etc., where this type of foul was common. The NBA, college, and NFHSAA has worked to eliminate this type of foul where there is a good possibility of injury, while still allowing a “hard foul” as legitimate basketball play.
The WNBA has multiple problems. First is the level of play. It is horrible. I am not sure there is a way to clean up the play while allowing the horrible play to continue.
The referees are in a horrible place where the public sees them as not being able to do anything right. There is a perception of bias no matter what is called. Good referees have quit the WNBA because of a lack of support from the league and a lack of understanding of officiating from the fans. The problem is that the pool from which to draw referees is dwindling. There is not a league (in any sport) at the entry level (high school and low college) that is not screaming for sports officials.
It used to be that referees would spend an “apprenticeship” of sorts before being called to do “big” (high level) games. Now, there are not enough officials to fill the open spots, so less qualified and less seasoned officials are being called up.
Finally, the WNBA is embroiled in a civil war of “wokeness.” It is killing the league. Players claim discrimination on the basis of race. (And it doesn’t matter the race ……it is everywhere.) The trans / LGBTQ+ discussion crosses the line from a “discussion” to accusations of “hatred” and “ignorance” unless you agree with other people. There is no discussion to be found – just lines drawn in the sand.
Sue Bird and Cheryl Miller (both basketball HOF’ers) said of this incident that it is indicative of the “outside interests” who are trying to destroy the WNBA, When the so called “experts” refuse to acknowledge that it was Carrington who introduced race and “privilege” into this play.
It was a hard foul. Period. People should just accept the play, and the punishment and move on, but players won’t. The league won’t.
