U. Washington Prof Openly Advertises Herself as a ‘Marxist Scholar’

UW professor with broad collection of leftist research and publications advertises herself as a ‘Marxist scholar’

A University of Washington professor openly advertises herself as a Marxist while advancing left-wing ideas involving feminism, Marxism, and racial capitalism in her teaching and research.

Alys Eve Weinbaum, a professor in the school’s Department of English, has listed research interests including “Critical Theory,” “Decolonial,” “Feminism and Feminist Theory,” “Race and Ethnicity,” and “Sexuality” on her faculty webpage.

Weinbaum holds a bachelor’s degree in women’s studies from Brown University and a master’s degree in critical theory from the University of Sussex.

“I am a feminist, Marxist, and anti-racist scholar of modern and contemporary transatlantic literature and culture,” Weinbaum declares on her webpage. “I teach courses on feminism, gender and sexuality, Marxism, race and racial formation, racial capitalism, African American literature, slave and neo-slave narratives, speculative fiction, the reproductive body and labor, narrativization of historical trauma and memory, and reproductive cultures and politics, past and present.”

Both courses taught by Weinbaum in spring 2026 revolved around the topic of Marxism. The first, titled “Marxism and Literary Theory,” reviewed the writings of Karl Marx, Friedrich Engels, and subsequent socialist philosophers and examined how those thinkers sought to “understand how capitalism, racism, and sexism intersect and work together to create dominant systems of power.”

“Through our collective engagement with these, we will seek to understand how a materialist method indebted to Marx and Engels shapes contemporary approaches to cultural production, and how diverse critical practices (sometimes given labels such as ‘critical theory,’ ‘feminist theory,’ ‘critical race theory,’ ‘de/colonial studies’ or ‘cultural studies’) sit within an expansive Marxist intellectual tradition,” the course description reads.

The second course, “Cultural Studies,” examined “how key Marxist ideas about historical materialism and dialectics have been engaged by the so-called Black Radical Tradition, by feminists focused on the gendered, sexualized, and reproductive dynamics of capitalism, and by scholars who have sought to engage Marxism in and for cultural analysis.”
