Trump Unloads After Carney Blows Up Trade Talks
Trump also accused Canada of imposing heavy tariffs on American farmers for years. It was his first public response since the talks collapsed Friday night.
President Donald Trump responded Sunday after Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney walked away from trade negotiations and accused Washington of trying to pressure Canada into a bad deal.
“Canada wants the benefits of being a State, without being one!!!”
He followed with a blunt warning:
“No more!!!”
Trump also accused Canada of imposing heavy tariffs on American farmers for years. It was his first public response since the talks collapsed Friday night.
The administration’s new 50 percent tariffs took effect early Saturday on roughly $20 billion in Canadian goods. The list includes wine, hockey sticks, cement and plywood. A product can qualify under the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreementt and still get hit. Energy, potash, and critical minerals were left out, along with goods already subject to separate national-security tariffs.
Carney offered Canada’s version of the breakdown Saturday. He said American negotiators introduced new demands in the final hour involving Canada’s trade relationships with other countries, its auto industry and protections for Canadian culture and the French language. U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer disputed that account, saying it was Canada that walked back prior commitments and introduced new demands of its own.
“The U.S. introduced at the last hours, in the last hour, efforts to restrict our ability to have other trade deals.”
He framed the broader stakes in blunt terms:
“It’s a power play and, you know, [it] becomes a question of sovereignty.”
Carney still rejected the package: “They asked too much, and they offered too little.”
Canada set Sept. 8 for its countertariffs, with U.S. steel, dairy, appliances, farm equipment, pulp and paper, and electronics on the list. Carney also promised help for Canadian businesses but did not offer details Saturday.
Greer called Canada’s decision a “missed opportunity.” The U.S. offer included lower tariffs on Canadian steel, aluminum, autos and lumber, plus a broader partnership covering critical minerals, aerospace, digital trade and export controls.
Zero tariffs were not on the table. The reported offer set steel and aluminum at 25 percent instead of 50 percent, but capped the amount of Canadian steel that could qualify. Autos went from 25 percent to 15 percent, with U.S.-made parts counted in the formula.
American negotiators wanted an end to provincial boycotts of U.S. wine and spirits, no more Canadian tariffs on American cars and more access to Canada’s protected dairy market. Ottawa came looking for lower U.S. tariffs on steel, aluminum, autos and softwood lumber.
Carney reached for martial language to describe the tariffs:
“We’re attacked. Like you’re at war when you get attacked, we got attacked.”
He pivoted quickly to defiance:
“We’ve got the reserves. We’ve got resilience. We have the plan.”
It is worth noting that the attack he described came after Canada spent decades running protected dairy and lumber markets while blocking American wine and spirits from provincial shelves.
Carney walked away with lower U.S. tariffs still sitting on the table, and the 50 percent rate took effect. Canada gets its turn Sept. 8.

We haven’t had too much luck invading Canada in the past. Besides I doubt we want to add their socialists and muslims to the lot we already have,
Who said invade? Just blockade them, it isn’t as if the Canadian Navy could prevent it. Nor can they rely on the British Navy to come save them. The Brits literally have more Admirals on active service than operational warships. For that matter a real Canadian govt push to sell out to China and Alberta would probably be more inclined to work with the USA and likely large sections of BC outside Vancouver among other areas.
A blockade might be a challenge given their coastline and our preoccupation with Iran. It’s going to be interesting to see what happens with Alberta and if that has any effect on Quebec.
FWIW the US Coast Guard probably has more than 3x the tonnage of the Canadian Navy. Canada has (on the books not necessarily operational) 12 frigates and 4 subs while the USCG alone has over 200 cutters some which could be classed as frigates. An economic blockade targets ports not coastlines. The container ships and oil/LNG transfers require specialized equipment of modern port facilities to do more than a pittance of traffic. That’s just on the water not counting the enormous disparity in combat and surveillance aircraft or vast edge in drones.

Canada is a suburb.
That is not a knock. Suburbs are nice places to live. Get a lot of advantages of the city while avoiding most of the problems.

2025 Canada’s exports to the US was 17.6% of their GDP.
The US can, and really should, require Canada to agree to whatever we want. Period. They really have no choice.

Almost 20 years ago, some 30,000+ companies started by MIT profs and alumni were bringing in almost $2 trillion annually.* A lot happens in 20 years, but a decline in that figure isn’t one of them. It’s probably at least half again that much now, if not twice. Considered as a country’s GDP, it would rank around #10 worldwide. The population of this “country” is around 140,000–tally of living alumni. Canada’s population is 41.5million, or close to 300 times that. Draw your own conclusions.

They were buying Chinese steel and other products and then shipping it to the US claiming it was Canadian to help China dodge tariffs. The US told them to knock it off, and Canada refused.

All these comments re: blockade or military intervention are as crazy as Trump talking about making Canada the 51st state. Eventually this will be settled out. Trump is trying to level the playing field and change the rules and I give him credit for that – but this takes time and the playing field can’t be made level all of a sudden.
