Mount St. Mary’s Theology Course Assigns Book Framing New Testament Through Race

Required Mount St. Mary’s theology course teaches New Testament through ‘racial justice’ lens

Students at Mount St. Mary’s University in Emmitsburg, Maryland, are required to complete a theology course that assigns a book interpreting the New Testament through themes including “racial justice,” “antiracist allyship,” and “cultural assimilation.”

The university’s course catalog mandates all theology majors must complete Made in God’s Image, a theology course examining Catholic Social Teaching through contemporary issues including racism, restorative justice, health care, technology, and war. Students satisfy the requirement by enrolling in one of the approved course sections.

One summer 2026 section taught by theology professor Dr. Love L. Sechrest requires students to read her book, Race and Rhyme: Rereading the New Testament.

In the book, Sechrest examines New Testament passages involving what she describes as “intergroup conflict, ethnoracial tension, and power dynamics between dominant and minoritized groups.” She writes that her interpretation draws in part from her perspective as a “Black woman scholar.”

Rather than focusing solely on traditional biblical interpretation, Sechrest develops what she calls “associative hermeneutics,” using New Testament passages to explore modern concepts including “racial justice,” “antiracist allyship,” “cultural assimilation,” “gendered stereotypes,” and coalition-building among different identity groups.

A review published by The Christian Century states that Sechrest’s interpretive framework incorporates insights from Critical Race Theory alongside “womanist sensibilities.”

Sechrest’s broader academic work similarly centers on race and theology. Her university biography lists research interests including African American biblical hermeneutics, womanist and feminist hermeneutics, and race and ethnicity.

She also co-edited Can “White” People Be Saved? Triangulating Race, Theology, and Mission, a collection arguing Christians should overcome what contributors describe as the “heresy of whiteness.”
