Monmouth U. Trains Educational Counseling Majors to be ‘Social Justice Advocates’

Private universities are increasingly embracing so-called “social justice” curricula, expanding efforts to weave ideological advocacy into the classroom.
A recent analysis by CriticalRace.Org found that Monmouth University’s Educational Counseling Program aims to ensure that “all students are trained as social justice advocates.” The private New Jersey university, which charges $48,340 in annual tuition, incorporates “Multicultural and Social Justice Counseling Competencies” throughout its curriculum, according to the program’s manual.
“Educational Counseling program curriculum is framed by the Multicultural and Social Justice Counseling Competencies (MSJCC), which ensures that all students are trained as social justice advocates,” reads the 2025-2026 Educational Counseling Program Manual.
Highlighted examples of how the program creates these “social justice advocates” include an “Advanced Race & Racism course,” which requires students to participate in an “‘outside of the classroom’ anti-racism project.”
Other highlighted program activities include implicit bias assessments, immersive “bias-disruption experiences,” and social justice activities that are “infused in all courses from start to finish.”
Monmouth University offers several programs focused on teaching “social justice,” including initiatives specifically geared toward incorporating these concepts into K–12 classrooms. The university’s “Social Justice Academy” targets nearby K–12 school systems and seeks to incorporate “social justice education” into their curricula.
The program teaches participants through seminars and lectures led by “experts in diversity, equity, and inclusion,” who are then placed in “positions to serve as social justice leaders within their schools” after graduation.
The push for “social justice” programming is hardly unique to Monmouth University. Past CriticalRace.Org findings reveal that the private Drexel University also provides specific programming aimed at coaching students on left-leaning social justice ideology.
The Drexel Liberty Scholars Program provides a renewable scholarship award that covers “100 percent” of tuition and fees for students who wish to become the “social justice advocates of tomorrow.”
“We strive to strengthen our commitment to diversity, inclusion, and social justice by cultivating the thought leaders and social justice advocates of tomorrow,” states the program’s webpage.
