Ethics Committee Recommends Censuring GOP Rep. Chuck Edwards for Sexual Harassment Violations

The Ethics Committee recommended the House of Representatives censure Rep. Chuck Edwards (R-NC) for “failing to adhere to the spirit of rules prohibiting sexual harassment of and unwanted advances to House
staffers.”

Specifically, the Committee found that Representative Edwards engaged in persistent unprofessional and inappropriate conduct towards two young female staffers. While Representative Edwards denied that any of his conduct was intended as a sexual or romantic advance, his pattern of behavior would lead a reasonable observer to interpret it as such, including providing the young women with lavish and recurrent gifts, making comments regarding their appearance and dress, inviting them to intimate dinners and vacations, sending notes regarding his effusive affection, and inviting them to other activities as a way to spend time together. The Committee found no evidence that Representative Edwards engaged in sexual activity with or explicitly propositioned any individual under his employ. Representative Edwards was aware, however, that his excessive attention toward the young women had led to rumors and innuendo in the office. Both women were uncomfortable with his behavior (which they attempted to communicate) but were put in an untenable position by virtue of his status as their boss and a Member of Congress. Representative Edwards was at minimum blind to that reality, and at worst, dismissive of the impact his inappropriate conduct had on the careers and wellbeing of two women on his staff.
The committee stressed it relied on testimony, “but also contemporaneous text messages.”
You know, in the real world, Edwards would lose his job.
A censure is only an official reprimand for bad behavior. Edwards might lose official voting power or committee chairs. In other words, he might not be able to perform his normal job.
I have to admit, all of those actions would even make me uncomfortable, even if there wasn’t anything nefarious behind it. It’s hard to make me uncomfortable. But the details in the report are just not professional.
And yes, fear of repercussions for saying no is absolutely real, especially those in government.
For Staffer 2, Edwards did yardwork at her house and had his driver “pick her up and drop her off for events and activities.”
Edwards even missed two House votes to help Staffer 2 decorate her Christmas tree.
Staffer 2 received many poems from Edwards, including one that he read at her going-away party as part of a slideshow. He cried during the presentation.
“Several staffers present testified that they felt uncomfortable, and Representative Edwards acknowledged in his own testimony that he could tell the staff felt uncomfortable,” according to the report.
Edwards also planned outings with Staffer 1 and 2. For the latter, the congressman suggested they “’go to Annapolis for lunch, meditate by its water, stroll about town, find a day spa, see a movie, or wipe out the casino’ and that he was ‘over thinking . . . but I really want you to enjoy our time together nearly as much as I know [I] will [].;”
The next day, Edwards sent Staffer 2 photographs, telling her “he would ‘cherish every moment of our time together these last couple of days.'”
In May, Axios reported that Edwards told one “young female staffer that she had ‘written a complex chapter in my heart’ shortly before she was set to leave his office.”
Two sources claimed Edwards and a woman spent time during a Las Vegas vacation:
Edwards and the woman spent time vacationing together in Las Vegas, months after she had left his office, according to two sources familiar with the trip.
- Axios reviewed receipts showing Edwards had booked two rooms at the Bellagio hotel from Nov. 8 to Nov. 11 in 2025, as well as messages indicating that the woman was also in Las Vegas on at least one of those dates.
- At the time, staff in Edwards’ office were concerned about the congressman returning to Washington to vote on reopening the government amid shutdown-related airport delays, per the two sources.
Edwards has denied all allegations, describing them as “horseshit.”
The congressman refused to step down, unlike former Reps. Eric Swalwell (D-CA), Tony Gonzalez (R-TX), and Shaila Cherfilus-McCormick (D-FL). All of them left before the committee could finish its investigations.
It turns out Edwards’ office has one of the highest turnover rates in Congress. He experienced a 57% rate in 2025 alone, while the average is 27%.

Sorry but we’re in an existential war for the future of the country. Unless he got physical I don’t give a shit, and to be cruelly honest about it I’ve seen how female hill staffers dress and they like the attention. Go ahead and call me a monster but it’s the truth. If he was handsome this wouldn’t even be a story.
Bruh, no means no. That said, she’s gotta be willing to be an adult and clearly/unequivocally say no and certainly not send mixed signals by accepting gifts or feigning interest out of politeness. Does a power dynamic still operate, sure but the workplace/society of 2026 isn’t the that of the ’90s much less the ’50s. It isn’t hard not to come across as creepy, any response she gives to your overtures other than an enthusiastic yes means she’s not worth your time, energy, effort or money in pursuing so back off and go find someone else who’s more receptive.

On the one hand, his mamma and daddy didn’t raise him right and now he’ll face the consequences, as he must.
On the other hand, Capitol Hill is flush with some of the most stunningly beautiful women that you’ll ever see, some that are *clearly* seeking their SO, be it an elected official or an up and coming staffer.
There are two sides to every coin and if you’re an ugly bastard (like me) you need to realize that you’re in the look but not touch category.
Nowadays even looking can get you in trouble. That really is insane but it is what it is.
I consciously work at distinguishing between attractiveness and beauty. The profoundly powerful automatic instant pattern matcher, which is the human brain, is unreliable in the long run.
I am retired now, but hard experience on the battlefield of corporate America made me cautious. I made a conscious and deliberate effort to never, ever, tell a woman at work that I thought she was pretty. I might say, “that’s a nice outfit.” Now having said that, if this guy is “guilty” or guilty, I don’t care if he’s a Republican or whatever. When you enter the gladiators’ arena, you enter with the full knowledge that everyone will try to take you out any way they can. If you leave them a chance for a cheap shot, well, that’s on you. You knew she was a woman when you closed the office door with just the two of you insdie.

They parade around in clothing that goes right up to the line, walk around all dolled with fawning smiles and make note of every misstep, to be used later as it might suit them.
A savvy guy knows to just look over their shoulder in the middle distance, engage in no small talk or humor and politely dismiss them from his presence as soon as civilly acceptable.

rhhardin has the best advice, do not talk to them. I seen this same merry go round when I worked for the federal government. Ignore them like the plague they are. We had one women that actually made money accusing people of sexual harassment. After awhile she had to move because no one would talk to her, so she had to find new hunting grounds.
If they’d had to pay off victims from the slush fund, we’d never hear about this.
Playing along with powerful creepy bosses can be useful, until it isn’t. Once their attentions have been properly exploited they can then be denounced for lagniappe, and thus such cycles evolve, just as they ever have.
