Columbia UAW Drops Israel Divestment Demand From Contract Negotiation

Columbia UAW backs off Israel divestment demand
The Student Workers of Columbia-United Auto Workers (SWC) has withdrawn a contract bargaining demand calling on Columbia University to divest from Israel and other entities the union claims are violating international law.
The union dropped the proposal during a recent bargaining session with university administrators after previously making pro-Palestinian demands a central part of its negotiations, as first reported by the Columbia Daily Spectator.
The withdrawn proposal, previously posted on a page that has since been removed from the SWC website, declared that “Columbia Must Respect International Law” and urged the university to divest from Israel and other entities the union alleged were violating international law.
The SWC also withdrew a separate “Cops Off Campus” bargaining demand seeking to remove police from university property.
The SWC represents roughly 3,000 academic workers at Columbia University in New York City. Labor Notes reported in 2024 that the union voted to join the Columbia University Apartheid Divest coalition, which helped organize the anti-Israel encampment protests on campus.
The union’s demands also reflect broader activism within the United Auto Workers. UAW Labor for Palestine has promoted similar anti-Israel initiatives, including a ceasefire petition endorsed by 13 Democratic members of Congress during the Biden administration.
In announcing the petition, the group stated, “We cannot bomb our way to peace.”
The SWC regularly posts political content on social media. Following New York primary elections on June 26, the union congratulated “fellow organizers who took on tough fights with Columbia University” after former encampment protester Darializa Avila Chevalier won a Democratic primary.
The union has also promoted pro-Palestinian events, including a week-long “Land Day Land Back” fundraiser selling baked goods, stickers, and zines for Palestine.

Did I miss the irony of the Columbia students being represented by the UAW.? In case they get grease on their hands?
