Canada Fires Back With Tariffs on Variety of U.S. Items

Canada’s Department of Finance announced retaliatory tariffs as the trade war heats up with the Trump administration:
Following the U.S. decision to impose a 50 per cent tariff on $27.6 billion of Canadian goods effective August 22, Minister Champagne confirmed today that Canada will match the new U.S. tariffs dollar for dollar, rate for rate, with additional Canadian tariffs on U.S. goods. This focused response will protect Canadian workers, farmers, fishers, families, and businesses, defend industries harmed by unjustified U.S. tariffs, and help Canadian producers compete with U.S. products in the Canadian market.
Effective September 8, Canada will impose counter-tariffs of 15, 25 and 50 per cent on products drawn from those targeted by U.S. Section 338 and Section 232 tariffs, with the rate for each product matching the corresponding U.S. rate.
Canada’s counter tariffs will apply to products covering $27.6 billion in imports from the U.S. and will focus on sectors such as steel, dairy, appliances, agricultural equipment, pulp and paper, and electronics, that are most impacted by U.S. tariffs.
The government will also provide support to workers and businesses affected by the U.S. tariffs with a $7.5 billion package.
Sigh. I hate tariffs.
However, Trump’s 50% tariffs on Canadian products sound scary, but trade experts pointed out the narrow scope of the levies.
The move “only applies to about 5% of Canada’s exports to the U.S.”
“If Canada’s retaliatory tariffs are similarly narrow, then neither set of tariffs would cause immediate, economy-wide upheaval, and both sides could live with them for some time,” trade attorney Patrick Childress told CBS News.

Tariffs of any amount stink, but this is overall ridiculous. If you’re going to punish a country, then go big or go home.
At least Prime Minister Mark Carney admitted that the tariffs “will raise costs and reduce choice for Canadians.”

They’re adding more tariffs to dairy?
Canada is becoming (or already is) a Chinese client state. Canada has entered into a strategic partnership with China and, like China, is apparently the only other country choosing retaliation over negotiations. We cannot have Chinese materials and products masquerading as Canadian entering the US to evade trade and other restrictions, especially materials necessary for defense.
Canada is more correctly a Euro client state with strong connections with China (as does the Euro elites). It’s a de-facto coalition to counter the U.S. Carney has deep ties to Britain, Europe, Euro-banking, and all the proper Soros-types, so he was the perfect choice to replace Trudeau, if you’re looking to fight the U.S.
The Euros want to pull Canada away from us, and that Mr. Carney is doing is designed to that end. China wants the same and is happy to indulge Carney and the Grits (for a price of course, always for a price).
Yes, we can’t have Chinese goods masquerading as Canadian. But that’s the least of our concerns with Mr. Carney. He wants Canada tied at the hip to Europe. That’s not good for us.
The EU is using or wants to use Canada as a conduit for imports to the US that otherwise would be restricted or banned by US trade rules. And if so to the extent of China’s aspirations? News to me.

Canada has — and always has had — official ties to the British monarchy. It’s a little late to ponder the interesting consequences of that now.
It makes the Greenland deal look even more necessary if we can’t base reliably in Canada. Also makes Alberta as 51st state a better deal for our security.

Tariffs are tools to modify behavior of foreign countries. Canada is acting like a small yapping dog here. We don’t actually need a single thing they export.

And we’ve let other countries screw us with them for far too long, particularly Canada, who has set such ridiculous tariffs on certain things that it serves as a de facto hard cap on imports.
Just like so many other things, yes, a perfect world of free trade has zero tariffs. But we don’t have a perfect world. We have a world in which ONLY the US has zero tariffs.
Free trade is reciprocal. Tariffs are reciprocal. This isn’t complicated, or ridiculous.
Not to mention non tariff trade barriers Canada and individual Provinces have erected to hamper/block US exports particularly on US Agricultural sector.
We have the largest, wealthiest free-trade zone in the history of man — the United States.
the problem is not tariffs, it’s the trade laws, Canada in a fit of nationalism passed a law in the 70s’ that 51 percent of content on their media had to be of Canadian orgin, that resulted in one of my favorite radion stations CKLW stopping from being a top 40 station, and from what I understand they want to apply it to streaming services. When I worked at fruit exchange several decades ago, if we sold produce to a Canadian store we could not put it on a US truck and ship it to canada we had to wait for them to send a truck to pick it up.

We don’t have a ‘free market’. We haven’t had one in a very long time. If it takes the USA imposing retaliatory trade measures including tariffs to get the attention of other Nations who’ve grown far too used to the USA being willing to underwrite other Nations and allow one-sided trade measures for decades that caused great harm to US business and workers …tough cookies.
If it were me we’d communicate a clear set of escalations to Canada. In two week increments start with selecting the most prohibitive/restrictive single trade barrier Canada has for any US export and impose that across the board on all Canadian products. Then I’d cut off their access to US capital and financial markets. Then I’d suspend Canadian Banking/Financial services operations in the USA.
Canada is far more dependent on imports than the USA. Tough for them but we are no longer the world’s bitch.

The Red Green show was the high point of Canadian exports to the US.
Last week Canadian Fir wall studs were over a dollar less than Georgia-Pacific pine wall studs. I am in south Georgia where the biggest crop is pine trees and I see log trucks daily. This week GP pine studs are still the same price but the fir studs are 60 cents more than the pine. Tariff fever?
FYI: Plywood cost at the warehouse is about $5 a sheet but I can drive an hour and pick up a pallet for $25 a sheet at the plywood factory.
