Yale lobbying spending surged amid Trump administration scrutiny of universities
As the administration of President Donald Trump cracked down on what it described as antisemitism and discriminatory admissions practices across the country, Yale University was one of a number of schools that dramatically increased the amount of money it spent on lobbyists in Washington, D.C.
Some is likely related to the university’s ongoing fight with the Department of Education, which has come to a head in recent weeks. The university is reportedly considering a settlement with the administration, a proposal that has been met with a sharp rebuke by students, professors and alumni.
In 2025, the school spent over $1.7 million on lobbyists, more than tripling the median amount the school spent between 1999 and 2024 of about $530,000, according to federal lobbying records. The university regularly lobbies Congress on issues related to research spending, records from prior years show.
During the first year of Trump’s second term in office, Yale expanded its lobbying efforts by adding two firms to its own in-house lobbyist, Richard Jacob. One of the firms, Akin Gump Strauss Hauer and Feld, said in its disclosure that it was lobbying on issues related to the administration’s efforts.
