White House Report Details the Wokeification of the Smithsonian American History Museum
“Not all Americans follow academic theories or curatorial fashions, but they do understand when a revered public institution has traded settled truths and basic history for political activism and division.”
Left to their own devices, the radical left will infect everything it touches with wokeism, something the Trump administration further exposed early on in its second term by, for example, taking a closer look at where USAID’s taxpayer money was going.
And there was plenty more where that came from, as Legal Insurrection extensively documented:
- Report: Biden-Harris Admin Funded Anti-Netanyahu NGOs With Taxpayer Dollars
- Biden Team Pumped $100 Billion Into NGOs, Green Energy Scams After Trump Win
- Trump Claws Back $4 Billion That Was Headed to Ludicrous UN Climate Fund
- Trump Draining Pool Of Money From Which Leftist Activists Drink
- Politico, New York Times, BBC Received Government Funds
Another way the anti-Americanism is coming under the federal microscope is by way of an Executive Order issued by President Trump in March 2025 on “Restoring Truth and Sanity to American History,” where it was noted that “museums in our Nation’s capital should be places where individuals go to learn — not to be subjected to ideological indoctrination or divisive narratives that distort our shared history.”
In a section on “Saving Our Smithsonian,” here is what was put in place:
The Vice President, in consultation with the Assistant to the President for Domestic Policy and the Special Assistant to the President and Senior Associate Staff Secretary, Lindsey Halligan, Esq., shall work to effectuate the policies of this order through his role on the Smithsonian Board of Regents with respect to the Smithsonian Institution and its museums, education and research centers, and the National Zoo, including by seeking to remove improper ideology from such properties, and shall recommend to the President any additional actions necessary to fully effectuate such policies.
A few months later, Trump ordered a comprehensive review of all Smithsonian museums ahead of America 250 festivities.
On July 4th, the White House’s Domestic Policy Council issued a detailed, 162-page PDF report documenting the wokeification of the Smithsonian National Museum of American History (NMAH). They held nothing back.
"A sweeping new White House report concluded that the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of American History (NMAH) has become a taxpayer-backed institution of 'ideological capture' and 'extreme political activism.'"https://t.co/foAsSoPoaB
— Karoline Leavitt (@PressSec) July 6, 2026
Here were their key findings:
- NMAH Fails to Substantively Present America’s Founders and Founding
- NMAH Has “Problematized” the 250th Anniversary of America’s Founding
- NMAH Removed “American History” from Its Mission Statement to “Get Out of the ‘America First’ Mentality”
- NMAH Has Abandoned Historical Scholarship for Political Activism
New report outlines the deep ideological capture of the Smithsonian in DC.
Politicizing American history to weaponize it in service of leftist activism. Not surprised they did this, but good to see it getting exposed. https://t.co/2yav7hlsN1 pic.twitter.com/Q7yJ6fthiq

They also accused them of “anti-white,” “illegal alien,” and “transgender activism,” and concluded there had been “ideological capture at the museum.”
The serious concerns raised in this report are not about a few exhibits or a few controversial labels. They concern whether America’s premier history museum still presents America as a coherent nation and heritage worth teaching with gratitude and honesty. The Museum can broaden the story without dissolving the story. It can and should acknowledge slavery, injustice, mistreatment of Native peoples, and other grave wrongs without encouraging citizens to view their country mainly through suspicion, resentment, and division. But that is not what the National Museum of American History is doing. As it stands today, it would benefit most Americans, especially parents bringing their children for a tour, if the Smithsonian’s flagship history museum had a label at every entrance that reads: “Warning: the exhibits in this museum were prepared by people who don’t want you to love your country.”
The findings of this report matter beyond the museum world. Not all Americans follow academic theories or curatorial fashions, but they do understand when a revered public institution has traded settled truths and basic history for political activism and division. They do notice when the heroes, principles, and events that formed the country are pushed to the margins. They notice when their children are introduced to inappropriate sexual and ideological content under the guise of civic education. And they object when their children and grandchildren are being indoctrinated to regard their country primarily as a source of oppression and unresolved grievance.
The Rapid Response X account shared some of the other findings from the report:
The museum also featured video clips of drag queens, images of nude women, and a magazine promoting "female masturbation."
It's sick, explicit content pushed on visitors of all ages at an *American history* museum.

They reframed America’s founding as a story of pure evil:
— Christopher Columbus = "murderer," "slaver," and "thief"
— Christian Pilgrims = "colonizers"
— Thanksgiving = a "National Day of Mourning"
They want you to feel shame for being American.
— Rapid Response 47 (@RapidResponse47) July 7, 2026
Their endorsed "toolkit" for museum professionals listed "rational thinking" and "hard work" as traits of "White Supremacy Culture."
Anti-White racism taught as official museum guidance.

This is just a sample; the full 162-page report lays out the entire Radical Left ideological capture of the Smithsonian — which the Trump Administration is rightfully correcting.

There was literally a Bolshevik takeover of the Smithsonian.

Naturally, the Usual Suspects on the left and in the media were none too pleased, and they, too, were called out:
Seems that the Report touched a nerve in the very people who have destroyed academia and captured every institution they touch, including the Smithsonian. https://t.co/JadHiK2DGB

This is essentially proof the report is correct. Last time I went to the American History museum with my kids, I was offended by the obvious politicization of so many captions. https://t.co/7PVczRMJqy
— Mark Hemingway (@Heminator) July 9, 2026
Translation: The bastion of leftwing thought that is academia is upset with the Trump White House for noticing the Smithsonian cares more about pushing social justice than real US history. https://t.co/15pbkjwj8s

"Inmates denounce a report detailing how they run the asylum." https://t.co/J7PkA6gbQb
— John Cohen (@realJohnCohen) July 8, 2026
There was also fretting about what may come next:
Current and former members of the Smithsonian Board of Regents tell NBC News they are anticipating this is not the end of the White House pressure campaign to reshape the museum’s presentations, which has been a focus in Trump’s second term. https://t.co/2vS9aCJWxk

Good. Bring it on. As the saying goes, sunlight is the best disinfectant.

I went to Dc 9 years ago and it was full of white man bad at every stop I made including Arlington Cemetery and Lincoln Theatre
I was disgusted
The problem lies with not enough conservative students entering, let alone graduating, from history & social science curricula. The Left has taken them over, it is only to be expected that major institutions like the Smithsonian will be run by indoctrinated leftist curators.
The problem is that conservative students have been driven out by their professors and subsequently their peers for a several (college degree) generations.
. “The nail that sticks up gets hammered down”.
Subsequently the schools have turned into self-sustaining left leaning cultures. The professors select their successors from the favorite pupils.
Exactly. Which then begs the point of what to do with the rot in the university system?
The question, on all fronts, will not be an easy one to solve for conservatives.
Close the schools. Fire the staffs. Raze the buildings. Plow the land. Plant corn.
Even the Ivy League cannot get students who know how to read:
https://thefederalist.com/2026/07/10/increasing-number-of-ivy-league-students-cant-even-read-so-lets-stop-calling-them-elite/
Hopefully the trend to private and home schooled youngsters continues to increase. Otherwise we are doomed, I fear.
Yawn, this is the same joint that was promoting ‘being on time’ as ‘whiteness’ (or some such inane BS) years ago, and NOTHING has happened.
Wake me up when the sick puppies… the individual people… at the Smithsonian, and other govt entities, are FIRED and thrown out on the street in disgrace for this crap. Also maybe some concerned citizens beat the living sh*t out of them until they learn to STFU with their insane BS. They are intentionally corrupting the minds of our children and destroying our history, a fundamental step in the collectivist takeover of our culture. This is cultural warfare and it’s time we got serious about fighting back.
Until then it’s just cockroaches scurrying when the light it turned on, certain to come back out in the near future to crap on the counter tops again soon..
More like a pit of vipers. Of the woke, by the woke, for the woke. The irony is that everything they rail against has given them a good life…better then their envisioned utopia. It’s not an argument about the glass being half empty or half full….they hate and what to throw away the glass. “Grateful” isn’t in their vocabulary. Ignorance is strength…..
Indeed. A full year writing a term paper compiling all the things we already knew were wrong.
NOW — what is Trump going to do about it and how soon? Or are we better off organizing a platoon of patriot arsonists so we can get moving on rebuilding America?
The Smithsonian is a disgrace.. Just one example is their claim that the slave laborers were involved in the construction of the Washington Monument. Absolutely no evidence to actually support that claim. In fact, all facts suggest otherwise, it was originally a private project sponsored by prominent figures opposed to slavery and was completed after the Civil War, that little effort that put. an end to the democrats’ peculiar institution. And this nonsense lie has even found its way into a garbage Spider-man movie, ensuring it thoroughly corrupts young minds.
Just fire all the bastards even remotely tied to this and then cancel all grants to history departments at college and university, They are free to spout their drivel but we don’t have to subsidize it.
Do I recall that the Smithsonian enjoys NGO status similar to the Fed: the government funds them, but they are not part of the government?
The Smithsonian Institution is a government entity. It was established by the federal government in 1846 as an independent federal trust instrumentality, meaning it operates separately from the three branches of government while still being a part of the federal system
I’m not at all sure what that means. Sounds like a contradiction to me.
2/3 of it’s 1.2B budget is federal appropriations.
The head is a black male historian whose field of study is….. wait for it… Black History!!! Color me surprised, Not. Appointed or elected or whatever in 2019.
Seriously, did anyone think that the communists were going to skip over the Smithsonian on its Long March?
