Victor Davis Hanson Ties Education and Immigration to Rise of the DSA
“I think the whole process is kind of a perfect storm”
Victor Davis Hanson of the Hoover Institution appeared on FOX News with Laura Ingraham this week and commented on the seemingly sudden rise of the DSA, which he describes as a perfect storm. He focuses on what our education system has become, ideologically speaking, and the rapid rise in immigration in recent years.
Laura begins by asking him about Somali flags flying in American cities. Hanson uses that as a springboard to examine a much bigger picture.

LAURA INGRAHAM: Our next guest is a patriot himself, Victor Davis Hanson, Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution. Victor, I want you to weigh in on this Somali flag raising this happening across the country, I’ve never seen anything like this. Perhaps it’s been going on for years, and I just didn’t notice, especially on our 250th. What would John Adams think?
VICTOR DAVIS HANSON, SENIOR FELLOW, HOOVER INSTITUTION: I don’t think he’d be too happy. I think it’s a reaction against the Trump administration when they uncovered this massive Somali welfare fraud in Minnesota, and I think the Left seems to want to champion that community and absolve them of any culpability, even though many of Americans were involved, second, third generation, excusing them, but I think the whole process is kind of a perfect storm, Laura.
We’ve had 50 years in the university where all we hear is a melodrama of how bad we were at our creation, our founding. We got worse during our maturity, and now we’re really bad, and that goes all the way down to K through 12. And then the university really, you know, they racked up 1.7 trillion in student loans, they triple the rate of inflation. They have these kind of non — they’re not really degrees, sociology dash studies, and so they, they get all these kids in debt, and then they have these worthless degrees, and they have delusions of grandeur, and so they’re very susceptible to socialism.
We never had 53 million immigrants, and we never had 16 percent of the population, and this came at a time when we do not believe in the melting pot, acculturation, assimilation, integration, and we have people coming mostly from the third world now, and they’re poor, and they come here, and the Democratic Party welcomes them, and saying, you’re the other, or you qualify for DEI, and as long as you agree with our negative appraisal of our own country, there’s a lot of repertory advantages, affirmative action scholarships for you, and they buy into that very easily, and we don’t make any effort with civic education anymore.

While I think all of Hanson’s points here are sound, I think higher education is the big one. People in the DSA talk like campus activists. They share the same views on virtually everything. It’s as if the Students for Justice in Palestine chapter at Columbia University is now running for office everywhere.

I firmly believe that we will be taking up arms soon.
The day I heard it was “impolite” to refer to America as a “Melting Pot” anymore, and that I should now regard it as some asinine salad recipe, I swore off gormless political vegetables and became a metallovore.
Anytime I encounter VDH I stop and read/listen to what he has to say. I think because of his expertise in the classics and military history he’s an excellent reminder that there’s nothing new under the sun and that mankind are a messy lot, to say the least.
I’d group VHD together with Clarence Thomas and Thomas Sowell as the great thinkers of our day.
As to Somalis in the United States, zero is too high a number. Somalia is everything the USA isn’t, and should never become. A thoroughly wretched place filled with thoroughly wretched people.
Ayan Hirsi Ali’s breakdown of Somali culture was all I needed to hear. They are incompatible with our system of governance.

Joe McCarthy was publicly vilified for being exactly right.
He is right. In the past with the Italians, Irish, Germans and whoever. We kept them in someplace like Ellis Island. They were checked for disease, they asked them about why they were coming here. The immigrants learned english and got jobs. They put their kids in our schools and learned our history and they became Americans. Now it is almost like we encourage them to just be Somalis living in America, not someone escaping a dumpster fire of a country. Did you know that large parts of the citizenship exam can be done in your native language? The first requirement used to be learn English. We need to go back to making these people Americans. Nothing wrong with immigrants who become American, speak English, get a job, But when you stay a Somali (or any other nationality), don’t learn English, and live off welfare or fraud there is a problem.
