Trump Admin Won’t Renew Trade With Canada, Mexico in Its Current Form
An official told Fox Business that Trump wants “separate deals with Canada and Mexico that last up to 10 years.”
U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer confirmed that the Trump administration will not renew the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) trade agreement in its current form after a joint review.
The USMCA replaced NAFTA during President Donald Trump’s first term.
“The United States will continue to engage with Mexico and Canada to address the Agreement’s shortcomings and our trade deficits with these countries,” announced Greer. “However, the Agreement remains in force pending resolution of these issues or until the Agreement’s termination.”
Greer said the administration “will meet with Mexico the week of July 20 for a third round of bilateral negotiations related to the USMCA joint review.”

The relationship between Trump and the two countries has soured over tariffs:
Trump’s “primary” issue with USMCA centers on America’s trade deficits with the two trading partners, according to the official.
The official added that Trump “has already changed the nature of the US-Canada-Mexico trading relationship” prior to Wednesday’s deadline through his tariffs. “So we have already seen USMCA, to some degree, to some degree subordinated by the president’s robust trade policy and adjustments of policies.”
The latest trade data shows that “Canada and Mexico were the two largest export markets for U.S.-made goods, while Mexico was the largest source of U.S. imports and Canada ranked third in that category.”

A friend has a five acre walnut orchard along the north-south Canadian-NorCal rail line. The most noticeable freight being finished wood products all heading south. Everyday. Flat car after flat car.
The last time I was in Canada we were touring the western Vancouver Island head lands (excellent gravel roads.) The logging was pretty extensive – the logging trucks in use were the analog of those huge coal mining vehicles but outfitted for hauling pine/fir.. (8ft wheels).
We also saw huge log boom rafts heading for mills at Port Hardy.
There’s no way that that sort of logging (heavy industry) would be allowed in Washington, Montana, Oregon, California etc.
Funny how that works, eh?
And Canada is supposed to be way greener than we are.

What a coincidence. That’s exactly the same width as the Fourth-Amendment-Free Zone in the USA. All the rest is America.
Drive north of Reno and you’re in another universe. The Great Basin is unpopulated. Far northeast California is the same. Eastern Oregon.
Vast areas America are open spaces with very few people.

Just wait until a Canadian judge issues an injunction and some random district judge in New Mexico upholds it.
Don’t expect any changes soon though, this trade agreement can remain in place as is for another decade yet – despite not signing off on renewing it.
Trump has it figured out though on the way forward – the US will get much better deals with two bi-lateral deals than with one tripartite deal.
USMCA is vastly superior to NAFTA, but we can do better yet.
American manufacturing increased after both trade deals were made and we manufacture incomparably more than ever before. What is imported isn’t traded in some sort of rare irreplaceable material and it isn’t a national disaster it is American citizens purchasing things ranging from wood to syrup cheaply.
What the tariffs are meant to do explicitly is increase the prices.
Why?
Do we need fewer forests? Making up for that lumber means deforestation for devastating ecological consequences.
This is a horrible economic policy, and the Democrats are capitalizing on Americans frustration with high prices and the same Biden issues continuing unabated.
Trump was elected to lower prices and make a booming economy.
Right now nationwide rent is going up.
Why?
Pittsburgh is doing just fine as a tech city.
The industrial centers of America are not leaving the south for the north, and they didn’t leave the north because of foreign competition they left the north because the south has sound economic policies.
If you think New York or Detroit will re-industrialize…..do you have a brain?
Who the hell is investing in New York? Socialism? Check. High taxes? Check. Pop that feels entitled to steal from you? Check. I could go on but nobody is building a plant in New York.
Detroit? You mean you like having employees shot every weekend, legalized theft from you from no enforcement of laws high taxes and high regulations and corruption?
It would be better to focus on growing the American economy. Dollar spent bringing in Canadian wood means more wood and cheaper wood meaning more economic activity.
We do not have to rely on hypothetical models made by Peter Retardo because the trade deficit has not hurt America one bit far from it the American economy got stronger and stronger.
It is time to start keeping affordability promises instead of thinking it is the job of the U.S. Federal Government to rebuild a Ford Plant in Detroit that hasn’t existed since the second world war because sound southern economic policies somehow outcompeted Detroit.
You know we have both syrup in New England and many areas with viable forestry products/timber production in the USA? In the Southeast much of the played out cotton fields were planted with long leaf pines. Timber/forestry is very much a sustainable resource when using good stewardship practices. As the timber grows the land can be leased for hunting and the pine needles can be harvested for sale as mulch. Takes about 30 years to hit ‘maturity’ with a ten inch diameter (telephone pole) and they can live hundreds of years. There’s no ‘clear cutting’ of entire forests anymore b/c it doesn’t make sense economically as a productive forestry practice. You need a mix of maturities/age of trees to sustain income stream year after year. Clear cutting is like slaughtering all your laying hens at once. Then there’s the Pacific Northwest. Eco terrorists and environmental whackos and over regulation wrecked their thriving timber industry. Lots of viable timber in Maine.
Rent is high, so are home prices. Some of it is social change. Where age of marriage increased above 30 then those two younger adults are living separate in different apartments longer instead of marrying and living together in a single home/apartment. Most of it is goofy regulation, NIMBY ‘don’t build any homes/apartments near me’, rent control/tenant rights insanity that discourage new apartments to rent. Some is large investors buying up housing stock and renting them instead of selling and sometimes withholding them from the rental market to maintain higher prices for existing stock. All those impact supply reducing availability which drives prices higher b/c demand is unmet. Solutions will be resisted by those who benefit from current system.
In the short term if you remove a large portion of the wood supply the price of wood goes up or you have to make up for it by increased cutting.
We aren’t going to do increased cutting because it is an ecological catastrophe that makes little economic sense.
Therefore the price goes up.
Our side correctly made a big deal about it and was furious when Biden drove up the price of wood.

Wood is used for a wide variety of things ranging from important construction projects, to etsy shops, to just someone having fun on the weekend trying out carpentry.
All of the above means more economic activity

Transaction is called trade deficit however because it is an American purchasing a Canadian product.
Tariffs are what put Trump underwater, and he has been underwater since liberation day.
If New York wants to compete with South Carolina it could stop voting to be a hellscape, I do not want the American people to live worst lives or introduce the Democrats to absolute power in the name of a delusion that somehow New York New York will be or should be a capital of industrialization. It is a Democrat run city and in our Republic you get what you voted for and they voted literal socialism in after decades of leftist Democrats.
