“Anti-DEI policies have also set the stage for increased censorship and punitive action taken against those who dare to speak up. And this is especially the case for those of us who decide to speak out against the racism for Palestinians and genocide in Gaza”

Professors push ‘antiracism’ therapy to train ‘white allies’ at psychology conference

Professors at the annual American Psychological Association conference advocated for “antiracism” in therapy to train “white allies,” according to a video released by watchdog group Accuracy in Media Monday.

Speaking on stage to an audience, Yara Mekawi, an assistant professor at the University of Louisville in Kentucky, said there are “ways for white allies to speak up” about “racial injustice” while “staying in their lane.”

She advocated for psychologists to use “motivational interviewing to help white allies overcome their ambivalence in their antiracism commitment.”

She noted that psychologists have outlined these strategies in a book called “Beyond Fragility.”

Professor Mekawi “is the director of the Challenging Ongoing Legacies Of Racism (COLOR) lab,” according to her biography on the University of Louisville’s website.

Another speaker, Natalie Watson-Singleton, associate professor of psychology at Spelman College in Georgia, condemned anti-DEI policies and blamed them for “censorship.”

“Anti-DEI policies have also set the stage for increased censorship and punitive action taken against those who dare to speak up. And this is especially the case for those of us who decide to speak out against the racism for Palestinians and genocide in Gaza,” she said.

“We’ve even seen the language of antisemitism, the language of our antiracism movement, taken and weaponized to reify and maintain racism, colonialism, and widespread oppression,” the professor said.

She defined “antiracism” as “intentional and sustained behaviors that work to disrupt racism, reduce harm, and redistribute power individually, culturally, and systemically.”

Watson-Singleton said the “main goal is to help white individuals become better allies.”

She also described an APA training for “white allies” called “Step Up and Step Back” where white attendees learned how to advocate for antiracism without centering themselves.

Finally, the professor advocated for psychologists to use different therapy methods, such as cognitive behavioral therapy and mindfulness, to “help white allies overcome the various barriers that are part of their allyship journey.”

She said “white allies” need to be taught “how to regulate the anxiety that gets activated when their white racial identity is brought to the fore.”

White ‘allies’ must demonstrate they are anti-racist?

In other words, whites are assumed guilty of racism until proven otherwise?

If you’re white, you’re always guilty of racism.

The expiation never ends.

It would be difficult to find a group of more frustrated and angry and depressed people than a bunch of psychology professors.
