Nicaragua President Daniel Ortega: ‘There Will Never be Elections Here Again’
“Parties put in place by the Yankees, put in place by the Somoza regime, coming back to power — that story is over.”
President Daniel Ortega of Nicaragua has abolished elections in the country to keep control with his wife, Rosario Murillo, the co-president.

Ortega said in a speech against America:
There won’t be any more elections here. There won’t be any more elections for them to try to seize the government, to seize power.
And we are going to work with the national assemblies and the corresponding organizations on the laws because laws need to be made.
Let them build a wall, a blockade against the coup plotters, the traitors and no matter how much money the Yankees give them, they won’t be able to.
“Parties put in place by the Yankees, put in place by the Somoza regime, coming back to power — that story is over,” Ortega added.
In February, America sanctioned the Ortega dictatorship and its agents for “enforcing its repression of the Nicaraguan people.”
“The Trump Administration is acting once again to hold Nicaraguan dictators Rosario María Murillo Zambrana and Daniel Ortega Saavedra and their enablers to account,” said Tommy Pigott, the State Department principal spokesperson. “The United States is imposing sanctions on five senior Nicaraguan officials who incited regional instability through the dictatorship’s consolidation of power and ongoing abuses against the Nicaraguan people.”
This is what communism gives you:
Since 2018, the Murillo-Ortega dictatorship has violently repressed peaceful protests, and unjustly detained, tortured, and killed political opponents. This illegitimate family dynasty has also persecuted Catholic clergy and has opted to silence and banish independent media and civil society organizations. The dictatorship rewrote Nicaragua’s constitution to ensure government institutions punish political opponents and allow the arbitrary monitoring and control of telecommunications systems. The dictatorship has committed systemic labor abuses and uses security structures to monitor and silence anyone perceived to threaten their grip on power. The individuals sanctioned today lead government agencies responsible for these acts of repression.
Ortega gave the speech during a ceremony to commemorate the 1979 Sandinista revolution, which overthrew the U.S.-supported dictator Anastasio Somoza.
Ortega first took control of Nicaragua in 1979 after the revolution and remained in power until 1990.
Violeta Chamorro defeated Ortega in 1990. He lost again in 1996 and 2001.
But Ortega won the 2006 general election and has controlled the country ever since. From The Associated Press:
Since mass protests in 2018, which led to a bloody government crackdown that killed hundreds, Ortega and his wife and co-President Rosario Murillo have been holding on to power.
Ortega declared himself the winner of the 2021 election — a vote widely viewed as illegitimate by the international community — after jailing all the candidates who could have possibly beaten him. The U.S. does not recognize Ortega’s presidency.

So, pretty much a blueprint for our “Democrat Socialists”.
I would amend that to being a blueprint for our DemoncRats.
Exactly they must look on him fondly as another supreme dictator whose system that wish to emulate.
All the while bleating that the discontinuation of elections is an immediate threat from Republicans like Bush and Trump.
Though many Republicans bleated exactly the same thing about 0bama and Biden. I can’t recall an time since the turn of the century that I wasn’t hearing someone earnestly tell me that the president of the day was going to declare martial law and cancel the coming election. Bush was going to do it in 2004 and again in 2008, 0bama was sure to do it in 2012 and 2016, Trump was absolutely certain to do it in 2020, and there was no question that Biden would do it in 2024. This seems to be a common disease that spreads on both sides of the crazynet, and not merely a symptom of TDS.
You seem to know a lot of really stupid people.
You know many of the same stupid Republicans as I do, since they infest this forum. It was right here that I was assured, by several people that 0bama or Biden was going to cancel the upcoming presidential election.
The stupid Democrats who told me the same thing during Republican admins are not people you know.
Cool. I’d suggest Mr Noriega upgrade his Nation’s radar, be sure to lock his bedroom door and pay very close attention to the end phase of military operations against Iranian regime when more forces will become available to the USA for missions elsewhere …especially within our hemisphere as we reassert our hegemony.
Ortega.
Manuel Noriega was Panama.
Tomato/Tomato …but seriously good catch.
I was reminded by this article that when I was very young I was very much hyped up/into Planet of the Apes; movies, graphic novel, lunchbox even LP. Unfortunately that interest coincided with the various revolutionary groups rise in Latin America. So I’d hear on the radio/TV news that ‘guerrilla fighters’ had captured the city of X … and it freaked me out, especially since none of the grown ups seemed nearly as concerned as they should be that armed ‘gorilla fighters’ (which is what I imagined) were winning.
Get ready to meet Fidel, Danny.
Dems completely agree with him, but believe he’s foolish for saying it out loud while holding a microphone.
He’s still a Democrat hero.
You can vote in communism…
But you have to shoot your way out of it!
One man, one vote, one time
If the US had actually supported Somoza when he needed it, Ortega would probably have been unable to overthrow him. But Jimmy Carter decided that Somoza was too icky, so he withdrew US support and allowed the communist takeover to happen, just as he did in Iran, refusing to support the Shah and allowing the mullahs to take over.
So many of our problems today are rooted in Jimmy Carters feckless foreign policy.
This is what happens when a POTUS puts the welfare of the citizens of foreign countries ahead of the interests of America and Americans. Supporting Somoza might have made us look bad, but look where not supporting him has landed the people of Nicaragua. This makes us look good? Makes us more secure? Keeps a potential threat to us from Central America at bay?
I’m sure the No Kings protests on college campuses will break out any minute.
For one thousand, who said, “There will never be elections here again?”
a. Cuban Fidel Castro
b. Nicaraguan Daniel Ortega
c. Democrat Socialists of America
d. All of the above
Sounds like we need to stage another ‘arrest’. Let’s see how good Mr. Ortega’s Cuban bodyguards are.
When you read about Somoza’s ‘dictatorship’, you suddenly realize that someone’s trying really hard to make him look like a dictator.
Almost as if the only ‘dictator’ thing he was doing is getting in the way of the communist takeover of South and Central America.
I propose President Trump take Nicaragua right after he’s done with Cuba.
The Nicaraguan government under President Daniel Ortega has intensified repression against the Catholic Church and the Jesuits since 2023, leading to expulsions, asset confiscations, and harassment, but unlike in El Salvador, no Jesuit priests have been confirmed killed in the country, yet.
The 2018 protests resulted in more than 300 deaths, with Jesuit institutions providing sanctuary to protesters.
In August 2023, the Ortega regime banned the Jesuit order and confiscated all their assets, including the Universidad Centroamericana (UCA) in Managua.
So now no elections! Danny better think of changing compounds. Never know when the US Army Rangers might knock on your door
Aren’t the Jesuits in Latin America all commies? Wasn’t Ortega a Jesuit himself? Why did he turn on them? Intra-commie fight over whether Stalin would beat up Mao or the reverse?
Democrats find themselves Green With Envy
Never is a long time. He’s 80 and his bitch of a wife is 75. He may not live to see elections but they will occur,
I remember Nicaragua of that period. I remember that the pop sound of a small caliber pistol would shut him up for good.
