Georgetown Offers ‘Gender-Inclusive’ Housing for Trans Students

Georgetown offers trans housing, gender care, identity-focused courses
Despite being a Catholic institution, Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., provides transgender-identifying students with university-supported housing options, “gender-affirming care” resources, and identity-based programming while also offering academic programs focused on gender, race, and social justice.
The university’s LGBTQ Resource Center states that it supports students “through resources, outreach, advocacy, and programming” during their time at Georgetown. The center also maintains a web page dedicated to “Resources for Transgender and Non-Binary Students,” which includes guidance on adding pronouns to university systems and changing a student’s name across campus.
The page directs students to Georgetown’s Gender-Inclusive Housing program, which provides housing accommodations for students who identify as transgender, non-binary, or gender-nonconforming.
Georgetown also provides students with information about obtaining “gender-affirming health care” through the LGBTQ Resource Center. The university’s “Gender-Affirming Care & Resources” web page advertises a “Queer Support Space,” a “Trans and Non-Binary Support Space,” and free chest binders for students.
The university additionally informs students that Washington, D.C. Medicaid covers treatments deemed medically necessary for transgender patients, including hormone therapy and some surgeries.
The resource page also links students to outside organizations, including a legal advocacy group serving “transgender Americans” and a reporting system for students to report possible bias-related incidents or hate crimes.
Beyond student services, Georgetown incorporates identity-focused coursework into its academic offerings.
The university offers a major in Women’s and Gender Studies with four concentrations, including Sexuality Studies and Social Justice and Violence.
