Biden Homeland Security Secretary Mayorkas to Join Harvard as Fellow

Harvard reportedly taps ex-Biden border chief Mayorkas for resident fellowship

Former Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas is expected to join Harvard University’s Institute of Politics in Cambridge, Massachusetts, as a resident fellow this fall, bringing one of the Biden administration’s most controversial officials to mentor students.

Mayorkas would be joining the institute’s incoming fellowship class.

Harvard did not deny the July 1 report, telling The Harvard Crimson that the institute will announce its bipartisan slate of fellows later this summer.

Resident fellows lead student study groups, hold office hours, and mentor undergraduates. Mayorkas served as Homeland Security secretary from 2021 to 2025, when the administration faced sustained criticism over its handling of the U.S.-Mexico border amid record illegal immigration.

In February 2024, the House impeached Mayorkas over his handling of border enforcement, making him the first cabinet secretary to be impeached since 1857.

The Senate later dismissed the articles without a trial.

Mayorkas previously led U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, overseeing implementation of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program before serving as deputy homeland security secretary.
