Netanyahu: Israel to Hold South Lebanon Buffer Zone Until Hezbollah Terror Threat Cleared

The IDF will remain in southern Lebanon “as long as Israel’s security needs demand it.”

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced Thursday that Israel will maintain its military presence in southern Lebanon as long as the Iranian-backed Hezbollah terrorist group poses a threat.

“We will restore security and prosperity to the communities of the North. This requires maintaining the security zone in southern Lebanon; it requires that we do not withdraw from there as long as Israel’s security needs demand it,” Prime Minister Netanyahu said at a public event near Jerusalem.

The Israeli Prime Minister lauded the success of the joint U.S.-Israel strike, saying “we achieved tremendous accomplishments against the Axis of Evil of Iran and its proxies.” As part of the military operation, “we also dismantled the Axis of Evil, the strangling noose that Iran tried to create around us,” Prime Minister Netanyahu said. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) deployed in Lebanon “fended off the threat of a ground invasion from our communities and shattered Hezbollah’s missile power,” he noted.

The statement comes a day after the U.S. and Iran signed an initial agreement, widely reported as the 14-point memorandum of understanding (MOU), that calls for an “immediate and permanent termination” of Israeli counter-terrorism operations and withdrawal from Hezbollah-controlled southern Lebanon. The Jerusalem Post, on Thursday, reported that “tensions escalated between Jerusalem and Washington over a US-Iran agreement that calls for an end to hostilities in Lebanon and a full Israeli withdrawal from Lebanese territory.”

Media reports suggest that Israel is under mounting diplomatic pressure from the U.S. and European powers to submit to Tehran’s dictates. “Britain’s international development minister Jenny Chapman calls for Israel to withdraw from southern Lebanon,” The Times of Israel reported Thursday.

President Trump aired his differences with Israel on Wednesday, questioning the scale of its military retaliation against Hezbollah terrorists. “We have a little dispute over Lebanon,” he told reporters at the G7 Summit in France. “I say, ‘You can do a little softer touch, Bibi. You don’t have to knock down a building every time somebody walks into it that’s from Hezbollah.’”

The IDF released a map Thursday showing Israeli troop positions in southern Lebanon’s Security Zone. “Due to operational requirements, the IDF is deployed in the Security Zone, approximately 10 kilometers inside Lebanese territory,” the military disclosed in a statement Thursday. “IDF soldiers are stationed in the designated area of operation in southern Lebanon, and will continue to remove threats and strengthen the defense of Israel’s northern residents.”

Hezbollah renews rocket attacks on IDF troops

On Thursday afternoon, Hezbollah renewed its attack on IDF troops in southern Lebanon. “A short while ago, the Israeli Air Force intercepted several rockets launched toward IDF soldiers operating in southern Lebanon. Several additional rockets fell adjacent to the soldiers,” the military announced. “No injuries were reported.”

On Wednesday night, the IDF struck a Hezbollah launcher used for firing rockets toward Israel. “A few minutes after the Hezbollah terrorist organization launched rockets toward IDF soldiers, the Israeli Air Force struck the launcher, which was loaded and ready to fire additional rockets,” the military revealed. “As a result of the strike, additional rockets were launched from the launcher and fell in open areas in southern Lebanon.”

I wonder if Trump would have a different opinion if Hezbollah was firing rockets at Mar Lago?

Lebanon and the UN were supposed to guarantee the buffer zone in South Lebanon. They failed. Completely. Israel had to move in to protect its Northern citizens. Now they should move out leaving a vacuum?

Trump, IMO, does not possess the ruthless mentality or the toleration for widespread death/destruction (that a sustained military conflict would entail) to match the braggadocious rhetoric he routinely employs. The flipside of ‘never Trump’ is ‘always Trump’ (just as dangerously flawed IMO) and those are the same folks telling us that Trump uses hyperbole to effectively ‘persuade and communicate’, that specifics don’t matter …ok but it would be nice to get follow through b/c the absence of follow through on publicly stated intentions/goals is at best a bit deceptive and at worst gas lighting.

Israel has gotta/should do whatever is required to safeguard the safety/security of its Citizens. If that means Israel hitting Hezbollah over the head until they get tired or get bored that’s up to Israel to decide. Will the ‘international community’ and/or regional Nations complain? Sure, tough cookies. Those same complaining Nations could offer and deliver safety/security from Hezbollah if they chose to undertake the responsibility for it …but they won’t. Every Nation should ignore the ankle biting complaints and do what is necessary to protect their Citizens from those who seek to harm them. If that ruffles feathers and causes pearl clutching so be it.

Thank you for making the point about always Trump. I’ve been thinking there are two sides to TDS – the 2 you mentioned – always and never. Some people go apeshit crazy if you even question Trump. No criticize mind you. Question. It’s like How Dare you. They’re as nutzo and as dangerous as the democrats.

Mind you the two sides of the coin are not limited to Trump but can be applied to every politician in fact every public figure. You need to try and look at everyone with a bit of a jaundiced eye and call it like you see it, Blind loyalty is as dangerous as,,, no it’s more dangerous than blind hatred.

Stick to it BiBi.

I’m hoping this is “good cop / bad cop”.

Good; keep as much territory as is needed, to secure Israel’s and Israelis’ safety and security.

I have to say, I never thought I’d see the day when #47 is criticizing Netanyahu, for not using a “soft touch” against Muslim terrorists. This is just not a good look for him, at all, trying to defend this wretched and idiotic “deal,” by asking the one ally who is most affected by Muslim terrorism, to use restraint in retaliating against terrorist attacks.

Self defense above regional consideration? Absolutely

I am certain that Israel will continue to retaliate against any attacks against them by Hezbollah as they should.

I am even more certain that as long as Lebanon remains a majority Muslim population that Hezbollah will continue terrorist operations there.

The fuse was lit once Lebanon ceased being a Christian majority nation in the 70’s. Once a business and vacation haven Lebanon became and remains dangerous place mostly hostile to the ideals of Western civilization and Judeo/Christian values.

This MOU is starting to look like Munich 1938 redux — US deep sixes Israel; no need for Israeli involvement in negotiations.

Lebanon had been a majority Christian and western oriented country until Hezbolah and other Islamic terrorist groups moved in. Duly elected Christian political leaders were assassinated and Islamists took control of the country and it’s army. As a nation, Lebanon can not negotiate for itself or support any treaty or agreement not approved by the Islamist terrorists. It could not disarm or move Hezbolah terrorists from Southern Lebanon per UN policy. And UN troops that were placed in Lebanon to enforce a cease fire did nothing and then allowed Hezbolah to build military facilities next to UN positions. Israel cannot depend on the Lebanese government, the UN or Donald Trump to provide security from Islamist terrorists. Trump has failed to enforce its agreement with Hamas for Hamas to disarm in Gaza. So why would Iran follow any agreement or memorandum with Trump. Europe is about to go the way of Lebanon after allowing mass immigration of islamists into their countries. Will the USA face mass immigration of Christians and other minorities from Europe, seeking freedom from the Islamist caliphate?. Or is it now too late for the USA also!
