Jewish Groups Threaten to Sue Somerville, MA, Over Anti-Israel Boycott Ordinance
ADL and Brandeis Center Lawyers: “We urge the Council and City to reject the Ordinance. Should the Ordinance be enacted in its current form, our clients are prepared to pursue all available legal remedies to prevent its enforcement.”
Jewish legal groups are warning Somerville, Massachusetts, that they are prepared to sue the city if it enacts a proposed anti-Israel boycott ordinance.
The proposed “Ethical Procurement and Investment” ordinance introduced in the City Council on June 11 would prohibit the city from entering into contracts with and investing in entities engaged in “apartheid, genocide, unlawful military occupation, or conduct recognized to constitute systematic violation of international humanitarian law.”
Although the ordinance purports to prohibit all unethical procurement and investment, you know who the target is: the proposed law refers to “Israel’s apartheid, genocide, and illegal occupation of Palestine” in the whereas clauses; and it identifies only “Israel and Palestine” in the operative text as examples of entities with whom business would be forbidden under its terms.
Behind the ordinance is Somerville for Palestine (S4P), the local anti-Israel activist group that formed in the wake of the October 7 Hamas massacre. By January 2024, they scored their first victory: a Gaza ceasefire resolution, the first in Massachusetts. Next, they successfully campaigned for a nonbinding 2025 voter referendum directing the city to divest from companies doing business with Israel, the precursor to the ordinance that has now drawn a litigation threat from two major Jewish organizations.
In their joint letter sent June 18 on behalf of several Jewish citizens of Somerville, the Anti-Defamation League and the Brandeis Center urge city officials to reject the “flagrantly unconstitutional” proposed law. They argue the city’s proposal unlawfully intrudes on an area reserved exclusively to the federal government and that it runs afoul of federal laws that support Israel.
The ordinance would also violate the 14th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution and its Massachusetts counterpart, the letter says, pointing to evidence of antisemitic hostility at prior city council meetings on a similar measure—including a swastika displayed by a proponent, intimidation of Jewish attendees, and an incident in which one Jewish person was spat upon, and another required a police escort.
The groups argue that such evidence of animus bears directly on the ordinance’s constitutionality.
Somerville is the latest Massachusetts city to court a legal battle over an anti-Israel boycott ordinance. As we covered earlier this year, the cities of Medford and Northampton are both being sued over similar BDS-style measures. However, in those cities, the measures were challenged after they passed, whereas in Somerville, the legal warnings are arriving before the city council has voted to enact the measure.
In fact, those warnings came even earlier in Somerville. The city’s own law department has twice advised its councilors—in November 2024 and again in April 2026—that a BDS-style ordinance is “likely invalid.”
While the groups’ letter doesn’t explicitly say, “See you in court,” its message is clear: If the ordinance is enacted in its current form, the ADL and Brandeis Center are “prepared to pursue all available legal remedies to prevent its enforcement”—that would include a lawsuit like the ones playing out in Medford and Northampton. Only in Somerville, the city would be walking into court with its own attorneys already on record against the anti-Israel boycott ordinance they seek to uphold.

The Jews use to be the brightest
Always get a Jewish Dr
Did they become complacent?
Or have the numbers of Muslims in the last 5 yrs been so overwhelming
The Muslims have a plan and it ain’t Freedom!
Complacent – yes. Many of them.
They also became progressive.
There are larger number of muslims and they aren’t shy.
Red-Green alliance. Progressive taking muslim side.
It’s not fair to generalize and make sweeping statements, about “the Jews.” There are many conservative Jews in American society, including Professor Jacobson, as you know. There are still too many left-leaning American Jews, true, but, it’s important to make distinctions, here.
Fairness and factual accuracy demand that you be more precise in your language — “Dhimmi-crat Jews;” “leftist Jews;” etc.
And, hell — there are still to0 many Christians who are committed and staunch Dhimmi-crats, and, it’s their votes that actually matter in our elections, demographically and mathematically.
Clearly I know there are conservative Jewish persons
But the lack of successful major push back is astonishing
It’s shocking how the Muslims calculated 10/7 and Israel
Was left as the bad guy, for what? Fighting back?
Personally, I wish they had dropped some kind of bomb that would have destroyed both Garza and Iran
Forever
It’s just as fair and accurate to make sweeping generalizations about group X as it is about group Y or group Z. Sometimes those generalizations are inaccurate and/or used with malicious intent. Often generalizations are largely accurate. If some 60+ ‘white’ woman walks up to berate someone over their MAGA hat it is very fair to presume she is a Karen and an AWFL. If it was in a large metro then adding the U for ‘urban’ would be appropriate. Less certain would be whether she has a social science MA/PhD, is an ardent ‘feminist’, has a cute ‘in this house we believe’ yard sign, voted for Harris …though odds are she does.
Every group/tribe has both +/- stereotypes held by public perception that are based in some degree of historical truth, personal observation or anecdote. No group/tribe is special or exempt from this phenomenon.
This sounds like a blue vs blue dispute.
Islam is as loathsome as it is evil.
Pretending that Israel embarked on a genocidal campaign against Gaza is like saying that D-Day was not a righteous response to Hitler invading most of Europe.
Somerville is next to Cambridge, if you were not aware, so the radicals at Harvard are no doubt deeply embedded in this effort.
Not to far from MIT either.
Out of general principal, Somerville deserves to be sued, and often, and by someone who knows how.
Yes, I know how to spell principle.
Siri doesn’t.
In my house, when Siri hears “turn on the bedside lights”, it does just that. Along with some of the living room lights (varies day to day), and, about 20% of the time, the ceiling fan in the guest room.
Siri is NOT one of Apple’s better efforts.
Good please sue them and teach these assholes that their boycotts are illegal and discrminatory. Make them sweat it out in court and waste time & money until they learn to stop capitualing to stupid palestinian pressure groups. I;m sure the people of their city will be so happy to know how their tax dollars are being wasted on these legal battles instead of say city improvements. People need to pay more attention to their local politics this is where battles can be won with just simple engagement.
I admire the fighting spirit, but all Jews everywhere need to realize that the Communists have already relegated them to the outer darkness with the rest of the Deplorables. The irony is exquisite: secular lefty Jews forcibly lumped together with the Bible-thumping’ Christers they loved to hate.
And licking the Communists’ jackboots by pledging solidarity with “Palestine” will no longer save these lefty secular Jews from the Communist wrath to come.
Think how good your life would be if you could blame all your self induced problems on a group you have no knowledge of.
I hope your speaking of Muslims
I blame the lizard people.
They Live!
Suing the un-American government schools may result in something which looks like an accomplishment, but getting children out of that corrupt system is a better use of time, energy, and funds.
Not to mention voting down every single school bond issue on the ballot.
I lived in Somerville for a few years back in the 1990’s. Worst years of my life.
Even then it was mostly overrun with very recent immigrants, and the Americans there were as libtarded as could be. Sufferers from what Elon accurately describes as the Woke Mind Virus.
I grew up with one of the previous mayors: Joe Curtatone. Aside from being a worse than useless attorney who could find a way to lose even the simplest of cases, he was a baritone player. We called him Joe Quartertone because he was always off pitch.
He managed to get himself an invite to the WH during the Obama years. He really thought his political career was going to take off. But he was too stupid even for the Democrats. These days though, he’d be a veritable genius compared to the likes of AOC.
Great, now I’m remembering all kinds of crap from that period of my life that I had successfully blocked.
You’d think a bedroom community just outside a wealthy city like Boston would be a nice place. But, no. Not at all.
Outside of being the birthplace of Steve’s Ice Cream, Somerville has zero to recommend it.
Why “threaten”? Just do it.
Somerville, a leftist Cambridge “wannabe”.
It still amazes me that people could possibly be on the side of the “Palestinians” and against the Jews. After what Hamas did on October 7th 2023, aided by the Palestinians who didn’t lift a finger and instead cheered when they saw the poor tortured, raped, and murdered people brought back to Gaza by Hamas. Those people are actually hateful people and for those dimwits to support them is beyond the comprehension of any intelligent human beings.
