Death Toll Surges After Venezuela’s ‘Doublet’ Quakes; 50,000 Feared Missing

As I feared after my initial report, the back-to-back earthquakes that rocked Venezuela resulted in substantial loss of life and thousands of injuries.

As of Friday afternoon, the confirmed death toll had climbed to 920. There are estimates that more than 50,000 are missing or still buried beneath collapsed buildings.

Jorge Rodriguez, president of Venezuela’s National Assembly, said in a televised address Tuesday that the number of deaths from the successive earthquakes had risen to 920. He added that 3,360 people were injured and more than 4,000 were displaced. The death toll rose by more than 300 in just a few hours from the 589 announced earlier that morning by interim President Delcy Rodriguez.

“It has been determined that 1,423 buildings were damaged nationwide,” Rodriguez said. “Residential buildings, as well as hospital facilities and commercial stores, were destroyed en masse.” He added that more than 2 million rations of food had been distributed to directly support citizens affected by the earthquakes.

The United Nations estimates that more than 50,000 people are missing as a result of the earthquakes. Tom Fletcher, UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief, said in an interview with AFP on Tuesday, “With more than 50,000 people missing, searching through the building debris will be a vast undertaking.”

The U.S. is pledging millions in relief aid and sending a disaster response team as well as search-and-rescue teams.

Speaking to the press during his trip to the Gulf, Secretary of State Marco Rubio promised: “We have a whole-of-government response. It’ll be big; it’ll be fast; and it’ll be effective.”

The U.S. effort includes a commitment to allocate $150 million to faith-based aid groups like Samaritan’s Purse and Catholic Relief Services, and two United Nations agencies: the World Food Programme and the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.

In addition, the U.S. is deploying a Disaster Assistant Response Team and two search and rescue teams from Virginia and California to help with locating survivors. The Virginia team will include 80 people and 6 dogs. The California team includes 70 people and 6 dogs.

The administration has also tapped the Pentagon to help with getting U,S. government staff and critical supplies into the country, as some of the airport infrastructure in Venezuela has been damaged.

The Venezuela quakes appear to have occurred along the South American and Caribbean tectonic plates.

Maria Beatrice Magnani, a professor of seismology at Southern Methodist University, who mapped faults in Venezuela in the early 2000s, said the ruptures happened along a boundary between the South American and Caribbean tectonic plates, where the two are essentially sliding laterally past each other. In this area, the USGS estimates the Caribbean plate is moving eastward relative to the South American plate at a rate of about 20 millimeters per year (about three-quarters of an inch). The plates are also subject to compression — they’re being squeezed together as they move past each other.

Initial data indicates both of these earthquakes were strike-slip, Magnani said, meaning one plate lurched past the other along the boundary. But she added that much about how the quakes played out is still to be determined.

“It’s going to take some time to find a full history of the fault,” Magnani said. “It’s a very complex plate boundary.”

The seismic one-two punch, which seismologists call a “doublet, has earthquake-prone areas like Southern California on the alert.

Though less known to the general public, doublet earthquakes have long been studied by seismologists. Some have occurred in California, including in Imperial County and near Mammoth Mountain, as have big earthquakes followed by a substantial aftershock, as occurred in 1992. They prompted officials to issue an unprecedented public warning.

….In Southern California, researchers with the USGS simulated a hypothetical doublet quake scenario, in which 52 miles of the Newport-Inglewood fault — which runs along the Orange County coast and then through Long Beach, South L.A. — would rupture in a magnitude 7.25 earthquake, which would then be followed several hours later by a magnitude 7.05 earthquake on the Palos Verdes fault.

Doublets don’t necessarily need to stop at two earthquakes. There was a quadruplet quake sequence — all magnitude 6.3 quakes — in western Afghanistan in 2023. The first two temblors were separated by about four hours on Oct. 7, then followed by the additional quakes on Oct. 10 and Oct. 14. Many buildings collapsed, and 2,400 people died, according to scientists who detailed the quake sequence at an American Geophysical Union meeting in 2024.

Clearly, the scale of this disaster is immense, and with so many still missing, the death toll will undoubtedly climb.

But the rapid arrival of international aid, including U.S. rescue teams, offers a measure of hope. In the critical hours ahead, much depends on the speed and effectiveness of these efforts, and we can only hope as many lives as possible are saved.
