When schools start cutting funding for sports, you know things are getting serious.

WFSB News reports:

UConn to cut university funding for 36 club sports teams

University funding for 36 club sports teams at UConn will end July 1.

UConn Rec currently funds 36 club teams, with each team receiving a different amount. That will change come July 1 when university funding for all 36 ends.

Fourteen club teams will lose their status and become registered student organizations. The 14 were chosen because they don’t use the rec center.

The remaining teams will still be allowed to practice at the rec center.

Club teams receive funding from UConn Rec and the student government.

Trevor Buckeridge is on the club ski team.

“We were always kind of expecting something like this. We were working hard to increase our fundraising because we knew at any moment our funds could get cut by the school, and we don’t want to be the year the team goes away because we couldn’t support ourselves,” Buckeridge said.

The ski team has 22 members in all, some men and some women. They travel all over the country and have won national competitions.

Buckeridge said they have been preparing for this day and are planning fundraisers in the fall to make up for the $8,500 cut.

“We are trying to ramp it up more, increase our alumni outreach and get more involved with the community as a whole,” he continued.
