University of Kansas staffer faces backlash over ‘#DeathtoMAGA’ post amid pattern of campus rhetoric
Rick Hellman, a public affairs officer at the University of Kansas, posted comments on social media last year in which he seemingly threatened Trump supporters. A viral social media post from Libs of TikTok revealed that Hellman made an online post on June 14, 2025, during the “No Kings” protest. “#DeathtoMAGA,” Hellman wrote.
The University of Kansas has had past instances of leftist faculty wishing death on people with whom they disagree politically. During the 2024 election, lecturer Philip Lowcock argued that men who refused to vote for a woman president deserved to be shot.
As a result, the University of Kansas’ Provost Bichelmeyer stated that the University of Kansas will ‘embrace dialogue’ but “violent rhetoric is never acceptable.”
Hellman’s social media post has caught the attention of former Kansas Gov. Jeff Colyer, who posted on X, calling for the university to fire Hellman. Colyer then said that as governor, he will help stop this kind of thing from happening.
So far, the University of Kansas has not reported any discipline or consequences that Rick Hellman will face for his social media post.
