Trump admin expands workforce training push in 21 states
The Trump administration has announced a major expansion of its workforce training and career-readiness agenda.
In a press release on Wednesday, the Education and Labor Departments revealed that more than 20 states have aligned their education systems with federal workforce development priorities focused on skilled trades, apprenticeships, and career pathways.
The two departments revealed that 21 states have submitted combined Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) State Plans that will integrate career and technical education programs into broader workforce development systems.
The Department of Labor website states that WIOA is “landmark legislation that is designed to strengthen and improve our nation’s public workforce system and help get Americans, including youth and those with significant barriers to employment, into high-quality jobs and careers and help employers hire and retain skilled workers.”
According to the announcement, the number of participating states has doubled from 2024, when only nine states had adopted similar plans.
Nick Moore, the acting assistant secretary for the Office of Career and Technical Education, stated as part of the announcement that the increase in participating states is “unprecedented and provides clear evidence of the utility and value being provided by the Workforce Development Partnership.”
The Education and Labor Departments’ announcement also says that the expansion is part of a broader administration plan that emphasizes “Strengthening education-workforce alignment,” “Expanding access to high-quality career pathways,” and “Building a unified talent development system that meets the skill needs of employers and creates more opportunities for all Americans.”
