LA Mayor Candidate Nithya Raman Wants to Ban Backyard BBQs on Fire Danger Days
Luckily another councilwoman struck it down, but it gives you an idea of what Raman would do as mayor.
Los Angeles mayoral hopeful Councilwoman Nithya Raman, a socialist, has proposed banning backyard barbecues on days of high fire danger.
Yeah…that will win over the masses, lady:
Raman introduced a motion Wednesday directing city officials to examine emergency restrictions on grilling during Red Flag Warning days, when high winds and dry conditions significantly increase wildfire danger across Los Angeles.
The proposal specifically asks officials to consider possible limits on backyard barbecues, fire pits and other open flames in residential neighborhoods during those high-risk weather events.
The ban included “restaurants that cook with open flames.”
Councilwoman Monica Rodriguez blocked the proposal with “a separate motion that stripped Raman’s barbecue ban.”
“The last thing Angelenos need is a ban on hosting a carne asada in their own backyard,” Rodriguez said in a statement to The California Post. We’re not checking the weather for red flag conditions before planning a backyard barbecue. This is what families do. Birthday parties. Carne asadas. Family gatherings. A lot of people barbecue.”
Rodriguez also said restaurant owners shared their concerns with her, stressing that the ban would affect their businesses.
The data support Raman’s theory, but only for charcoal grills.
Grills caused a few fires in Los Angeles, but as far as I can tell, none of them have been anything like the Palisades Fire or any of the other major fires.
Rodriguez pointed out that the LA Fire Department responded to about 33,000 fires in homeless encampments in 2025 alone.
“How about Ms. Raman focus on enforcing against the encampments that are the majority source of our fires instead of singling out residential neighborhoods and folks having backyard barbecues?” asked Rodriguez.
Good idea. Why not concentrate on actual problems?
Data shows the fire department responded to over 75,000 homeless encampment fires since 2020:
The numbers fluctuate month-to-month, but the trend is unmistakable. In 2020, LAFD logged 7,165 homeless-related fires.
From January through mid-December 2025, that number climbed to 16,982, an average of 46 fires every day in the city of Los Angeles.
Most of these fires are small and quickly extinguished, but some spread with devastating consequences.
Many people told ABC7 about incidents, including one family that lost their two dogs:
Last month, a Larchmont family lost their home and their two dogs after a fire they believe was started by squatters next door.
“I spoke to LAPD to kick them out and they did nothing, and my house burned and my dogs are dead,” homeowner Jonathan Galicia said in the aftermath.
For residents like Sidney Johnson in Westlake, the fires have become routine. Palm trees near his apartment, including those by nearby schools, are charred from repeated fires.
7 On Your Side asked Johnson if he had ever seen school age children walking by any of these fires.
“Our building contains an after-school program,” said John. “So that answers the question. Yes.”
Insane.

Nithya Raman was born in Kerala, India, on July 28, 1981.
The people who brought us the Key Bridge disater
and Bhopal …
They should be limited to running convenience stores.
Definitely don’t let them run restaurants other than Indian ones. I’ve found them to be cheap bastards when it comes to the restaurants they run. They tend to do things like count the olives they put on a sub to make sure there are no more than 6 of them.
My bigoted self has been on a tirade lately about Indian immigrants and the destruction they cause. Why are they destructive? Because they bring their old culture to this country and don’t adapt to ours. This women is yet another case, In fact the women are probably worse than the men probably because they lack opportunities in India. And here I used to be in favor of Indian immigrants but not any more,
Wanna to bet this women in a vegetarian too?
wellll there goes the blk vote!!
This is not about fire control; it is about prole control.
She aspires to be the Top Raman. Lenin would be banned from her rallies as too capitalist.
And therefore the leftwing nuts will have more and more fire days. Then the ban will be expanded to fireplaces and air quality days. And then forever.
If she was serious, she would have stated open fires other than NG/Propane. As least that would sound rational. However does she cite any evidence that outdoor cooking actually has caused a fire? Of course not. It is just people control. She perceives outdoor cooking as primarily a middle/upper class activity (that she does not engage in) and hence it must be banned.
Wait until she finds out what Mexican-Americans think about her idea. She is dead in the water. Even the very poor in Los Angeles will go to a park for a BBQ. Many parks provide the area and the facilities.
FWIW
1990-92.
“Charcoal briquettes are banned in Los Angeles due to regulations aimed at reducing air pollution and fire hazards. Residents must use cleaner alternatives like propane or electric starters for barbecuing.”
Florida counties often have burn bans during the dry seasons. They ban “campfires, bonfires, burning yard debris, burning trash, and many kinds of unpermitted controlled burns”, but not “Cooking on a BBQ grill or in a small barbecue pit”.
A solution looking for a problem. Clearly Nithya Raman,, as a candidate for mayor, sees the fire as a defining issue and even though being on the council makes her complicit, she wants to distract from that record.
Next will be banning candles in churches.
if fires are such a big deal in CA
why dont they ban fire itself!!??
Wow, scratch a Democrat and a fascist bleeds
Well, she has a point. You never know if another mad-at-the-world Leftist will take charcoal and lighter fluid into the woods on a windy day. Best to be safe.
A lot of comments appear after I log in…are we shadow-banning again?
Yep, it is a fuzzy slippers post that cannot handle a differing opinion!
Any chance of California banning arsonists?
I’m told that the wildfires are much more likely set by arsonists than by backyard barbecue.
Just a thought.
Campaign on repression, girl, FTW!
Why not campaign on bringing back the COVID quarantine? It would be an assured win in California!
why does this surprise anyone, California is probably the most regulate state in the union, probably rival the old soviet uniion
Maybe, just maybe, the LA leadership could try getting the Cray Cray folks off the streets, locking up the criminals, clearing brush/ladder.fuel, creating fire breaks, filling up their water reservoirs, ensuring they have adequate# of fire fighting personnel and fire fighting equipment, basic planning + implementation to position fire stations dispersed enough to respond immediately and with pre staged equipment in likely/fire prone areas. Do those basics before telling folks not to grill/barbecue.
And this is the SAME lunatic leftist that got booed the other day because she said homeless drug encampments right next to schools was not an issue.
Homeless drug addicts next to schools – totally safe
Guys grilling in their own backyards – SAFETY THREAT THAT MUST BE DEALT WITH
And yet she’s still likely to win because LA is just that covered in illegals and fraud.
Sure Raman Noodle Lady. That is why California burned down. Totally our backyard grilling of ribs. Nice try, communist grifter. Say, you have pulled in a few million dollars since parachuting into the state and promising to solve homelessness. How is that going?
