Strait of Hormuz Only Open for Ships Using Iranian-Approved Route’

“…on the coordinated route as already announced by Ports and Maritime Organisation of the Islamic Rep. of Iran.”

I see people, including President Donald Trump, celebrating the opening of the Strait of Hormuz.

I found a few problems, especially after one expert pointed out that the foreign minister’s statement lacks “clarity.”

“From the shipping perspective, it is certainly promising, but it doesn’t immediately give anybody enough clarity to make any firm decisions,” said Richard Meade, editor-in-chief of Lloyd’s List, according to The Wall Street Journal.

Yeah, some outlets and people have either buried the lede or omitted a few crucial details.

For instance, ships can only use an Iranian-approved route, according to Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Aragchi.

In other words, Iran has control over the Strait:

In line with the ceasefire in Lebanon, the passage for all commercial vessels through Strait of Hormuz is declared completely open for the remaining period of ceasefire, on the coordinated route as already announced by Ports and Maritime Organisation of the Islamic Rep. of Iran.

We do not know if Iran will impose a toll on those ships.

There’s another thing. The Tasnim News Agency, which is associated with the Revolutionary Guard, claimed Iran has three conditions:

  • The ships must be commercial
  • The passage of military ships is prohibited
  • Neither the ships nor their cargo may be linked to hostile countries.

Also, Iran will close the Strait if Trump continues the naval blockade.

Uh (my emphasis):

THE STRAIT OF HORMUZ IS COMPLETELY OPEN AND READY FOR BUSINESS AND FULL PASSAGE, BUT THE NAVAL BLOCKADE WILL REMAIN IN FULL FORCE AND EFFECT AS IT PERTAINS TO IRAN, ONLY, UNTIL SUCH TIME AS OUR TRANSACTION WITH IRAN IS 100% COMPLETE. THIS PROCESS SHOULD GO VERY QUICKLY IN THAT MOST OF THE POINTS ARE ALREADY NEGOTIATED. THANK YOU FOR YOUR ATTENTION TO THIS MATTER! PRESIDENT DONALD J.TRUMP

Eh. Looks like Iran is trying to claim they’ll let ships through out of kindness when, in reality they couldn’t stop them anyway. Kind of like when I see “Gluten Free” on things that never contained gluten in the first place.

interesting. My take is Iran claiming you have an agreement but it’s on our terms. Oh and you have to do everything else we want.

Actually I believe they could stop some of them or make it too potentially risky to attempt a passage.

We tested this Goodyear tire! 100% certified gluten-free!

Hard candies that are nothing but sugar labeled as “Fat free!”

I saw a jar of honey labeled Gluten-free yesterday.

My favorite label so far is the bag of raw cane sugar which assured me it was “Carbon Free”. I assume that would some combo of air and water?

Milhouse in reply to LibraryGryffon. | April 18, 2026 at 8:08 am

Sugar (/ʃʊɡər/) is a class of sweet-tasting, soluble carbohydrates,

      […]

A carbohydrate (/ˌkɑːrboʊˈhaɪdreɪt/) is a sugar (saccharide) or a sugar derivative.[1] For the simplest carbohydrates, the carbon-to-hydrogen-to-oxygen atomic ratio is 1:2:1, i.e. they are often represented by the empirical formula (CH2O)n. Together with amino acids, fats, and nucleic acids, the carbohydrates are one of the major families of biomolecules.[2]

      “Carbon-free” CH2O would presumably be H2O.

This is so irritating. It’s almost like they have an agreement to disagree because trump insists on an agreement with each side making up their own terms for the agreement. I said before what Trump cares about is making deals and not necessary the contents of the deal which are fudgeable. I have no idea if this will end well but the bumpy ride continues.

thats why in may cases the market does “better” under socialists

the companies know who to pay off and can influence the congress

in a (more) capitalist market the unknown is in play ( which is why they hate trump..one reason,, they cant pin him down) and that is in fact the way its suppose to be

“In other words, Iran has control over the Strait…”

First of all, I don’t believe this for one second. Exactly what force are they going to use to enforce this edict? Are they going to catapult used goats at offending ships?

Second, this handwringing advances from the mistaken assumption that the U.S. wants the strait open. If it’s closed, that gives the U.S. an economic advantage by selling our oil instead of the Iranians selling theirs.

Ultimately, our strategies and tactics should be focused upon grinding the Iranian economy into dust.

    Iran’s possibly force would include
    1) Mines set at night.
    2) Speedboats
    3) Ship-to-shop missiles.
    4) Drones
    5) More drones

Iran has nothing. You haven’t been paying attention. They’re done. It’s over. Put a fork in them. This noise about Iranian “control” is coming from Trump critics trying to salvage something. It’s pathetic.

ztakddot in reply to Concise. | April 18, 2026 at 2:45 pm

Considering Iran’s latest actions you should have considered being concise to the point of saying nothing at all.

Concise in reply to Peter Moss. | April 17, 2026 at 5:43 pm

The Iranians have nothing and this conclusion, “In other words, Iran has control over the Strait….,” is shockingly absurd. If the writer above really believe Iran will continue its piracy in the Strait, she needs a big time out. This would only help bring about the economic apocalypse the continued blockade threatens and that they fear more than death. Oh they’ll throw away lives like discarded trash, but taking away their money train is something that finally brought them to heel.

Liked the bit about the goats.

not wrong but a socialist style government doesnt care about their being bk

I should have known nothing but junk was behind Trump’s announcement. He needs to take a weekend off and not talk or post anywhere. Just shut up. The Strait is under the control of the US Navy, period.

healthguyfsu | April 17, 2026 at 4:37 pm

Starting to become manufactured crisis to enrich foreign oil barons at some point.

Trump proved he could neuter Iranian blockades. He has repeatedly proven he can punish them harshly. You can move through knowing that Iran will not be that stupid. They might harass you. They might even threaten you. But they won’t actually do anything unless they want to be punished good and hard.

The US has a set up a total blockade of the Strait of Hormuz. No Iranian tied ships are being allowed to enter or exit the strait so that Iran cannot sell oil. Ships transporting oil from UAE, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Kuwait, Qatar and Bahrain can pass through the strait. The US does not dictate what route those ships take within the strait. Iran may or may not be attempting to control those ships.

Between all of the AWACS, P-8 Poseidons, Global Hawks, E-2 Hawkeyes and MQ-9 Reaper drones there is so much radiation being spewed into the Strait of Hormuz you could cook a hot dog wiener in thirty seconds.

I seem to remember the E-2 Hawkeye can pick up a golfball at something like 50 miles so an Iranian Sambuk setting sail is picked up as it cast off lines in the harbor.

I call BS on anything that comes from Iran!

patchman2076 | April 17, 2026 at 5:24 pm

“ We do not know if Iran will impose a toll on those ships.”
To the author of this article, how will collect this toll?
They have no ships floating around in the strait.
Stop acting like it’s the end of mankind. Grow a spine people.
Just because these mooslims talk tough doesn’t mean they have any teeth.

Hmmm. More press just announcing stuff a terrorist regime puts out with no critical thought behind the statements just putting it out there? Sure, I believe it all.

inspectorudy | April 17, 2026 at 6:57 pm

I see two possible views of this announcement by Iran, they are BSing as usual and have absolutely nothing to do with the Strait any longer, or that may be the only safe passage because of their inability to actually mark where they laid mines.

If they don’t know where they are at all, then their “approved” route is not actually safe, I would think. But it does take time to get them back out of the way of ships.

For instance, ships can only use an Iranian-approved route
Well, I would expect that if they dropped mines out there. You would definitely want to through the non-mined passage.

Now, if it’s not followed up by “and we’re taking care of that” then it would be a sign of violating the agreement.

MoeHowardwasright | April 18, 2026 at 5:02 am

The irgcc has no control over the Strait. None. Our Destroyers that are equipped as mine sweepers have already been at work. Ships are already transiting the Strait in the international sea lanes. The blockade of Iranian ports continues. If the Iranians don’t give in by Tuesday or Wednesday they have to shut down their oil wells. It would take months to restart them. Devastating the economy and cutting off money to hamas, hezbollah and the houthis. As well as the irgcc and the mullahs.

Iran has no navy or airforce and has no control of straits. Trump must block iran ports for months and choke them out. IRGC doesn’t get paid and they refuse to fight, creating conditions for regime change.

Whenever one reads “according to the WSJ” it should give one pause.
The Democrats and their media minions, together with the Iranians and the EU talking heads do not want the Strait re-opened under Trump. Expect more articles like this in the days ahead because “stop Trump” and the War Powers Act.

So there’s factional infighting within the Iranian regime. One group makes a deal, another disputes it. With no air defense, any defiance will be dealt with harshly.

b/c we dont hiroshima the place they will continue to have their timers set on their war machines

its always this way for the winners like america

they all build up against us when they sense the winds are shifting and with china smart enough to manipulate the petro dollars etc

we will go further bk while the communists both inside and outside of america have nooo fear of bk
