A former editor at The Washington Post pleaded guilty Friday to possessing child sexual abuse material after federal agents seized a laptop containing explicit videos during an FBI search of his home last year.

Thomas P. LeGro, 48, admitted to one count of possession, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Washington, D.C. Federal agents arrested him in June 2025 after executing a court-approved search warrant at his home and seizing multiple electronic devices tied to the case.

“A review of LeGro’s laptop revealed a folder that contained 11 videos depicting child sexual abuse. These videos depicted adult men sexually abusing prepubescent children and forcing them to engage in sex acts.”

The warrant followed court approval to monitor activity on his internet account, part of an investigation that traced digital evidence back to his residence before agents moved in to seize devices and begin forensic review.

“During the execution of the warrant, agents observed what appeared to be fractured pieces of a hard drive hidden under a rug in the basement of the residence.”

The FBI Washington Field Office’s Child Exploitation and Human Trafficking Task Force led the case, which coordinated the investigation and built the evidence used by prosecutors.

LeGro worked at The Washington Post for years in video and production roles, including as deputy director of video, after first joining the outlet in 2000 and returning in 2013. He was part of the newsroom team that won a Pulitzer Prize in 2018 for investigative reporting tied to coverage of Roy Moore’s Senate campaign.

The newspaper placed him on leave after his arrest and later severed ties as the case progressed in federal court.

Sentencing is scheduled for September 2026. He faces up to 20 years in prison under federal law, with a judge set to weigh the evidence, the number of files, and federal sentencing guidelines before issuing a final decision.

Wasn’t Roy Moore accused of statutory rape? Perhaps he had a pretty good idea of how to fabricate some evidence.
