IDF Captures Top Jihadist in Lebanon Raid, Eliminates Hezbollah Artillery Commander

“The IDF said Jamaa Islamiya has advanced terror attacks against Israel and its civilians along the northern front throughout the war.”

The Israeli military captured a senior Islamic terrorist in an overnight raid in southern Lebanon. Arab media reports identified the nabbed terrorist as Atwi Atwi, a top operative of al-Jama’a al-Islamiyya terror organization.

“The Israel Defense Forces said Monday that troops arrested a senior terrorist from the Sunni Jamaa Islamiya organization during an overnight raid in southern Lebanon,” Israel’s Ynetnews reported Monday.

Al-Jama’a al-Islamiyya is a Muslim Brotherhood-linked jihadist group that wages war on Israel alongside the Iran-backed Hezbollah terror militia. The terrorist group has a significant support base in Lebanon. According to Alma, “Al-Jamaah al-Islamiyah represents a sizable portion of Lebanese Sunnis and is the second-largest Sunni movement.”

The captured terror operative could provide significant intelligence on the Islamist group’s command structure and plans. “The IDF said Jamaa Islamiya has advanced terror attacks against Israel and its civilians along the northern front throughout the war,” the news outlet added. “Israeli security officials said the decision to arrest the operative rather than kill him stemmed from the significant intelligence value expected from his interrogation, including information related to Hezbollah.”

The Times of Israel reported the details of the overnight raid:

The Israel Defense Forces captured a “senior” member of the al-Jama’a al-Islamiyya terror organization during an overnight raid in southern Lebanon, and separately killed two Hezbollah operatives, the military said Monday.

According to the IDF, the al-Jama’a al-Islamiyya operative was nabbed late Sunday from a building in the Mount Dov area near the border by a special forces unit operating under the 210th “Bashan” Regional Division. The raid was wrapped up early Monday morning, and there were no reports of clashes during the operation.

Al-Jama’a al-Islamiyya identified the official as Atwi Atwi, saying he was captured in the town of Habbariyeh, located some five kilometers north of the border. (…)

The IDF did not provide further details on the operative, other than describing him as a “senior” member of the terror group. According to a military source, the IDF decided to capture the operative instead of targeting him in a strike in an attempt to obtain intelligence on the group’s activities in Lebanon and Syria. (…)

Al-Jama’a al-Islamiyya is a Sunni faction that forms part of the broader Muslim Brotherhood political network. The armed wing of the group, the al-Fajr Forces, established in the 1980s, repeatedly targeted Israel from Lebanon during the 2023-2024 war with Hezbollah, often working in conjunction with the Iran-backed Shiite Lebanese terror group.

Hezbollah artillery commander eliminated

In another blow to Hezbollah, the IDF eliminated its artillery commander responsible for several cross-border terror attacks since October 7, 2023.

“Earlier on Monday, the IDF struck in the area of Yanouh, Lebanon, eliminating terrorist Ahmad Ali Salami, who served as Hezbollah’s Head of Artillery in the Yanouh area,” The Israel National News reported.

“The terrorist carried out numerous terror attacks throughout the war against IDF troops and the State of Israel, and recently operated to rehabilitate the artillery capabilities of the terrorist organization from within the civilian population in Lebanon, the Israeli military said in a statement on Monday.

In a separate operation, the military took out another terrorist “involved in gathering intelligence on IDF troops and operated to rehabilitate Hezbollah’s terrorist infrastructure in southern Lebanon,” the military disclosed.

The IDF strikes against Hezbollah come as the terrorist group refused to hand over weapons, ignoring the December 31 deadline set under the U.S.-brokered ceasefire. The terrorist group has instead ramped up its buildup along the Israeli border, regrouping fighters and rebuilding underground bunkers.

And here I thought Lebanon was cleaning out Hezbollah from southern Lebanon. Silly me.

this probably prevents who knows how many israeli deaths at the olympics

Good for Israel. Israel must not slack off. The war is still on.

If we found out where these groups are ordering their hats from we could follow the deliveries to one of their logistics hubs. lol

These continued successful eliminations are whittling down the terrorist capabilities. It’s less of a hydra than a next man up situation in leadership positions or specialized positions and any roles requiring significant experience/expertise. The replacement is usually less competent/effective than the guy before him. Not so much for street level goons but usually so for ‘skilled’ positions.
