Shooting at Brown University Leaves Two Dead, Nine Wounded (UPDATE: “Person of Interest” In Custody)

“Surveillance video released by police shows the suspect, dressed in black, calmly walking away from the scene.”

A gunman opened fire at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island last night, killing two people and wounding nine. At the time of this writing, the shooter is still at large.

The Associated Press reports:

Fear grips Brown University after shooter kills 2 and wounds 9 as police search for shooter

Hundreds of police officers were scouring the Brown University campus along with nearby neighborhoods and poring over video in the hunt for a shooter who opened fire in a classroom, killing two people and wounding nine others.

The search stretched late into the night, well after the shooting erupted Saturday afternoon in the engineering building of the Ivy League school in Providence, Rhode Island, during final exams.

Surveillance video released by police shows the suspect, dressed in black, calmly walking away from the scene. His face is not visible and investigators said it wasn’t clear whether the suspect is a student.

The suspect was last seen leaving the engineering building and some witnesses told police the suspect, who could be in his 30s, may have been wearing a camouflage mask, Providence Police Deputy Chief Timothy O’Hara said.

University President Christina Paxson said she was told 10 people who were shot were students. Another person was injured by fragments from the shooting but it was not clear if the victim was a student, she said.

It was a scary scene for many students:

This video report is from ABC News:

This did not inspire confidence:

This is allegedly footage of the shooter:

The FBI was at the scene pretty quickly. The New York Post reported:

FBI on scene of Brown University mass shooting

The FBI has been deployed to assist with the investigation into the attack at Brown University, President Trump said in a post to Truth Social.

“I have been briefed on the shooting that took place at Brown University in Rhode Island. The FBI is on the scene. The suspect is in custody. God bless the victims and the families of the victims!”

Authorities later walked back claims the suspect was in custody.

A manhunt is ongoing.

This is still a developing story.

UPDATE

(by WAJ)

A “person of interest” reportedly is in custody and the shelter in place order has been lifted, per news reports:

A person of interest has been detained in connection with the Brown University shooting, Providence Mayor Brett Smiley said at a news conference this morning.

Col. Oscar Perez, the chief of police in Providence, said the person was taken into custody early Sunday morning and that officials were not currently looking for anyone else. That person has not been officially charged at this point.

Perez confirmed that the detained suspect was in their 30s. He did not say where the suspect was arrested or whether the suspect was connected to the university.

Smiley added that the seven individuals who were injured at Brown remain in stable condition, while one of them is in critical but stable condition, and another has been discharged.

Once the Police ID the victims they can then look at known associates and put a picture together. This reminds me of the Virginia shooting where the shooter was mad at fellow classmates. This type of shooting is not random. It was planned and targeted persons from the discipline taking tests. As to the President of Brown…He couldn’t immediately blame it on President Trump or Republicans so he had nothing to add at this time.

What confused me was the absence of practically any information. Basic questions several hours in, after victims transported to hospitals, scene of shooting secured …and nobody would answer a question about what weapon was used? Wouldn’t even give a hedged answer that ‘X caliber casings recovered but our investigation is ongoing’.

Fox reporter on scene just made an absurd statement and their entire morning panel just let it stand. ‘Can you imagine the carnage if a semiautomatic was used?’ The context was discovery of 9mm magazines (30 round capacity). Someone with a quality gun range/training facility should offer to walk through basics of firearms knowledge, safe handling, operation and the differences, distinctions among different firearms.

if the person in the video actually IS the suspect several things can be inferred/determined from his post-offense behavior

regardless of the video available, believe this was a targeted attack–likely the shooter was known to one or more of the survivors and with that knowledge video becomes irrelevant

As a person who grew up in little Rhody and has 2 parents who are graduates of Brown Uni, I’m very sad to see this. RI has no capacity to handle this type of situation,so thank goodness for the FBI. Brown kids think their wokeness makes them safe, but of course virtue signaling never stopped bullets. I hope for the recovery of this little commiunity and some hard soul searching from Brown on how they encourage this type of violence on their camps through their embrace of “resistance by all means necessary” anticolonial garbage. Vioelnce doesn’t feel so justified when it comes knocking on your door, does it? It’s not so cool, then? How about peace through dialogue, people? Yes you may have to listen to ideas and opnions you dislike? Oh no! You may feel uncomfortbale but you’ll be alive at the end of it, and likely alot wiser. Talking to each other and challanging one another is the only way out of this mess, not more blind allegiance to violent idiotic slogans.
