Ohio Lawmaker Demands Investigation Into Alleged Daycare Fraud in Columbus

Ohio Lawmaker Demands Investigation Into Alleged Daycare Fraud in Columbus

Columbus, OH, has the second-largest Somali population, right behind Minneapolis.

Columbus, OH, has the second-largest Somali population, right behind Minneapolis.

One local media outlet launched an investigation, prompting one lawmaker to ask the Ohio Department of Children and Youth to probe all publicly funded daycare centers.

Before I go any further, I need to say that this is not a time to be reactive or hyperbolic. I see the usual content pushers on social media getting all hyper and pushing out anything and everything.

No need for hyperbole. These people see an opportunity to get on TV and have their name everywhere. So I will provide as much information as I can because I’m finding conflicting information.

ABC6

ABC6 said it received viewer requests to investigate daycares in Columbus after hearing about the mess in Minnesota.

The investigative team “identified several daycare facilities, including a series of centers located in the same strip mall.”

One daycare facility has “a U-Haul key drop-off at its front door.”

ABC6 requested information from Franklin County and the state “regarding public funds, overpayments, and potential fraud within daycare centers.”

Muckraker.com Stakes Out Great Minds Learning Center

Muckraker.com also walked the streets of Columbus, OH, to investigate Somali-affiliated daycare centers.

The reporter asked people across the street from the Great Minds Learning Center about the daycare.

The man said, “I’ve never seen nobody come out the building or go in the building.”

Another man has also never seen anyone go in or out of the building. However, the man said, “They use the back door.”

The reporter knocked on the door and rang the doorbell. No one answered. The door was locked.

The reporter goes to the back of the building and….there’s nothing there.

Information About Great Minds Learning Center Contradicts Muckraker

However, The Columbus Dispatch reported:

The day care in question is not registered as a publicly funded day care according to DYC records. However, it has a Ohio PROMISE Program designation, meaning it is credentialed to care for children with special needs and can receive reimbursements from the state. The program has a “gold” Step Up To Quality rating, the highest designation for day care providers.

According to an unannounced inspection, which was conducted in November 2025 and lasted for eight hours, 87 children were enrolled there and there was a 3-to-8 instructor to pupil ratio for the youngest age group and a 1-to-14 instructor to pupil ratio for the oldest, school-age group. The inspection found no serious-risk compliance issues, two moderate compliance risks and 14 low-risk compliance issues.

The Dispatch contacted the day care but has not heard back.

Independent Journalist Intimidated Outside of Binati Childcare Two

Independent journalist Thomas Hern decided to stop by the Somali-run Binati Childcare Two in Columbus on Tuesday.

A group of men accosted Hern, calling him a terrorist for asking questions.

Gov. DeWine Brushes Aside Concerns, State Reps. Want Answers

How did Republican Gov. Mike DeWine respond to the allegations?

This is something that is unfortunately the cost of doing business.”

Yup:

Dan Tierney, spokesperson for DeWine, said it’s “not accurate that we’re seeing any sort of surge” but the governor’s office is taking note of the public interest in the issue.

“If people are out there who could not contemplate that people were trying to defraud the public through day care centers, I understand it’s new to them … but it’s been known to the state for decades,” Tierney said. “So therefore, we have robust anti-fraud measures to try and stop this, this is something that is unfortunately the cost of doing business.”

Tierney declined to comment on the allegations primarily circulating around Somali immigrants.

State Representative Josh Williams (R-Sylvania Township) sent a letter, co-signed by 42 colleagues, to the Ohio Department of Children and Youth, demanding a thorough review of all publicly funded daycare centers.

“These allegations raise serious concerns regarding program integrity, the responsible use of taxpayer dollars, and the overall credibility of Ohio’s publicly funded childcare system,” said Williams. “Unannounced inspections are an essential tool to identify violations, deter fraudulent practices, and reinforce confidence in the oversight of publicly funded programs.”

The representatives request:

  • Conduct increased unannounced inspections of Columbus-area childcare facilities receiving state funding;
  • Audit attendance records and billing submissions to identify potential fraudulent reporting;
  • Immediately suspend or withhold any further state payments to any childcare facility where inspections or audits indicate probable fraud, false attendance reporting, or other material misrepresentations, pending full investigation and adjudication;
  • Refer any substantiated cases of fraud to the appropriate prosecuting authorities;
  • Provide the General Assembly with a summary of findings and any resulting enforcement actions or recommended policy changes; and
  • Continue cooperation with the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services’ inspection programs and assets.

Somali corruption, who would have known.

This is far reaching and politicians on both sides of the aisle is ignoring it.

some ignore it for the votes
some ignore it because they are afraid
some ignore it because they are getting paid

When it all goes down and the indictments start, it will be the ignorant and stupid going to prison while the big crooks will get off scot free.

First, they came for the Gypsies, but I didn’t care because I’m not a Gypsy.

Then, they came for the Somalis, and I said, “Make sure you get ALL the Somalis.”

The republicans who are rejoicing in this will most likely discover that it’s a game played by both sides. To paraphrase what my granddaddy used to say about playing cards, “The corruption, she has no home.”

    correct

    the difference is

maga people want criminals ( gop or dems) punished

rinos and leftists want maga people punished

I don’t think anyone seriously doubts that fraud is likely happening across the country, or that this kind of corruption and fraud is limited to only the D Party and blue states. It still must be rooted out.

    Milhouse in reply to Obie1. | January 1, 2026 at 12:43 am

What are “both sides” here? The only “side” I’m aware of in Minnesota is that the Somali community has close connections with the DFL, and therefore has cover, and some members seem to have taken advantage of that. Are you suggesting that there are similar communities with close enough Republican connections to shield them from scrutiny, and individuals in those communities that have taken similar advantage?

    henrybowman in reply to Obie1. | January 1, 2026 at 4:32 pm

Let’s just say that my Little List does not lack for Republicans.

Somalis have every right to rip off the american tax payers just as much as any group(s) have done

thats what they’re really saying

destroycommunism | December 31, 2025 at 5:03 pm

gop gov dewiner at least is upfront about his hate for america

Classic “dog ate my homework” excuse:

One quick thinking Somali day care owner reported his day care was broken into and all the enrollment records and financial records were stolen.

Paula in reply to Paula. | December 31, 2025 at 5:14 pm

I heard from a reliable source that the Minneapolis burglars, having become frustrated with burglary in America, went to Germany and broke through the wall of a bank. Unfortunately, there were no valuable day care enrollment records there, so they stole all the money instead.

henrybowman in reply to Paula. | January 1, 2026 at 4:37 pm

D/Ed should immediately demand all students be sequestered from that dangerous location until a full investigation can be completed.

gov spokes lackey:

but it’s been known to the state for decades,” Tierney said. “So therefore, we have robust anti-fraud measures to try and stop this, this is something that is unfortunately the cost of doing business.”

next question:

ok

how many have been jailed in the past 30 years for doing so?

how many times has a gop gov sought out to bust up these crime syndicates ??

How long before the Democrats bring out the “Everybody’s doin’ it!” Defense?

“It’s all ab0ut the Benjamins,” for these greasy, lazy, entitled, subversive, avaricious, lawless and vile Somali Islamofascist/Muslim supremacist leeches, parasites and thieves. Starting with the ugly, corrupt and self-enriching fabulist, ingrate and bigot, Ilhan Omar.

Oh, goody. Will there be a strongly-worded letter, or dare we hope for a VERY strongly-worded letter?

Is DeWine really a republican?? I seem more of a republican than he is and I’m no republican.

BTW: What is it about Ohio republicans? First it was John (My father was a Postman) Kasich and now its Mike (Happy Kwanza) DeWine. It’s not as if it’s Massachusetts and you must be a moderate or leans left Republican to win. Is Ohio that slushy?

Crawford in reply to ztakddot. | January 1, 2026 at 12:44 am

I found out today that DeWine grew up in Yellow Springs, OH. Yellow Springs is the Berkeley of Ohio.

I have no idea how he was allowed to run as a Republican.

Milhouse in reply to Crawford. | January 1, 2026 at 7:31 am

Anyone is allowed to run as a Republican, or as a Democrat. There’s nothing a party can do to stop someone from running in its primaries, even if it wants to. That’s how you get the occasional nazi who wins the GOP nomination for some unwinnable seat, because no one else bothered to file for it.

UVABuck in reply to Crawford. | January 1, 2026 at 9:41 am

Yellow Springs, while home to Antioch College is surrounded by Greene County, which is quite conservative – kind of like Austin is to the rest of Texas. That said, I think DeWine is just one in a long line of RINOs (think Voinovich, Kasich) that have plagued the Ohio Republican Party for some time. Right now, he’s just playing out the string of his last year in office, so he can let his freak flag fly.

Dean Robinson in reply to ztakddot. | January 1, 2026 at 11:12 am

Country Club Republicans really frown on making too big a fuss about such things because it might upset the status quo, and therefore contribute to a decline in dinner invitations. Also, the smart fraudsters have probably been spreading the wealth enough to prudently wet the beaks of anyone who might be potentially useful. Entrenched RINOs have always worked diligently to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory, and Ohio certainly has a few of those still prevaricating around.

Of course they aren’t seeing any type of “surge” in fraud. It’s been endemic to every place Somali’s infested for years. Just regular business as usual.

Gov DeWine’s comments demonstrate once again how out of touch the establishment is with the concerns of the emergent center/right populism driving the political fortunes of the GoP. Sure there’s always gonna be some level of fraud occurring or attempted and no one disputes that reality. The problem is the go along/get along establishment leadership doesn’t seem concerned about the increasing level of fraud/shenanigans across multiple programs. Nor do they seem to have adequate safeguards, audits, reviews and penalties. Heck they don’t seem willing to use what tools they do have to initiate investigations and prosecutions. TBH I am getting the impression these leaders don’t understand how much the era of high trust society and reliance on honor systems has been undermined by importation of massive amounts of Aliens over such a short timeline from foreign cultures so dissimilar from our own and who’ve not been assimilated into our civic society/culture. It’s as if these Ned Flanders types really expect Aliens to become model residents/Citizens just by crossing the border granting these Aliens far too much of a good faith presumption. Or maybe they know how bad it is but refuse to act decisively b/c they either don’t care about the consequences, they actually desire the consequences or believe that the USA ‘deserves’ the negative consequences.

Here’s how to keep one’s sanity. If you were running a business in Sicily and a man picked up a bag of cash from you weekly, you’d just pay it and not request that auditors determine if it was being put to proper use.

Just pay the extortion (taxes), and move to the whitest, most conservative area you can find. Then avoid watching any television and only read the news headlines and summaries from one wire service. Read old books and find a sport and a hobby you enjoy. That is all you can do, and you will be much happier.

The child daycare fraud seems to be national in scope. Almost like a fraud franchise. Are there really so many Somali children needing daycare? Are there really this many Somali children? Someone should add up all the children supposedly in day care and compare that to a census of children in the given Somali community.

Don’t forget the six million autistic ones.

MajorWood in reply to Concise. | January 1, 2026 at 4:52 pm

Even worse, why are we providing daycare to people who don’t actually go to work? The answer is because daycare is where the indoctrination starts. “We can’t read, we can’t add, but we know that whitey is bad.”

As DJT once said, “They’re not sending their best…”.

Subotai Bahadur | January 1, 2026 at 3:41 pm

What odds would you give that:

1) There will be a real investigation?,
2) That if there is a real investigation it will involve anyone more than flunkies?,
3) That there will be real sentences imposed?,
4) And that any foreign nationals involve will be actually deported?.
