New York Rep. Elise Stefanik Suspends Governor Campaign, Won’t Run for Re-Election
Was not expecting this.
This is a shock.
Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-NY) has suspended her campaign for New York governor.
Stefanik wrote on X:
While spending precious time with my family this Christmas season, I have made the decision to suspend my campaign for Governor and will not seek re-election to Congress. I did not come to this decision lightly for our family.
I am truly humbled and grateful for the historic and overwhelming support from Republicans, Conservatives, Independents, and Democrats all across the state for our campaign to Save New York.
However, as we have seen in past elections, while we would have overwhelmingly won this primary, it is not an effective use of our time or your generous resources to spend the first half of next year in an unnecessary and protracted Republican primary, especially in a challenging state like New York.
And while many know me as Congresswoman, my most important title is Mom. I believe that being a parent is life’s greatest gift and greatest responsibility. I have thought deeply about this and I know that as a mother, I will feel profound regret if I don’t further focus on my young son’s safety, growth, and happiness – particularly at his tender age.
I am incredibly grateful to the people of New York’s 21st District for entrusting me to represent you in the United States Congress. Thank you to my dedicated staff over the past decade. I am proud of the significant results that we successfully delivered for the hardworking families in our district and across America. It has been a tremendous professional honor to serve as your Congresswoman over the past eleven years.
Thank you for your support and encouragement as my family and I look forward to the next meaningful personal and professional chapter.
God Bless and Merry Christmas

That sounds like a family/health issue and wanting privacy statement.
Either that or somebody is threatening her with some potentially embarrassing information.
That was my likely backup choice. The lock on the closet with skeleton might have been a bit flimsy.
Maybe enough sane people have left NY that she no longer has a sufficient base.
She’s still golden upstate. Either she said something stupid 20 years ago or she’s worried about being gerrymandered out of her district. Either way, except in the case of a serious illness or similar, the “family” excuse is a standard coverup for “I screwed up”.
Or maybe her job just totally sucks and she’s sick and tired of it. Who wants to have a job where you get in a pissing match with someone during every moment of your existence.
Sucks. Need a counter to Mamdani
Nah, let Mamdani get everything he wants and show America what the future holds.
“my most important title is Mom”
So true, children deserve committed parents, society suffers otherwise.
Come back when your kids are in College. New York will still need you.
It’s sad to see so many of you who are so jaded and conspiratorial that you can’t take her at her word. She is a good woman with high morals and I believe her. My daughter just had a son and she is doing the same thing and giving up her well paying job to nurse and raise him properly.
I hope it is a true family-centered decision. But, dang, what timing.
The trouble is that the guy who has entered on the Republican side, Blakeman, looks like a RINO who is already showing signs that he does not know how to run an effective campaign.
Elise Stefanik is one of the hardest working representatives. She has been wonderful for her upper New York district and especially Fort Drum. However, she has been subjected to death threats and her family has been threatened too. The left has made it clear they can eliminate people who threaten their power. This is a big loss for her district and for the country.
Traps should be set to catch those making threats, designed to deliver instant justice. At some point they must be punished.
“… she has been subjected to death threats and her family has been threatened too.”
If this is the reason she is dropping out it would make me *extremely* angry. I hate the left so much. It makes you want to go Pinochet on them.
Last week she called out Majority Leader Johnson, said he was a wimp, wouldn’t fight for MAGA she had a bill in the house and he acted like he never saw it
It’s something I’ve heard him say often.
I dont think she wants anything to do with Johnson , she doesn’t trust him
I was not happy when Trump pulled her Ambassador to UN out because of thin majority in House.
She deserved a premier position.
I think she was going to be in a big fight but I don’t think that scared her, she’s a fighter
I’m hoping Trump puts her in a big position that probably will open up
I’m sure she is feeling that pull with her children or child, but in reality, the house is not in session all year and if she really wanted it , I’m sure Trump would have found a way for her to go back go back home more often.
I’m also aware after calling Johnson out, Trump bought them both in the Oval Office and her Admendment did get put back in the bill.
VD Hanson had an interesting podcast last week on Stefanik’s falling out with M Johnson over the bill she introduced in Congress. That was perhaps the trigger to her decision. She is likely fed up with the stodginess and narrow mindedness of the GOP establishment, finding it not worth fighting against such high odds. She is probably right, but in the long run it’s a loss for the voters. She was a serious Congresswoman and a fighter.
