Self-Described Communist, Anti-Israel Cornell Student Elected to Ithaca Common Council

A young woman named Hannah Shvets, a Cornell student, was elected to the Ithaca Common Council last week. She is a member of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) and the Communist Party USA.
She has also participated in anti-Israel protests, which is now standard for anyone on the left.

After socialist Zohran Mamdani won last week’s New York mayoral race, an upstate city has gone one better by electing a full-blown communist.
Hannah Shvets, 20, a student organizer and member of the Communist Party USA, was elected to the Ithaca Common Council on Thursday in the Democratic stronghold’s Fifth Ward, which covers the western half of Cornell University’s campus in the city.
Shvets, a Democrat and Cornell sophomore, defeated independent candidate and former Democratic primary hopeful G.P. Zurenda after winning the endorsement of groups that include Ithaca branch of the Democratic Socialists of America and the Ithaca Tenants Union.
The inexperienced radical — who was pictured with a cutout of Mamdani — was the youngest DSA-endorsed candidate to be elected in the party’s history.
Shvets has also participated in numerous anti-Israel protests since Hamas’ attack on the Jewish state on Oct. 7, 2023, according to left-wing outlet People’s World, which celebrated her victory.
In this video, Shvets describes how she came to her beliefs and why she ran for office. You’ll notice that she uses the same sort of talking points we hear from Bernie Sanders, AOC, etc.

She wants to create a ‘Community Accountability Board, which would investigate the Ithaca Police Department in instances where misconduct is suspected.’
Shvets has also pledged ‘reparations for Black Ithacans, along with increased financial support for Black community organizations.’
The student doubled down on her commitment to ensuring Ithaca remains a ‘sanctuary city’ for ‘immigrants, those seeking gender-affirming care, and [those seeking] reproductive care.’
Shvets said she would encourage officials not to cooperate with any federal law enforcement, like ICE, seeking to detain residents based on immigration status.
She is also an outspoken advocate for Palestine and has attended several anti-Israel protests since the October 7, 2023 attack by Hamas.

Interesting times ahead for the more lefty jurisdictions whose electorate has chosen poorly. I’d suggest anyone who isn’t a true believer in the DSA policy platform agenda should get out ahead of the rush for an exit. You don’t want to be the last vehicle in the final convoy trying to escape the lefty mob as the place implodes. You sure as heck shouldn’t expect some rescue mission to come and save you from your own poor choice, even if it was just to wait too long to get out. Sell your house while it still has positive value. Find another job in a new place in a sane jurisdiction far away from anywhere the lefty lunacy is dominant…or don’t. Your choice but also your consequences.
I hear you loud and clear, Commochief, but Ithaca’s physical setting is so beautiful that I think it would be hard to leave. Also, maybe it’s a good thing that so many Leftists are concentrated in one place so that other localities have a better chance of avoiding the ills of socialism.

And likely this is just the start of her political career ; people like this love the power and I’m sure she’ll try move in to something even more damaging in the future.

Just another Cornell student setting out to straighten out those poor intellectually challenged townies down the Hill. I know that there have been a couple of grads that were mayor, not sure what impact they had. As my Cornell grad son says- Ithaca is Berkley without the homeless (although I read of a huge homeless encampment near what was called “the octopus” in my day).
One loony council member isn’t a problem, it’s entertainment. The problem is when a majority of the crew is divorced from reality.
She seems unable to grasp that Ithaca’s tight rental market is affected by all those CU and IC students needing housing.
