Mamdani Admits He Wasn’t Talking About His Aunt Who Feared for Safety After 9/11
The woman was his father’s cousin.
Socialist Zohran Mamdani, the likely next New York City mayor, made waves the other day when he said his aunt feared for her safety while wearing a hijab on the subway after 9/11.
It didn’t take long for people to prove that Mamdani lied as a way to accuse people of Islamophobia, as people continue to bring up his anti-Israel views.

Mamdani admitted the person in his story wasn’t his aunt but a distant relative.
Mamdani told reporters today:
Yes, that’s I was speaking about my aunt. I was speaking about Zehra Fuhi, my father’s cousin, who sadly passed away a few years ago. And for the takeaway for my more than 10 minute address about Islamophobia in this race and in this city, to be the question of my aunt, tells you everything about Andrew Cuomo and his inability to reckon with a crisis of his own.

My point, which should be obvious to any honest person with an IQ above 80, is that people who claim that Pelosi is Newsom’s aunt, which was never true at all, have no right to condemn Mamdani for referring to an actual close relative of an older generation as his aunt. You can’t hold both positions simultaneously.
It is normal practice in the English language, as in many other languages, to refer to older relatives as “aunt” or “uncle”, even though they are not. So Mamdani did not lie. But the fact remains that she was not in fact his aunt, and Pelosi isn’t even a relative of Newsom, so the fact that so many people here are complaining about his words here makes it impossible for those same people to make the claim they do about Newsom. You can’t have it both ways, and those that think they can merely because in both cases it’s the position that attacks a Democrat show that they have no morals.
Given what we know of Mamdani, it’s likely he’s lying about the cousin, too.
Also, if you (Mamdani, not you) are going to spout off on something like that and accuse people of things, then you probably shouldn’t fling words carelessly about. At least, if you want people to not dismiss you as a liar later.

And the woman who just passed away was not my aunt, and I never claimed she was; she was not technically related to me at all, but I called her “auntie” as an honorary title of respect. If I were to casually refer to her as “my aunt” in conversation I would not be stating the truth, but might just be simplifying what would otherwise be a complicated story, rather than an attempt to deceive. If the exact relationship were not the point of the story, then it would be an understandable simplification, because human language is like that. But it still wouldn’t be accurate.
People who make the claim about Newsom are always doing so for the sole purpose of implying that he somehow corrupt, or that he benefits from that relationship, or that there’s some sort of nepotism going on. And that’s just not true, because they are not related. She isn’t his aunt, she’s not even a cousin, she’s just a relative’s ex-relative. And there’s no evidence that they have the sort of relationship one has with older relatives that involves calling them “auntie”. So making the claim is wrong. And doing so while at the same time attacking Mamdani is dishonest.
