Fetterman Continues Defying Democrats in Remarks at Kennedy Center Town Hall Event

“I grew up, I knew and I love people that voted for President Trump. But they are not fascists. They’re not Nazis. They’re not trying to destroy the Constitution and those things.”

As Legal Insurrection reported earlier, Sen. John Fetterman (D-PA) continues to be his own man on key issues that inflame leftist tensions, so much so that reports are swirling that there are efforts underway to try and primary him in 2028.

And in the aftermath of Fetterman’s congratulatory message to President Trump on the peace deal between Israel and Hamas, something that allowed for the remaining living hostages to be freed and the remains of those who were murdered in captivity to be returned to their families, the senator is once again marching to the beat of his own drum.

He ripped into the woke left for viewing Trump supporters as “fascists” and “Nazis” during a NewsNation town hall held at the Kennedy Center on Wednesday (transcribed from video):

I’m the only Democrat in my family. I grew up in a conservative part of Pennsylvania. And I grew up, I know and I love people that voted for President Trump. But they are not fascists. They’re not Nazis. They’re not trying to destroy the Constitution and those things.

And that’s part of another thing. I refuse to call people Nazis or fascists. I would never compare anybody, anybody to Hitler and those things.

Warning of the “extreme kind of outcomes” that he said could come with such incendiary rhetoric, Fetterman then referenced the September assassination of conservative leader Charlie Kirk and the attempted assassinations of then-GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump from the summer of 2024:

Like Charlie Kirk – for me, all I could say is let people grieve, give people the space. I’m not going to use that terrible thing and that assassination to make my argument and try to put out my views.

It’s like, my God, you know, he’s a father that had his neck blown out by a bullet. And now people have forgotten: President Trump was in my state [and] was shot in the head. Could you imagine where our nation would be if he was hit in the same way as Kirk? We really got to turn the temperature down.

Watch:

Fetterman also reminded folks that, as far as the Biden-era “extra” Obamacare subsidies that are set to expire are concerned, that’s on Democrats, not Republicans:

“I would love to have a conversation about extending the tax credits for health care. But I would remind everybody too … this was designed by the Democratic Party to expire at the end of the year. This is not something taken from the Republicans. They were designed to expire.”

Watch:

At another point during the segment, where the discussion was on whether Fetterman was truly a Democrat, he made it clear that he was, but emphasized that he will put country over party every time if he thinks what Democrats are advocating is harmful for America.

Clearly, he believes the Schumer shutdown is one of those things:

As Mary said, “I don’t hide my respect for Fetterman. I do not agree with him the majority of the time. It’s his respect for others and his willingness to speak to those on the other side.”

Seconded.

Desperation breeds fake contempt. I still hold zero trust in him.

He does seem to be the only sane Democrat in office at the moment.

Pity he rarely ever votes against Democrat positions though 🤔

Fetterman’s pro-Israel stance is morally correct, and, in an era when anti-Israel venom and vilification are stock Dhimmi-crat orthodoxies, that stance is laudable and deserves praise — irrespective of Fetterman’s adherence to other aspects of the Dhimmi-crats’ wretched platform.

Criticize Fetterman where he fairly deserves criticism, and, praise him where he fairly deserves praise.

I want him to stay a Democrat and take that party back from the crazy marxists.

The ACA needs to go

And that’s part of another thing. I refuse to call people Nazis or fascists. I would never compare anybody, anybody to Hitler and those things.

He’s wrong there. There are people who are indeed comparable to Hitler, or worse.

Wouldn’t it be a hoot if the DemoncRats knocked Fetterman out of the running only to lose to a Republican?

Does it matter though? If he crosses the aisle to vote with Republicans when it counts, what difference does it make? He is not, like most in his party, following the DEM playbook – he’s voting his conscience and for the good of his constituency. I’d take him over a RINO, so be careful what you wish for.

On the Left right scale in the Senate, 0 = Bernie and 1 = some GOP Fiscal Hawk,

I understand Fetterman is like .2 and Murkowski a .5

He’s Lefter than 2/3 of the Dems by vote. But He takes some good positions…

Can we just trade Murkowski for him?

To be totally honest, he is not ‘defying’ Democrats. He is defying the left-wing politics that has totally consumed the party, and providing well-needed leadership for sane Democrats who would like to see their party return to “We have different opinions than Republicans in some areas and we are working to find a common ground” rather than the present “Everything Trump or any of his supporters does is evil and they deserve (fill in violent action here).”
