British Prof Accuses Tolkien of Colonial Imagery in Lord of the Rings

British Prof Accuses Tolkien of Colonial Imagery in Lord of the Rings

A University of Nottingham course titled “HIST2056: Imagining ‘Britain’: Decolonising Tolkien” distorts the beauty and meaning of the author’s iconic works.

I may have identified Professor Jacobson’s 17th million data point showing that the university system is not salvageable.

Today’s data point comes from the United Kingdom. A University of Nottingham course titled HIST2056: Imagining ‘Britain’: Decolonising Tolkien is drawing a ton of attention for review of J.R.R. Tolkien’s works, especially the iconic The Lord of the Rings, through the “lens of race and mythology”.  But mostly race.

The course, taught by historian Dr. Onyeka Nubia, offers some truly absurd and disturbing perspectives and connections.

A history module called Decolonising Tolkien et al, taught at the University of Nottingham, uses a text that says orcs and other dark-skinned characters in the trilogy are the victims of “ethnic chauvinism”.

Dr Onyeka Nubia, a historian and writer who leads the module, argues that eastern races in the fictional realm of Middle Earth are depicted as evil while fairer-skinned peoples of the west are shown as virtuous.

In academia, “decolonising” usually means re-examining or moving away from white, western viewpoints.

In the module’s core text, Dr Onyeka writes that maligned peoples include Easterlings, Southrons and men from Harad. The trilogy also features the dark-skinned orcs, evil creatures that do the bidding of Sauron, known as the “Dark Lord”.

What is even more disturbing is the history that this “professor” is presenting as fact.

Dr Nubia, an occasional contributor to the BBC, provided articles saying medieval England “had diverse populations and Africans lived there”, but “ethnic chauvinism” was evident in literature, including Milton’s Paradise Lost, and that the tradition persisted in the works of Tolkien and Lewis.

He claims in the core module text that Shakespeare’s work helped to promote a vision of a “fictional, mono-ethnic English past”. His plays are said to be problematic for “missing direct references to Africans living in England”, creating the “illusion” of racial homogeneity in England.

That being said, there is plenty of material that refutes the assertions about Tolkien’s work. Perhaps the pest comes from Patheos contributor Henry Karlson:

Racism and religious bigotry share a common core. Both forms of bias found Tolkien’s strong objection. Yet, he also realized how difficult it is to overcome either. Indeed, he knew how such ideologies infected the minds of great peoples, which is why the manifestation of this problem often found itself in his works with peoples who had reasons to think themselves to be great (such as the Elves).

The problem is not in the recognition of their own greatness, but in the way they thought it meant others, in their differences, were inferior; those who had some sort of racial pride often became negligent in that pride, causing their own destruction, while those of other races, those who were considered to be inferior, were often the very ones who achieved the greatest deeds of all, showing how far from reality such prejudices actually were.

Perhaps the most important demonstration of this in The Lord of the Rings is found in what Tolkien recorded of the deeds of the Hobbits, the little folk who seemed to be insignificant and yet who, among all others, were the ones who were able to do what needed to be done to save Middle Earth. The Elves, despite their apparent greatness, just stood back and let things fall apart, and in doing so, felt the slow waning of their power and influence in Middle Earth.

I fervently hope that more young people will reflect on whether it is worth the cost of tuition to be subjected to nonsensical ramblings from a DEI enthusiast. Converted to U.S. dollars, the estimated annual cost for a British student typically is about $12,000 USD for most undergraduate and postgraduate degrees. That’s about $50,000 USD without including other expenses.

How much value does a British student truly get by being exposed to this kind of inanity?  It certainly can’t help contribute to the quality of life or employment for young British citizens once they graduate.

I read the entire Lord of the Rings trilogy to my son, and the extended movies are an annual event during Christmas week. It was educational and spiritually uplifting.

I will conclude this piece with my favorite moment from the trilogy.

I wish I could stab the heart of DEI cultism and make it disappear.

I suspect this professor’s knowledge of medieval history comes from watching bad Robin Hood movies featuring Morgan Freeman.

It was totally not about good vs evil. Not at all.

If you read the descriptions of orcs and think of blacks, you’re the racist. Orcs were made evil; either crafted ex nihilo by Morgoth or from horrible magics imposed on elves and men. Tolkien struggled with the question of whether they could be redeemed spiritually.

Dimsdale in reply to Crawford. | October 20, 2025 at 1:02 pm

I wonder if this hack professor with her knickers in a woke bind ever considered that Orcs were large, powerful, fearsome creatures, and the elves, hobbits and dwarves were all tiny and well, dwarfish?

    diver64 in reply to Crawford. | October 20, 2025 at 6:11 pm

I have to say I read The Ring trilogy in 6th grade so I was, I think 11 yrs old. In my far neck of the woods I didn’t meet a black person until I joined the Army 7 yrs later and arrived at Ft Jackson. Funny I never saw any racism or any other ‘ism” in the books.

Considering the main heroes were small people and a woman I’m not sure what he’s rambling on about. Sounds like he got his introduction to Middle Earth through the DEI loTR series.

The empire-builder associated “native” with people native where he worked, with fear and contempt, and the implication naturally subservient race. This became common knowledge, and affected people back home. Hence you get orcs.

The patriot’s view “a man is native where he walks” coexists but stays separate.

racists see racism everywhere.

Why do these people need to look for racism in classic literature when real in your face racism and inequality is occurring in many part of the world, and no one seems to care. All he needs to do is look at parts of Africa, China and the middle east to see cases of in your face racism, sexism and horrific discrimination. No one needs to search for coded messages in books, just look in front of your face. But then again that would mean that you can’t blame evil white people but might have to point of finger at the holy of all holiness: “people of color,” which I think includes all sorts of white people like people from the Levant, Chinese, Iranians etc somehow.

Crawford in reply to schmuul. | October 20, 2025 at 12:07 pm

Because finding actual racism doesn’t let him attack western civilization.

Dimsdale in reply to Crawford. | October 20, 2025 at 1:05 pm

And looking at actual racism would point to the left’s virulent racism and the fact that it is they who instituted systemic racism, e.g. affirmative action and other race based gov’t programs.

If you google his name (as I did, trying to find out where he was born and failed) you will see this regurgitated over and over….

Dr Onyeka Nubia is a pioneering and internationally recognised historian, writer and presenter who is reinventing our perceptions of British history.

Well, they ain’t lying.

MAJack in reply to mjm. | October 20, 2025 at 1:16 pm

Maybe he can become the new Head of Education in Iowa, they have an opening.

“Winston’s greatest pleasure in life was in his work. Most of it was a tedious routine, but included in it there were also jobs so difficult and intricate that you could lose yourself in them as in the depths of a mathematical problem — delicate pieces of forgery in which you had nothing to guide you except your knowledge of the principles of Ingsoc and your estimate of what the Party wanted you to say. Winston was good at this kind of thing.”

I bet Comrade Nubia is, too.

Does anyone really care what someone who calls themself ‘Onyeka Nubia’ thinks?

Did that founding a cult and claiming Scotland thing not work out for him?

The only period of his life Tolkien didn’t live in England was spent in France fighting for his country in WW1.

Unless decolinzation means giving the UK back to Romans (how would that work have they invented the ability to ressurect??) decolinzation means anti-White bigotry

I don’t care if Tolkien was inspired by colonial imagery, far from it colonization gave us America, it gave us Australia, it gave us New Zealand etc.

If you want to decolonize here is a list

1. Delete all American inventions from the life you live

2. Delete all Australia, Oceanic, and Polish inventions and patents as well (It doesn’t justify German nationalism but Poland has historically had a great deal of German influence, but Germans are not native to Poland…colonization?).

3. Refuse to use any goods brought to you by globalism which is the result of global trade brought to you by colonial era innovations driven by colonization (the only earlier example of mass trade connecting a world was the Roman Empire which only connected Europe North Africa and a piece of the Middle East)

While living like a hobo realize you deserve it.

Lucifer Morningstar | October 20, 2025 at 12:24 pm

Meh. Whatever. I’ve got a serious case of black fatigue and can’t really bring myself to care that another black professor is crying racism in a work of fiction. I thought we had moved beyond such nonsense. But there you go and here we are.

OK Prof. Now do Wakanda. Oh and while you’re at it do Zimbabwe and South Africa today,

alaskabob in reply to ztakddot. | October 20, 2025 at 12:35 pm

Add the Congo to that also. The problem is that the Europeans made “modern” governmental rule look easy…after taking centuries to take the rough edges off. Tribalism is returning the the British Isles with no Alfred in sight.

Dimsdale in reply to ztakddot. | October 20, 2025 at 1:07 pm

Why, if not for colonialism, all of Africa would be a real life Wakanda, don’t ya know?

Who is “colonializing” whom prof? You are a foreigner in a foreign land. So much for bringing civilization to darkest (can I say that?) Africa.

“…especially the iconic The Lord of the Rings, through the “lens of race and mythology”.”

“Through the lens of…” simply means that what follows is purely self-projective BS.

JackinSilverSpring | October 20, 2025 at 12:38 pm

But for colonization many blacks in the West would still be in Africa and Africa would be yet more backwards and balkanized than it is.

ChatGpt can not give me a direct quote due to copyright, but it did give me a summary of “how orcs are described in the book”:

Orcs in Tolkien’s works are generally depicted as:

– Twisted and corrupted creatures, originally bred by Morgoth, the first Dark Lord. In some versions of Tolkien’s legendarium, orcs may have originally been Elves that were captured and mutilated.
– Ugly and grotesque, often described as having swarthy or sallow skin, fangs, and distorted features.
– Malicious and cruel, with a hatred for the Free Peoples of Middle-earth (Elves, Men, Dwarves, etc.).
– Cowardly when alone, but dangerous in large numbers, especially under the command of a powerful leader.
– Savage in battle, using crude but deadly weapons and armor.

Now I am wondering how do you go from that to “Black People”. This goes a bit beyond just racism.
Gotta be a really twisted mind, and I pity the youth that listen to this “professor”.

retiredcantbefired | October 20, 2025 at 1:36 pm

Has this fool even read Tolkien?

Southrons and the men of Harad are one and the same.

Orcs are said to be ugly, but their complexions get no further attention.

The greatest fantasy novel(s) the world has ever know

Some people can’t take true greatness

Jealous, shallow and untalented

Alex deWynter | October 20, 2025 at 2:32 pm

Dr. Hater McNobody says what?

Subotai Bahadur | October 20, 2025 at 2:42 pm

Considering that britain itself has been pretty thoroughly colonized by Islam, paying attention to Leftists calling brits colonizers is pretty pointless.

Subotai Bahadur

“British Prof Accuses Tolkien of Colonial Imagery”
So how did Tolkien respond?
Oh, that’s right — he can’t.
Such a man of courage, taking potshots at the dead.

WOW- Black people really hate black people.

First it was the non-biologist SCOTUS judge saying we need to treat black people like the mentally disabled. Next a black prof is equating black people to savages with cannibalistic tendencies.

Are we sure these two aren’t on that racist group chat everyone is in a tizzy over?

Milhouse in reply to Andy. | October 20, 2025 at 8:04 pm

First it was the non-biologist SCOTUS judge saying we need to treat black people like the mentally disabled.

No, she did not say that.

jagibbons in reply to Milhouse. | October 21, 2025 at 8:47 am

Right. Most recently she said to treat black people like the physically disabled. Not sure which is worse, though.

Milhouse in reply to jagibbons. | October 21, 2025 at 3:57 pm

She didn’t even say that. She said that just as the physically disabled are unable to access buildings that haven’t been modified for their use, so black people are unable to access the electoral system unless it’s modified for them. She didn’t explain why this was so.

henrybowman in reply to Milhouse. | October 21, 2025 at 5:53 pm

Since there are no physical or legal barriers, that leaves only intellectual ones. The original point stands.

Milhouse in reply to Milhouse. | October 22, 2025 at 2:13 am

No, she seems to think it’s obviously “systemic racism”, which is a very convenient kind of racism because like dark matter you can’t see it or detect it with any instrument, but you just know it’s there.

A non British native teaching Cultural Marxism about a true British writer.

There are evil and good races, Men, Elves, Dwarves, Hobbits and Wizards ( who are not humans) all work to destroy evil.

GWB in reply to Skip. | October 21, 2025 at 8:31 am

Actually, there are good and evil people among most of the Free Races. I think only the Orcs are an entirely evil race.

None of this is at all new. They’ve been doing this since at least the ’70s. They did the same to Narnia and the Calormen.

Onyeka Nubia? Hmm….Nubia? How much more cutesy is that racist perfesser going to get? Surprised he isn’t trying to say the Balrog isn’t some kind of “oppressed minority” either. Write stupid books/essays, and teach time- and tuition money-wasting classes.

Looks like another Leftist racist, in this case a Black one, who would have us believe Britain was colonised by Whites, not a White country.

Surprised the Left hasn’t caught on to the religious “imagery”.

“The West” = Heaven
The forces of evil come from “The East”
And the battle between them is fought out in “Middle Earth”.

ztakddot in reply to Aarradin. | October 21, 2025 at 9:51 am

    Or what is happening today.

    Good = US
    Bad – China
Hopefully the battle will be fought in China – the middle kingdom.

Gamereg in reply to Dimsdale. | October 20, 2025 at 7:56 pm
In Return of the King, Frodo and Sam at one point are able to pass as orcs by dressing like them (in the movie the scene was saved for the extended version), so it appears there wasn’t a huge difference in size between regular orcs and hobbits.

Gamereg – in most (imho) popular works derivative of Tolkien’s world building – D&D or Warhammer Fantasy and 40k for example) Orcs and Orcish creatures encompass a spectrum of sizes, even when they don’t follow the WH meme of individual orcs evolving into bigger ones – if they live long and prosper enuf.

Since when disguised as fellow Orcs the Hobbits were never asked the equivalent of “Aren’t you too short to be a Storm Trooper?” I suspect there were not only the XXXL Orcs wandering around but also some pint-size ones as well.

I am sooo tired of the “deconstructing” phase! Why don’t these people do something constructive?!
Write your own fiction classic.
Build something beautiful.
Solve world hunger.
It seems perpetual anger eats away at them.

MAJack in reply to lc. | October 21, 2025 at 7:37 am

They are incapable of such things.

jagibbons in reply to lc. | October 21, 2025 at 9:01 am

Liberalism cannot construct. Like the devil (using Christian imagery), it can only attempt to copy and ultimately destroy. CS Lewis talks about this in Mere Christianity, Screwtape Letters and other writings. Just look at the so-called Summer of Love in 2020 for the perfect real-life example.

Does this mean that the foul orcish tongue was ebonics?

retiredcantbefired in reply to Eeyore. | October 21, 2025 at 2:00 pm

The orcs spoke an unapproved dialect of the Black Speech (or maybe it was a creole of the Black Speech).

The Black Speech is agglutinative and vaguely resembles a Turkic language (with added consonant clusters).

“Ash nazg durbatuluk” vs. “Ash nazg gimbatul” “Them all” vs. “them.”

Has anyone in Kazakhstan complained about it?

I would think Dr Nubia would have to do the hard part first before throwing accusations around

Did Tolkien exhibit racism in any letters to fellow Inklings, especially towards blacks?

Is there a record of any kind of racism present in his lectures at Oxford? Did any students protest that he maligned any racial group?

How did Nubian become a lecturer or prof at Univ of Nottingham if he just creates accusations without a foundation?

curly surfhouse | October 21, 2025 at 4:27 pm

This is not going to play well with millions and millions of fans…Hollywood has been doing this same thing for several years…calling fans racist and toxic for not liking the current crop of trash movies.

I was wondering when people would notice the racial insensitivity tone in LOTR. At least it is assuredly awkward to a post-modern reader that hates the idea of ‘racial purity.’

In LOTR the Elves are the master race who do everything better. Elves appear to be immortal and sail away to the blessed isle. Humans are ranked by their blood line distance from the elves. The elite of Gondor are the closest relatives to elves so they are whiter/taller and live longer than the other humans.

LOTR is written as an ancient epical tale. So all of that would not be abnormal in the ancient or medieval world. But for the post WW2 era it is what they call ‘cringe.’

The moron got his 15 minutes of fame. He is not worthy of notice.

Tolkien wrote myths about his homeland. He created histories and languages in a world populated with different races as men of the early 20th century understood race—not necessarily classified by skin color. Tolkien will long be remembered and his works cherished whilst those who seek to find fault deserve to die in obscurity.
