Zohran Mamdani Opposes Charter Schools in NYC, Despite Having Attended a Private School Himself

“The 33-year-old Queens assemblyman said he would fight efforts to open more charters, which largely educate minority, working-class students, and even opposed the schools sharing space in city-owned buildings.”

School choices for me, but not for thee.

Far left New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani opposes charter schools in the city, even though when he first came to the United States, he attended the Bank Street School for Children, which, according to Wikipedia, charges $37,554 – $68,793 annually in tuition.

From the New York Post:

Zohran Mamdani’s vow to declare war on charter schools if elected NYC mayor sparks outrage from parents, advocates: ‘Very misinformed’

Socialist Zohran Mamdani plans to declare war on charter schools if he’s elected mayor, according to a survey he answered — sparking outrage from advocates and parents who called the front-runner’s views “very misguided.”

The 33-year-old Queens assemblyman said he would fight efforts to open more charters, which largely educate minority, working-class students, and even opposed the schools sharing space in city-owned buildings.

“I oppose efforts by the state to mandate an expansion of charter school operations in New York City,” he said in a Staten Island Advance questionnaire before the June 24 Democratic primary.

Mamdani’s hostility to charter schools — which are privately run and publicly funded — puts him in sync with the United Federation of Teachers union, which endorsed him in the November general election following his primary victory over ex-Gov. Andrew Cuomo and others.

Charter schools are typically opposed by teacher unions because they correctly perceive them as competition for public schools, and as the Democrat candidate for mayor, Mamdani is counting on that union support.

It’s also important to note that the people who typically benefit the most from charter schools are minority students. Progressives won’t care. They’re just looking forward to all that free stuff Mamdani is promising them.

More from Just the News:

Parents and those in favor of charter schools are outraged, calling the assemblyman’s views “very misinformed,” explaining that he would be removing education opportunities from black and Hispanic students in low-income areas that he claims to represent.

Mamdani must support charter schools if he really cares about kids of color, Reverend Raymond Rivera, founder of the Family Life Academy charter school located in the Bronx said.

“I don’t understand why Mamdani would be hostile to charter schools. I think he’s very misinformed,” said Arlene Rosado, a mother who has a child in 10th grade attending Nuasin Next Generation K-12 charter school in the Bronx.

As the great scholar and historian Victor Davis Hanson has pointed out repeatedly in recent years, the trouble with today’s progressives is that they have no intention of living under the rules that they wish to impose on the rest of us.

If Mamdani and his wife eventually have children, does anyone expect that they will send them to New York City public schools?

Mamdani is a marxist, which is just modern era feudalism. They do not want the serfs to be educated, just indoctrinated.

A hypocritical Democrat socialist/communist?

I’m shocked!
Shocked, I tell you!

Someone like this ought to be ……

Use your imagination.

Can’t write what I think or else some nitwit will complain and I’ll be sent to the comment gulag for a period of time again.

I will say that someone like this makes me rethink all immigration, not just illegal and I’ve always supported legal immigration. We can make do with our existing population. We don’t need outsiders who don’t believe in American values or the American political system.

The plaque at the Statue of Liberty should be replaced with one that reads:
“Here stands Lady Liberty, shining her light upon the world to lift the darkness that rests upon it, so that all the world’s people can see their way to bringing freedom and justice to their own lands.”

If the people of the world yearn for liberty, let them make it so where they live. We’ve spent too much blood and treasure to let ours be inundated and drowned by people who don’t come here to share in our liberty, but to subvert it.

This guy couldn’t be more of a caricature of a fraud than if this was from the script of some bad streaming movie, which it kinda is. The real joke though is that the same idiots who voted for Obama will vote for him.

Republicans usually want school choice at all levels. Dems do nor want school choice at all levels as they are in bed with the Teachers Unions even though many Dem politicians have gone to private schools at all levels.

We lost 80K American servicemen between Korea and Vietnam fighting AGAINST Communism. Now a Communist stands to potentially become mayor of NYC.

Madness.

We lost Vietnam due to a large population of communists citizens in this country. That group has only gotten bigger. Once, the Democrat party could elect a President that was anti-communist. They couldn’t do it today. JFK would never get the nomination of the Democrat party today.

unions are the socialists foundations

they control the businesses ( until or unless the corporation shuts down)

they help with any “Street issues” the government might have

and charter schools while catering to minorities are really seen as another way for whites to directly educate their children away from that jungle fjb spoke about

“I oppose efforts by the state to mandate an expansion of charter school operations in New York City.”

Dems have raised a generation of ungovernables who reject democracy and democratic processes. Until recently, these disruptors have largely directed their operations against Republicans and other conservatives. But here we can see a retargeting of their own political hierarchy, as the “state” that Mamdani proposes to “oppose” was elected, and is run, by Democrats. They clearly make no distinction between parties when exercising their anti-democratic indoctrination. If the Democrats are ultimately successful, they will be consumed by their own act of arson.

“So much of left-wing thought is a kind of playing with fire by people who don’t even know that fire is hot.”
George Orwell

A good education for me, but not for thee. The money should follow each child. My grandchildren are getting a great K-8 intellectual and moral education at the local Catholic school – church membership not required – for less then half the average budgetary cost per pupil in my state for public education. (Their school is full.)

He wants the complete support of the teachers union, who themselves don’t want the competition of charter schools. It’s actually not a bad strategic move on his part.

The next Congress needs to pass legislation to ensure that an eligibility requirement for Federal K-12 tax dollars is that those $ follow the Student to the Ed program selected by the Parents. Reprogram all the ‘English as a second language’ and other program funds that support immigrant students and add those to the pot of $ flowing with Students.

Kind of want him to win. With luck and his wanting to cut the cops, not only would crime be rampant, but the moooslim men could start beating their liberal wives with impunity.
Maybe then some of the less maimed liberal women would realize life isn’t all fun and games with the fascists in charge and vote a bit differently the next time.

Marxism is only for the public, The Marxist does what pleases themselves

Again Black and Hispanic voters aren’t the ones supporting him, they are just going to be ones screwed over by his identity politics. It’s elitist white people and Asians who are bigot antisemites, along with self hating JINOs who love this jerk. None of those latter groups use charters they pay for expensive private schools like the one Mam-dingbat went to. Charter schools are hated by the elitist people because they are effective, are not under the complete control of the local school boards, and yes take public funds away from lousy public schools that are under-performing and failing. Parents of course love charter schools because they finally do what public schools have promised to do but failed at, actually educate their children. I lived in Louisiana and saw the charter school movement in the early 2000’s and it was incredible to watch what happens when you give parents a stake and key role in their kids education: everything changes for the better.
