U Chicago Investigates Prof Who Called School ‘Evil’ at Socialism Conference
“I love my life at the University of Chicago–my colleagues, my scholarship, and above all my students”
Who can blame the school for this? A private company would likely just fire an employee for doing such a thing.

U. Chicago investigates professor for calling school ‘evil,’ ‘colonial landlord’
The University of Chicago is looking into a professor’s “anti-university” comments made at the Socialism 2025 Conference early last month.
According to The Chicago Maroon, during a panel discussion regarding “revolutionary accompaniment,” Eman Abdelhadi (pictured) described her employer as “evil,” a “colonial landlord,” and a “police force.”
Abdelhadi said “Why would I organize here? I don’t care about this institution. Like I don’t — like f*** the University of Chicago […] Like, why would I put any of my political energy into this space? And I kind of had a moment of disdain for people who spent a lot of time doing that.”
A signatory to an open letter pledging “solidarity” with the “Palestinian resistance” shortly after the October 7, 2023 slaughter of over a thousand Israelis by Hamas, Abdelhadi told The Maroon conservative media had “mischaracterized” her conference remarks, and “clarified” that she believes UChicago should “wield its influence more responsibly.”
She also said she got a “barrage of hate” following her comments and “feared for [her] safety.”
In a statement, the university said it “is deeply committed to the values of academic freedom and the free expression of ideas, and for this reason does not limit the comments of faculty members, who speak for themselves and not for the University.”
But it added it expects its instructors “to advance scholarship and to teach our students to the highest standards of the profession.”
“I never said that I only stay at UChicago to build political power. I said that I hadn’t invested much activist energy in the institution in my early years, thinking it was likely stuck in its ways,” [Abdelhadi] wrote. “Over time, I came to see that faculty and staff can (and should) come together to call on UChicago to be a better local citizen, given its immense power in the city.”
“I was referring to building worker power through democratic institutions like the AAUP or the Council of the University of Senate, on which I serve as an elected member,” she added. “I love my life at the University of Chicago–my colleagues, my scholarship, and above all my students–and I have been an active member of the campus community as a result. I am confident in this University’s ability to handle criticism and disagreement and its commitment to free speech.”
