The LA Riots and the Left’s Treason

During this month’s LA riots, I happened to be in my native country of Bulgaria. Several major TV stations parroted the coverage of mainstream U.S. media, with a narrative closely reminiscent of The Babylon Bee’s incisive satire: “CNN Reports Peaceful Night in L.A. as Majority of Cars Not on Fire.”

Bulgarian media outlets are increasingly influenced by the propaganda of major Western media and are often partially sponsored by foreign NGOs that promote a leftist globalist agenda. Yet, numerous people of all walks of life continue to be staunchly pro-American. 

On June 14th, local news agencies reported that a man from the scenic little town of Aprilci in central Bulgaria, located in the heart of the Balkan mountain range, dispatched via diplomatic post a heartfelt gift on the occasion of President Trump’s 79th birthday: a variegated handwoven rug, fashioned from sheep’s wool with the help of a nearly two-centuries old loom. The rug, woven with extreme care and effort, bears Trump’s image, since the artist was inspired by Trump’s international policies. 

Such episodes of pro-American sentiments still abound in Eastern Europe but are extremely rare in Western European countries, despite the absurd positions embraced by the American left. These positions have now reached a point that defies any scintilla of logical reasoning.

People who suffer from Trump-derangement syndrome often exhibit symptoms of also Orban- and Netanyahu-derangement syndromes. They would rather see the West destroyed than support anything these leaders ever do. Victor Davis Hanson eloquently summarizes the Left’s tendency toward absurdity:

Russian “collusion,” “laptop” disinformation, and Joe Biden “fit as a fiddle” gaslighting were utter lies. But more recently, the hard Left lost its mind championing a host of violent, unsavory characters…. Garcia … was constructed as a family man engaged in construction to feed his family, who somehow forgot to become “documented” and was deported…. Luigi Mangione was a rich, spoiled kid who dabbled in Jacobin politics…. Instantly, some on the Left embraced Mangione as a revolutionary hero who delivered justice to a supposedly greedy corporate capitalist.

Mohammed Sabry Soliman, like Garcia, was a violent illegal alien. He bragged about his hatred of Jews in general and Israel in particular. So Soliman made some Molotov cocktails and tried to incinerate Jewish marchers advocating on behalf of Israeli hostages still held by Hamas…. In the mind of the mainstream liberal media, the Soliman family was cruelly detained by the evil Donald Trump administration that was considering returning the illegal aliens to their Middle East homes….

But recently, during the LA riots, the Left went completely crazy as the entire Democrat Party and California state officials sided with violent protesters and illegal aliens. The open border rioters soon got the message that left-wing California officials were on their side. So, throngs began burning cars. Illegal aliens waved Mexican flags and burned American flags.Protesters spat on law enforcement and pelted them with rocks, firecrackers, and concrete blocks. Stores were looted. Critical freeways were swarmed and shut down.

And for what?

To protest the legal efforts of U.S. Immigration of Customs Enforcement to serve deportation warrants to a few hundred of some 10 million-12 million illegal aliens who had illegally swarmed into the U.S. during the Joe Biden administration’s four-year destruction of immigration law.

Things have clearly gone too far when a major political party in a given country and its acolytes openly support lawless riots and rejoice in the burning of their nation’s flag and the waving of a foreign flag amid vandalism and violence. This is tantamount to treason.

In his witty fable titled “The Peacelike Mongoose,” James Thurber once wrote: “REASON is six-sevenths of TREASON.” Utilizing clever wordplay, Thurber coined this catchy phrase to describe a false accusation of treason against the “peacelike mongoose,” who was punished by his community for refusing to conform. The mongoose explained that his refusal to fight cobras was prompted by reason, but that was interpreted as a traitorous excuse for cowardice. While the treason mentioned in the mongoose fable was a made-up accusation to punish dissent, in the case of the LA riots, the traitorous attitude of the Left is quite real. 

Former Democrat presidents like FDR, JFK, or Truman and their supporters did not hate America. The treasonous anti-Americanism of the current Left, however, has lost any semblance of reason. Thurber’s fable concludes with the moral:

Ashes to ashes, and clay to clay, if the enemy doesn’t get you, your own folks may.
