Pennsylvania Saves “Clean Energy” Maryland from Spanish-Style Blackout during “Heat Dome”
Meanwhile, clean energy policies in Maryland contribute to rising electricity prices in Pennsylvania.
As I noted in my article discussing a lawsuit against energy companies asserting they are to blame for heat waves, abundant and inexpensive energy is critical to human health and happiness.
It turns out “clean energy” Maryland is now making this discovery.
Pennsylvania State Senator Kristin Phillips-Hill (R-York) noted in a Facebook post that surplus electricity from Pennsylvania was sent to Maryland during the peak demand period as temperatures in the region neared 100°F. She attributed the avoidance of a blackout crisis in Maryland to Pennsylvania’s reliable power grid, referring to Maryland as the “neighbor with green energy initiatives.”
Just a friendly note to our “green energy” neighbor – Maryland: You’re welcome. During this heat wave, Maryland consumers demand a lot more energy than it generates. If it was not for Pennsylvania – it would be lights out and air conditioning off.
This is another reminder that Maryland should work on supporting (and not shutting down) baseload energy generation rather than require farmers in Southern York County to give up pristine farmland to construct more transmission lines.

So, it looks like Pennsylvania saved Maryland from a Spanish-style blackout. Zero Hedge’s Tyler Durden has a fairly robust assessment of the root cause of Maryland’s energy woes.
At the heart of the crisis is the state’s Democratic leadership, which has masqueraded as efficient managers but are, in reality, far-left climate Marxists. Disastrous “green” policies are plunging the state into yet another crisis.
Maryland needs to wake up to the reality that local elections matter. Power bills are spiraling out of control because Democrats in the state are more focused on Marxist-style reparations schemes to fleece taxpayers, overtaxing residents, having margaritas with illegal aliens, diverting public funds to migrants, pushing radical woke agendas, attempting to install condom machines in elementary schools, and advancing degrowth green policies.
How bad are Maryland’s energy policies?. They are ponderous, indeed.
Maryland has set ambitious clean energy goals to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and transition to a more sustainable energy future. Central to these efforts is the Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS), which requires electricity suppliers to source 50% of their power from renewable resources by 2030. Recent updates to the RPS exclude trash incineration from qualifying as renewable, ensuring only zero-emission technologies contribute to the state’s targets.
To further advance its climate commitments, Maryland enacted the Climate Solutions Now Act, aiming for a 60% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2031 and net zero emissions by 2045. The state is also moving toward a Clean Power Standard, which would require all electricity consumed in Maryland to come from clean and renewable sources by 2035. These policies are supported by new laws such as the Abundant, Affordable Clean Energy (AACE) Act and the Renewable Energy Certainty Act (RECA), which streamline renewable energy project development and set aggressive solar energy deployment targets.
Additional measures include updated building energy performance standards to boost efficiency and the integration of many economically destructive environmental justice and labor standards into clean energy projects. Truly, these plans are a recipe for disaster.
Unfortunately for Red States exporting energy, they are connected to the grid of the energy deficient regions ruled by climate cultists. Electricity costs are rising for residents throughout Pennsylvania, with the average household potentially facing an increase of $20 to $30 on their bills. Several Pennsylvania legislators attribute these price hikes to what they describe as poor energy policies enacted in Maryland and neighboring states.
“I think it’s going to become very difficult for people who use PPL, but this is part of a broader issue,” said York County Republican Senator Kristin Phillips-Hill.
…As a whole, Maryland doesn’t generate enough power to keep the lights on itself. Instead, it’s relying on Pennsylvania and other states in the PJM grid for 40% of its electricity.
“Not only are we generating the power and bear the burden of generating power, but we bear the burden of eminent domain taking our land to build these high voltage transmission line projects. We also pay for that infrastructure in PA to get that energy to a place where people are refusing to do the right thing,” Phillips-Hill said. “They’re living in a green energy fantasy land.”
If this sort of state-level experimentation continues, don’t be surprised if Pennsylvania and other Red States take a page from Norway’s playbook.
Norway, historically a major electricity exporter due to its abundant hydropower, is now reconsidering its approach to energy interconnection with other countries, particularly those in Europe. The opening of large interconnectors with the UK and Germany in 2021 led to significant price spikes for Norwegian consumers, especially in southern regions. High electricity prices have become a major political issue, prompting the government to subsidize up to 90% of household bills at times.
The nation is now rejecting any new interconnector proposals before 2029.
Unintended Blue State consequences tend to spread to Red States. This is something to keep in mind when laughing over Blue State woes.
Look, I’m not here to die on the hill of SALT deductions. I don’t care that much.
What I do care about is this: letting America’s greatest cities slide into Marxist hellholes of misery, despair, and violence is letting the devil win.

Green energy morons really need to be forced to live with what they say they want.
Congratulations on humorous headline. Probably a coal fired plant.
“Just a friendly note to our “green energy” neighbor – Maryland: You’re welcome.” Made me smile.
Wouldn’t their legislation necessarily make it against the law to rely on their neighbor States energy, even in a time of crises, as it would conflict with State law?
Wouldn’t their local power companies have a great case?
Is there any reason why energy exported out of state can’t be tariffed? Oh officially that’s contrary to the Constitution (Article I, § 10, clause 2) but surely cost recovery for the infrastructure necessary to supply that power is lawful? Or is it deliberately designed as a common market whereby those supplying the power are also required to pay for the cost of supplying that power and those who benefit from the power get a discount as mass consumers rather than suppliers?

Trump proven wrong for having called out israel for defending itself AFTER iran launched missiles murdering at lest 3 more ::
Iran fired ballistic missiles at U.S. bases in Qatar and Iraq on Monday, according to reports from the region, though the missiles were apparently intercepted without doing damage.

Don’t expect MD to come to its senses anytime soon. The voters of the three big countries (Montgomery, Princes Georges and Baltimore) are so far Left that MD might as well be CA Atlantic.
Then let them sweat in the dark.

Simple solution: define nuclear energy as clean and renewable. Because it is.
I responded to a Pepco email survey a year or so ago, by telling the company to start investing in nuclear power, and, stop investing in utterly ridiculous, inconsequential, unreliable and virtue-signaling “green” energy stunts such as solar and wind power generation.
The problem with a number of states like Maryland is that the people voting for the politicians doing this stuff are the ones that don’t pay for any of it as they live on government assistance. Electric bills can go up 100% and they don’t care as it cost’s them not a dime.
The use of eminent domain to seize property in State A to benefit State B doesn’t seem like a reasonable use. There’s plenty of rail lines interconnecting the States. Plus Interstate highways. Plus existing transmission lines between States. These projects can use the existing easements. Might cost more as the route may not be ideal. IMO the requirement of seeking to invoke eminent domain should be project must provide local common benefit like installing water or sewer systems and that the bulk of the benefits accrue to the areas where property is seized. Eminent domain should be used as a last resort when there’s no other alternative, not b/c a particular route is less costly but b/c there’s no option like an easement of necessity for a property without road frontage to gain access to the roadway for egress and ingress.
“Heat Dome”…
Here in Texas we call it “Wednesday”.
Nope. I’ve been in South Texas in summer. You fellers call it a week.
I am from California born in the late 50s as was my wife. The state did not start it slide down until after Reagan left as Governor. It is massively worse with Newsom. Me and my family was moved by business to the southeast in 96.
Heat in California and Arizona (where my grandparents are from) are hot, but heat in Atlanta with the humidity was unlike me and my family had never faced. I spent summers from the time I was 4 to 13 working with my Grandfather in Tucson doing Lawn service in 115 degree heat, but weather in the southeast was worse with the humidity. I cannot say what heat is up in Pennsylvania or Maryland, but when I have visited DC it was not that bad but it was decades ago.
California got rid of some of their Nuclear Plants and their Hydro-electro Dams, which did not make sense when states need more not less power. Georgia added Nuclear power plants in the past year.
Yeah. Folks unfamiliar with humidity + heat in the deep South find out by the first week of June that summers in less humid places didn’t prep them for it. Those that move down here just about give up by August. If they make it the first summer then they have an entire year to acclimate. The humidity +heat can be very oppressive to those unused to it. I grew up with it and speaking for myself, its like the warm embrace of a mother’s love… with the exception of late August…when it feels like Mom might be trying to smother you.
Grew up in East County San Diego during Reagan years now live in Pa. Much prefer Cali. heat👍left 4 years ago before alien invasion on border hit its max, never goin* back
For NE TN they are telling residents to conserve.
I went on to their FB post requesting residents dial down their consumption and said….
NOPE… I’m cranking the AC as cool as it will go. The TVA deliberately set us up to have less power, I’m going try as hard as I can to crash the grid through consumption.
Pennsylvania providing excess electrical power to Maryland did prevent a blackout but does Maryland’s government understand the consequences of their Green Energy policies? If I read the map correctly, New Jersey, Virginia, and Ohio in addition to Maryland are all operating short of needed electrical power. I hope that the powers that be in these various states wake up and smell the coffee. The villagers will be upset if they are left sweating in the dark all for the cause of furthering Green Energy.
“Don’t they understand the consequences of Green Energy”?
That question is irrelevant because the point of green energy is not to conserve energy nor is it to reduce emissions. We all know nuclear energy is both clean and plentiful — and would immediately solve the saving the Earth “crisis” — but the Greenies immediately dismiss it as a non-starter. Why? you may ask…
Nuclear provides cheap energy — and cheap energy makes it economically unfeasible for people to spend money on energy saving measures such as insulation, solar panels, wind farms, geothermal, etc. All of these industries are an extremely profitable revenue stream making Wall Street and DC millions upon millions of dollars every day. Now if that were to disappear, then a lot of million dollar zip codes would be in a depression. Then they would have to figure out what they would have to do to make people willingly pay for their services instead of being forced to under government compulsion.
Cheap energy therefore cannot be permitted. Too many people would lose their livelihood.
I’ve never heard this argument before. It makes sense to me except for “insulation”.
Problem is those clowns in Md. never have to bear any responsibility for their voting.
Don’t count on michigan to add a bunch to the system. Our fat ugly democrat witches – with a b instead of a w – are big on green energy.
The signs to end pipeline 5 going under the Straits are all over from the liberal north.
The pipeline (federal treaty) goes under the Straits of Mackinaw down to the thumb and over to Canada. Apparently to fuel the freighters going back and forth delivering goods to the Great Lakes ports.
Pipeline company wants to tunnel under the straits for the new pipeline which would be entirely in the tunnel in case of a leak so the Straits won’t have a spill ruin the water.
wHitler is fighting tooth and nail to take the pipeline out completely.
And the farmland being used for solar panels is ugly and stupid. Not to mention the windmill mania.
