DHS Disputes Story of Denial of Prenatal Care to Pregnant Illegal in ICE Custody
“Iris Dayana Monterroso-Lemus, 37, is a citizen of Guatemala who has been arrested multiple times for child abuse and is wanted on an active warrant for homicide.”
It seems like nearly every week, the left and the MSM latch on to stories about alleged incidents involving ICE agents and illegal immigrants that they think prove their points about the supposed wrongness of immigration sweeps.
More often than not, however, the story we’ve been given is an incomplete one, presented without context, as was the case in the news piece on a U.S. citizen who was arrested and briefly detained during an Alabama immigration sweep last month, only to find out that, according to DHS, the man was trying to obstruct a co-worker’s arrest.
As Legal Insurrection has reported, they have also falsely claimed young children who were U.S. citizens were deported out of the country, even though the real story was that their mothers were deported and chose to take them with them.
The latest example of a story that doesn’t quite pass the smell test comes from a site called the Nashville Banner, which published a story in late May where every claim came from a pregnant Guatemalan-born illegal immigrant detainee and her alleged boyfriend, who is an American citizen.
In a nutshell, the claim is that Iris Dayana Monterroso-Lemus, a mother of 6, lost her unborn child while in ICE custody because she was allegedly denied prenatal care, and basic needs were unmet.
Not a single allegation made in the story has been corroborated, but the purported non-profit news outlet ran with it anyway, and so have the Usual Suspects like Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-WA):
A pregnant woman lost her baby after ICE refused to give her prenatal care.
She begged for help and was denied. She was fed food full of cockroaches. She was forced to sleep on the floor.
This is absolutely disgusting and we should all be outraged. https://t.co/AtYPFMfZ6z

Is this what you wanted, @StephenM?
A mother who was 5 months pregnant – who'd just found out she and her American citizen fiancee were having a boy – lost her baby after federal agents in a detention center repeatedly denied her pleas for prenatal care.

As one might expect, however, DHS is once again pushing back, providing more info on Monterroso-Lemus and her situation:
Absolutely FALSE. She had FULL medical, prenatal care. We have documentation to show it.
Iris Dayana Monterroso-Lemus, 37, is a citizen of Guatemala who has been arrested multiple times for child abuse and is wanted on an active warrant for homicide.
On Thursday, DHS provided more documentation to counter the claims that the pregnant detainee had not received prenatal care:
CLAIM: “They didn’t give me medical attention, nowhere, not in Louisiana, not in Alabama.”
FALSE: She received prenatal care, including an ultrasound and OB-GYN visit, dental care, and medication. She was also admitted to a hospital and saw multiple nurses.
CLAIM: “Asked for ultrasound and only tested for blood pressure and urine.”
FALSE: She received prenatal care including a fetal doppler ultrasound.
CLAIM: “Thought she was having a stroke, but they didn’t give her medical exam.”
FALSE: As soon as she identified the distress on April 29, ICE provided immediate medical assistance.
CLAIM: “Begged to go to hospital, but was told no.”
FALSE: ICE sent her to a hospital immediately to receive medical care.
[…]
Monterroso-Lemus was arrested twice for child abuse/neglect with the Loudon County Sheriff’s Office. She also has an active warrant for homicide in Guatemala.
DHS also noted that “Monterroso-Lemus entered the country illegally in 2018 and was deported back to Guatemala on May 9, 2025” where, presumably, she’ll remain.

Poor kid never had a chance, did s/he?
I’m not surprised at the media narrative. It’s 2025. If the media told me the sun came over the horizon, I’d go out expecting to see the opposite.
They’re lying liars who lie.
Now Democrats are calling fetuses babies, now they care about them?
Boo hoo. Life is all about taking chances and making choices. I can’t be bothered with those who “choose poorly”.
I don’t care. Get the sub humans the hell out of my country
How’s the alleged boyfriend taking it? Is there some doubt as to his being a boy, a friend, or both?
deny the care and let the dems pay for it directly
WHY DOES THE GOP CONSTANTLY FAIL US WHILE THE DEMS DO AS THEY PLEASE!!?!?!??!!!!!!
if she needs care let her get it at home
Miscarriage due to drug use? Poor nutrition?
I don’t care. Not worth investigating, it’s over.
the story we’ve been given is an incomplete one
Most often it’s nothing more than the reports of someone or even hearsay. “Believe all immigrants” or something. If someone says something bad about Trump or Republicans or their policies or the execution thereof, it must be true. After all,
SatanTrump is the Father Of Lies, right?purported non-profit news outlet
So, a Dem shill group? Funded by a NGO?
Now that I think about it, CNN is technically a non-profit news outlet, right now….
This is absolutely disgusting and we should all be outraged.
We ARE all outraged… by you, Pramila.
From the Favreau tweet:
Begged to be deported so at least she could get prenatal care in Guatemala.
I call MAJOR BULLS**T on that one. You think they wouldn’t slap her on the first plane home if she said that? They’d have her in front of an immigration judge to confirm her self-deport status so fast the baby would still be spinning when she landed in Guatemala.
When your party is nothing more than the official mouthpiece for the criminal class in America, it’s easy to go snow-blind to niceties like child abuse convictions and murder warrants. Because everybody has stuff like that on their sheet… don’t they?
As long as there is a market for self deception there will be purveyors who busily go after these fools. Let them! They deserve each other, and are not worth any time or energy to rebut. Nowadays they are mostly inconsequential. Accordingly, beware of those who try to stir up our righteous indignation about them, because their motives are also suspect.
