Trump’s Latest Order Axes Federal Funding From NPR, PBS

Trump’s Latest Order Axes Federal Funding From NPR, PBS

Good.

President Donald Trump signed an executive order late Thursday night that eliminates federal funding for NPR and PBS.

The EO says:

National Public Radio (NPR) and the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) receive taxpayer funds through the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB). Unlike in 1967, when the CPB was established, today the media landscape is filled with abundant, diverse, and innovative news options. Government funding of news media in this environment is not only outdated and unnecessary but corrosive to the appearance of journalistic independence.

At the very least, Americans have the right to expect that if their tax dollars fund public broadcasting at all, they fund only fair, accurate, unbiased, and nonpartisan news coverage. No media outlet has a constitutional right to taxpayer subsidies, and the Government is entitled to determine which categories of activities to subsidize. The CPB’s governing statute reflects principles of impartiality: the CPB may not “contribute to or otherwise support any political party.” 47 U.S.C. 396(f)(3); see also id. 396(e)(2).

The CPB fails to abide by these principles to the extent it subsidizes NPR and PBS. Which viewpoints NPR and PBS promote does not matter. What does matter is that neither entity presents a fair, accurate, or unbiased portrayal of current events to taxpaying citizens.

Trump also directed other agencies to find and terminate “any direct or indirect funding of NPR and PBS.”

That includes any “grants, contracts, or other funding instruments.”

Cue the mournful wails.

There may have been a time when PBS and NPR were worth supporting with federal funds. A time when it was harder to get information. But in today’s day and age we no longer need to support these organizations. When people need to know what is going on the only ones getting that news from PBS or NPR are people who choose too.

And quite frankly I trust some stranger on the street to give me more accurate and fair news than these people.

All of these Trump executive orders will be reversed under the next Democrat President. This is what happens when you govern by executive orders instead of legislation.

Why do you think there should be a taxpayer-funded entity like CPB?

That is indeed true…and that is why we support a team effort where the coach makes the call at the behest of what the fans want.

barry soetoro was the queen of executive order. THAT’S the way he (?) *governed.*. “I’ve got a pen and a phone.”

biden, as we all know didn’t govern at all. He just had (unelected) staff that ran wild with the autopen.

You must have a really really short memory.

    unfortunattely! you’re 100% correct
    he has to push Congress (it should only happen) to turn these EOS into laws;
besides which, EOs only make him look more and more like an emperor
(BTW: I voted for him and, should he run for a third term (in reality, only his second), I’d vote for him again)

You are correct, but that would never happen, especially in the Senate.

You have no idea what the political climate will be if a Democrat becomes president sometime in the future. Or if some og these executive actions will be followed by legislation. It’s only about TDS for you.

What is your purpose? What are you seeking to accomplish by comments that almost always sound the same, an out of tune chord?

Pay attention. This is one of those unusual times when JR actually makes sense. Congress needs to codify most of Trump’s EOs or they will be too easily reversed if a Dimocrat is sent to the White House.

The GOP in Congress is full of simps like you and Danny, JR. Congress should do it, but too many Republicans are more concerned about the next election and being controlled opposition instead of doing what they promise to do every 2 or 6 years.

Congress can’t complete a freaking jigsaw puzzle.
If all I can get is four, eight, twelve years, I’ll take what I can get.
Besides, as we saw from Joe Biden, it’s easy to slash a program created by the last president, but not so easy to recreate a program slashed by the last president. Re-establishing border security and energy independence is going to be a bear. Burning down USAID was easier than falling off a log.

I’d far rather have Congress act on all of this than Trump doing it by EO’s that can be buried on the first day of the next President. Congress needs to get in gear and do it’s job

Funding for NPR and PBS doesn’t make me lose sleep. Now eliminating withholding taxes from paychecks… that is an executive order for the ages to protect the taxpayer.

Long overdue. That ~50% of taxpaying Americans who are conservative are forced to fund these despicable, lazy, dishonest and dutifully water-carrying Dhimmi-crat propaganda organs/mouthpieces/shills is totally galling.

Congress needs to get back to doing its job, making budgets and zeroing out CPB/PBS/NPR.

and this is the problem:::

“Americans have the right to expect that if their tax dollars fund public broadcasting at all, they fund only fair, accurate, unbiased, and nonpartisan news coverage. No media outlet has a constitutional right to taxpayer subsidies, ”

YOU SHOULD NOT EXPECT IT b/c then THAT opens us up to the same politics of ..”oh we are fair unbaised” etc
which is always an opinion no matter what side you take

You cant allow the expectations to even exist

no money
zero
to anything other than the military courts treasury

1) Public funding of the press – any of the press – is contra the spirit of the first amendment. We should keep the press separated from government in the same way we separate religion.

2) If PBS is as worthwhile as they claim, they should be perfectly capable of self-funding just as any other media outlet is. They should not be protected from the free market.

3) I used to listen/watch PBS/NPR religiously when I was in college. Either I have drifted away from them or their product has drifted away from me. Perhaps both but I watch/listen to zero public content today.

Now is the time for this Administration to set its sights on the ACLU. Check out this article from January 7, 2003. Go after the Ford Foundation and Soros next!

While I applaud this EO I;m positive a lawsuit has already been queued up (for the children) and a progressive judge chosen. In fact since it is likely that all progressive judges watch and listen to public broadcasting I wouldn’t be surprised if one of them files the suit.

I’ve lived through four Republican presidencies who promised to do this and never even TRIED. That’s including the previous administration of the one who is doing it now.

” We have majorities in both houses, use them.”
*******
All Senate Dems. +- 2 GOPe will block codifying Trump EOs….MAGA is far short of the 60 Senate votes needed for passage.

Today I got an email from Alabama Public Broadcasting with a prefilled message that I could add my identifying information to and send it to my senators and congressman begging to not defund PBS. I deleted the default message and added my own, stating that public broadcasting should no be funded by the government but should rely on local funding to reflect local points of view. I hope Pubic Broadcasting enjoys sending my modified message to Ms. Britt, Coach Tuberville, and Mr. Palmer.

Yeah, we used to do that trick to gun control organization “online petitions” all the time. Eventually they got smart and made their messages 100% canned.

There’s plenty of well to.do to wealthy leftists who can dip deeper into their own pockets to fund these lefty propaganda outfits posing as media. We are well beyond the era of only 3 broadcast channels or lack of alternative sources for news/events on TV/Radio so ‘access’ arguments are moot.
