Dartmouth Student Workers Strike Over Pay and Conditions

“Organizers say the strike is about more than just their jobs.”

Striking is the main reason that college student workers pushed for unionization. Granting it was a huge mistake.

Student workers at Dartmouth strike over pay, conditions

Student workers at Dartmouth College went on strike Monday over pay and working conditions.

The Student Worker Collective represents about 300 dining workers and residential advisers.

They are demanding a pay raise to $23 an hour, protections from job automation and a clear policy that would prevent ICE agents from entering college buildings without a warrant. It comes amid the Trump administration’s crackdown on illegal immigration.

Organizers say the strike is about more than just their jobs.

“We are still an independent student-run rank-and-file union and we believe that our organizing here on campus has the ability to improve the working conditions and lives of all students, whether or not they are unionized,” said Hosaena Tilahun, a senior at Dartmouth.

The college said their main dining halls and cafes will not be impacted by the strike, but said hours may be reduced on nights and weekends at some smaller cafes.
