U.S., Ukraine Sign Rare Minerals Deal

U.S., Ukraine Sign Rare Minerals Deal

Ukraine gives U.S. access in exchange for continued support against Russia.

President Donald Trump’s administration signed a rare minerals deal with Ukraine in exchange for support against Russia.

“Thanks to President Trump’s tireless efforts to secure a lasting peace, I am glad to announce the signing of today’s historic economic partnership agreement between the United States and Ukraine establishing the United States-Ukraine Reconstruction Investment Fund,” said U.S. Secretary of the Treasury Scott Bessent in an emailed statement. “As the President has said, the United States is committed to helping facilitate the end of this cruel and senseless war. This agreement signals clearly to Russia that the Trump Administration is committed to a peace process centered on a free, sovereign, and prosperous Ukraine over the long term. President Trump envisioned this partnership between the American people and the Ukrainian people to show both sides’ commitment to lasting peace and prosperity in Ukraine. And to be clear, no state or person who financed or supplied the Russian war machine will be allowed to benefit from the reconstruction of Ukraine.”

America gets access to over 20 raw minerals along with oil and natural gas. From Fox News:

The U.S. is seeking access to more than 20 raw materials deemed strategically critical to its interests, including some non-minerals such as oil and natural gas. Among them are Ukraine’s deposits of titanium, which is used for making aircraft wings and other aerospace manufacturing, and uranium, which is used for nuclear power, medical equipment and weapons.

Ukraine also has lithium, graphite and manganese, which are used in electric vehicle batteries.

The deal will establish an equal partnership between the two countries and last for 10 years. Financial contributions to a joint fund would be made in cash, and only new U.S. military aid would count toward the American share.

Ukrainian Economy Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko announced the deal on X:

Thanks to the leadership and agreements between President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and President Donald Trump, Secretary of the Treasury Scott Bessant and I signed the agreement between Ukraine and the United States to establish the United States–Ukraine-Ukraine Reconstruction Investment Fund.

I thank everyone who contributed to this Agreement and helped make it stronger. This document is capable of delivering success for both our countries — Ukraine and the United States.

God bless Ukraine and God bless the United States of America.

Trump made it known for months that he was tired of America giving Ukraine billions for nothing.

Trump demanded access to rare minerals in Ukraine in exchange for our continuing help.

Finally

This questioned was asked at the 100 day cabinet meeting today, loved Bessants answer, he said it would be likely today with a twinkle in his eye and a lovely smirk on his face

He so hates these stupid a$$ clowns in the legacy media

With good reason

” And to be clear, no state or person who financed or supplied the Russian war machine will be allowed to benefit from the reconstruction of Ukraine.”
Good!

I’m inclined to think Trump is using the deal to box Putin into a corner so that he’ll have no choice but to agree to a peace deal. With American firms starting to move into the Ukraine pursuant to the deal, Putin likely now realizes that any attacks involving them will not be tolerated by Trump.

Probably should block those who sought to exploit Ukraine that were nominally on the ‘side of Ukraine’ from making profits as well. Don’t reward any of the globalist neocon grifters who stirred the pot in the Donbas that served as even partial motivation real or imagined for Russia to move to halt it.

And we really think Ukraine will actually honor the deal? If yes, for how long? Color me skeptical.

    Why not honor the deal?
Especially after the War, because even prior Ukraine didn’t have the money and resources to properly develop those resources – so the new income they’ll be getting will be Found Money for them – badly needed to rebuild and rearm.

As it stood the undeveloped resources just made them a bigger target for Russia – which you can bet your @ss Putin intended to have Russia and his own cronies benefit from after and never Ukraine.

The cherry on top is once US companies are involved in Ukraine the US will have skin in the game – any further Russian adventurism won’t be able to count on a President Harris or Ocasio Cortez to easily repudiate a Trump guarantee of support without blowback.

The likely characters will find something to criticize. If only they had something positive to offer, but it’s the negatives that seem to excite them.

This deal may finally get Putin to the table for real, Time to box him in and choke off his money.

Why would Putin end the war over this? Ukraine is barely able to avoid further retreat. If US military aid is turned off Ukraine will be at a clear disadvantage. No US taxpayers wants to fund the defence of Ukraine.

This action today is probably not the only moving part, but just a start.

Not sure what you are asking. Getting to the table is not ending the war. As the screws get tighter, Putin may come to grips that he will not get all of Ukraine, and he has also has much to lose. Or are you advocating for him to forge ahead and continue the decimation? Perhaps an off ramp has arrived.

Because the valuable leases are at the east end of the country. Putin can’t advance any further without rolling his treads over Americans.

Russia Jas largely accomplished its aims. They wanted the four provinces in the Donbas region. They got them and those rear have about 40% of the total deposits of these minerals which Ukraine used to have.

This way Russia basically keeps what holds, probably with recognition that Crimea is Russian at minimum. Ukraine gets to stand up after their curb stomping instead of Russia rolling them over and continuing the assault. Russia can declare victory and frankly moving out of the Donbas where the population speaks Russian and has some affinity for Russia would necessitate a brutal and bloody insurgency. Best to avoid that.Ukraine gets a deal on remaining minerals that offers a kinda/sorta security guarantee which helps them rebuild and probably deters more fighting.

10 years? The processing won’t even have spun up by the time the deal is over. So we’re just financing the extraction efforts for the despot of a decade on from now. (It won’t be Z, he’s toast.)

scaulen in reply to UnCivilServant. | May 1, 2025 at 9:39 am

Get the short term deal done right away so that US companies and their security teams can get inside the borders which forces Putin to stop his attacks. When that dust settles, start working on a long time commitment. As long as pro Russian doesn’t get elected this should be a long time commitment to keep the wolves at bay.

UnCivilServant in reply to scaulen. | May 1, 2025 at 12:23 pm

      I’d rather not.

I’d sooner give up all of Ukraine than risk getting bogged down in that quagmire or worse.

scaulen in reply to UnCivilServant. | May 1, 2025 at 3:43 pm

I agree, but it is a good template to use elsewhere, let us have access for American companies and you’ll fall under our umbrella without actually having to put troops in. Should start offering this deal to the African nations that China is pressuring with their new silk road initiative.

US voters walked away a long time ago. This agreement is worth less than the paper it could be printed on. The military industrial complex will benefit.

Umbras and penumbras.

The Gentle Grizzly | April 30, 2025 at 8:35 pm

Text comes ground troops military advisors in order to protect American interests.

Everything fo4 Trump is a deal, and this is a bargaining position.

Ugh. I really dont want to be involved in Ukraine. If this deal is real we are going to get drawn into this quagmire whether we want to or not,

mailman in reply to ztakddot. | May 1, 2025 at 6:11 am

Actually this is good because it cuts off the EU from those rare earth minerals and fossil fuels that they desperately need to keep their lights on and their EV cars running!

Its also good news because Russia understands who they are dealing with and the consequences for attacking American interests that will now be arriving in the Ukraine to extract the deal.

In the past, yeah, Id be concerned with an administration incapable of taking strong action when its actually required but here now, with adults back in charge its a very different game that Russia would be playing.

Finally, it is only America pushing for this war to come to an end. Europe cant even defend their own borders and are irrelevant…and have made themselves irrelevant.

So the american taxpayers will be forking over $100 billion per year to fund ukraine defense, while an american company makes maybe $1 billion per year in mining profits?

CommoChief in reply to smooth. | May 1, 2025 at 5:53 pm

Welcome to international economics as presented by globalist neocons. Don’t forget the $ will be used to buy mostly US made weapons and equipment from neocon aligned defense companies as a condition of ‘giving’ it. Never bet against the defense contractors getting their slice of the pie.

After throwing a fit in the Oval Office Zelensky caves?

I really hope they declare peace and he has to restore elections.
