EU Pauses Retaliatory Tariffs on U.S. Goods
“While finalising the adoption of the EU countermeasures that saw strong support from our Member States, we will put them on hold for 90 days.”

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen wrote on X that the bloc will pause retaliatory tariffs on US goods after President Donald Trump placed a 90-day pause.
Von der Leyen wrote:

If negotiations are not satisfactory, our countermeasures will kick in.
Preparatory work on further countermeasures continues.
As I have said before, all options remain on the table.

Von der Leyen wrote on X when Trump implemented the pause:
I welcome President Trump’s announcement to pause reciprocal tariffs. It’s an important step towards stabilizing the global economy.
Clear, predictable conditions are essential for trade and supply chains to function.
Tariffs are taxes that only hurt businesses and consumers. That’s why I’ve consistently advocated for a zero-for-zero tariff agreement between the European Union and the United States.
The European Union remains committed to constructive negotiations with the United States, with the goal of achieving frictionless and mutually beneficial trade.
At the same time, Europe continues to focus on diversifying its trade partnerships, engaging with countries that account for 87% of global trade and share our commitment to a free and open exchange of goods, services, and ideas.
Finally, we are stepping up our work to lift barriers in our own single market. This crisis has made one thing clear: in times of uncertainty, the single market is our anchor of stability and resilience.
My team and I will continue to work day and night to protect European consumers, workers and businesses. Together, Europeans will emerge stronger from this crisis.

The EU never released a list of items on the tariff list. CNBC claimed it viewed a document listing “clothing, poultry, grains, machinery and more.”
Trump planned for 25% tariffs on steel, aluminum, and automobiles. The EU also received a 20% tariff rate “on almost all goods as part of the sweeping duties announced last week.”

They already have some high tariffs and trade barriers even before this all started.
LOL! There was a 1 in 1 chance of this outcome turning out.
boo hoo europe
boo hoo
you want to hate america
but we save you all the time
youve been (temporarily?) saved
pay up
respect your superiors
America really does not need EU for anything.
They saw what happened to China.
They are learning that Trump doesn’t bluff unlike weak-kneed Biden who whispered, “Don’t.” And then when they did, he did nothing.
There’s more to the China angle: The EU knows that China will dump its products in any country that will take them to make up for the shortfall to the US market. They don’t want that at all because we will protect ourselves against China using the EU as a middleman for their products, by way of tariffs against those countries. That leaves the EU with little to negotiate with, hence one of the reasons for the EU Commissioner’s “magnanimous” gesture.
That’s good info. Thanks.
Nicely written. China has been using Viet Name and another SE Asian country to route their exports to the US and the West. Europe sure doesn’t want to take their place. This should cut out Mexico as a middleman as well.
No Vietnam is an enemy of China please do some of the most basic pretenses of research before shoving absurdities out as a reason to go back to murdering our economy.
Thank god Donald J Trump does not agree with you and went with the off ramp to a policy that never should have started in the first place.
If Trump wants to improve the economy to record levels he will fire Navarro and Lutnik.
What about the VAT tax?
djt destroying lefty narrative
IMO we should adopt our own VAT. Set it at 10%. Go to a flat rate on income tax of 10-15%. No exemptions, no refundable credits just a standard deduction of 15K. Same tax rate on capital gains so labor and capital are taxed equally (even though capital has already been taxed but it removes a big objection talking point from the commies).
End SSA/Medicare taxes; both programs go ‘on budget’ as pay go. That removes lots of room to spend $ we don’t have on other wasteful crap. End the Estate tax, grant a $3 million deduction on an inheritance and tax the rest as income. Keep the base 10% Tariff rate to create incentives to invest in US manufacturing as.well as a.revenue source. Abandon Federal Fuel taxes on cars/trucks to let the States pay their own transportation costs with their own taxes. No more Federal $ for roads, bridges, tunnels, buses, trains, subways or trolley cars.
Oh, and All that taken together will make pretty much everyone less than happy but without much legit complaints.
They were watching all the other countries have their Tariffs paused and suddenly at a global disadvantage of their own design.
Trump plays 4D chess.
This is a reaction to a pause Trump ordered that shocked the presidents staffers who learned last from the media.
This isn’t 4d chess this was Trump seeing the United States of America was about to enter a mega recession and returning to reality a place tariffs are bad for America in.
WSJ has great reporting on this.
Yeah that totally explains why EU blinked on their retaliatory tariffs.
He can flip them back on in a heartbeat. There’s no point in beating someone up economically while both are negotiation in good faith.
I appreciate opposing view points, but it seems your presence in the LI comment section is not for intellectual discussion, rather to spill your lefty piss bucket each time you comment.
I’ve come to the conclusion that Danny is not a lefty, but a genuine RINO.
Unlike the Juniors, who pee in the corners, Danny isn’t insane — just often not right.
As far as the EU goes, now we will negotiate.
It was willing to negotiate on the miniscule barriers before any of this happened.
Did they agree to remove import bans and restrictions on US agricultural products? How about direct/indirect subsidies? Nope they didn’t.
When they propose to have a consumer market as open to competition as the USA then they can come to the table and complain about the long overdue US response to decades of asymmetrical protectionist policies that have harmed US workers.
I still say withdraw some troops and planes from Europe. Give them something more to worry about. (Yes I still want to withdraw from NATO).
How many times does THE MORON have to change his story on tariffs before you redhat goobers figure it out? He . Is. A . MORON
but hey- I tollllllld ya?
C/P from above.

More mush from the expert negotiator who insists on the Hank Hill Deal at the car dealership.
