Campus Workers and Students Protest Funding Cuts at University of Tennessee

Do you think these same folks ever protested the cost of tuition or wasteful spending by the school? I’m guessing no.

University of Tennessee campus workers and students rally against funding cuts

Campus workers, students and community members held a rally at the University of Tennessee on Tuesday. Organizers said the goal is to raise awareness about the impacts of funding cuts and to put pressure on lawmakers to push back against them.

“We’re fighting for our students. We’re fighting for ourselves as workers, who our whole purpose is to help students learn,” said Anne Langendorfer, president of United Campus Workers Southeast. “One of the best ways that we can do this is to be together in the sunlight, in the daylight, to support each other and to support our students in coming here to get the education that they need.”

Since President Donald Trump took office in January, there have been sweeping federal cuts across several departments and programs, including the Department of Education. Grants and contracts from the federal government have amounted to close to half the total revenue of some research universities, according to an Associated Press analysis.

In March, Trump signed an executive order to dismantle the department as much as possible since it would take an act of Congress to completely shutter it.

“The reason that we’re here today is to encourage everyone to stand behind these institutions that form the backbone of what it means to be American, which is to really learn together to create a better world for each other,” added Langendorfer.
